Taking your Dd to public toilets

Thatsongoverandover · 12/08/2023 12:53

How do you do it as a family?

Dd is 5 and when with me, we go into the same cubicle together and both go to the loo if needed or just her. I never let her walk there on her own, even if I can see the toilets and so on.
What do/should dads do? It’s generally always me taking Dd for the last few years.

DH used to take the girls into the mens cubicle, or the disabled if free.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/08/2023 12:57

Under 8yo they go into the loos of the sex of the adult they are with.

8 and over they go alone into the toilet that matches their sex.

Stompythedinosaur · 12/08/2023 13:09

Young kids go in the toilet of the gender of the adult they are with - so a dd who's too young to go alone would go in with her df.

Minimochi · 12/08/2023 13:14

DS is 6 and while he sometimes still comes into the ladies with me, he generally prefers to go to the gents by himself.
It depends on where you are, doesn't it?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 12/08/2023 13:15

You just take her in the gents.

It was trickier when I had younger kids needing nappy changes and the only changing facilities were in the womens loo. Then, I would go in there to use the changing facilities.

Annaishere · 12/08/2023 13:17

When my son was about this age I took him into the Women’s but as he got a little bit older I just sent him into the Mens on his own and waited outside

TropicalTrama · 12/08/2023 13:17

My DD is 6 and this is how we’ve done it for a while now:
-Somewhere like a pub or restaurant where it’s not busy she goes on her own. She is happy to do this.
-Somewhere busier like a service station I go with her but I’ll go in my own cubicle whilst she’s in hers and we meet back at the sink.
-If she’s out with just DH she goes on her own and he’ll wait within view of the door. When she was younger he’d take her into the mens to use a stall (not like you can really see anything even if blokes are using the urinals) but haven’t done that since she was around 4 as she doesn’t want to.

I don’t think it’s that hard with girls tbh, it’s young boys you might not want going into the mens alone.

Yes I just worry about the men stood up weeing 🤷🏻‍♀️
Disabled is a good idea

Unless you or your DD have a disability, it’s not a good idea.

In what way is your child/husband disabled ffs. If they're not old enough to go by themselves, they go with the person who is looking after them. If it's a male, they go into the mens. It's not difficult.

I’m sure they’ll understand. Besides, your DH can just usher her past, it’s not like everything is out on display.

amylou8 · 12/08/2023 13:29

I'd took my boys into the female toilets until they were 8, although I appreciate it's easier as it's all cubicles. In your position I'd use the accessible toilet (you can buy radar keys on amazon) if there is one. Otherwise it's the mens unless she feels comfortable going in the women's on her own.

Please don't use the accessible toilets. They're for disabled people.

No the disabled isn’t a good idea 🙄

At 5 she really should manage the ladies on her own unless it’s somewhere really busy like a theme park. He can just wait outside the door and call out to her. But if you’re not comfortable with that for some reason then he has to take her into the mens. Urinals are pretty discreet- it’s like not a gym changing room where it’s all hanging out and he can just usher her past quickly. He could also trying planning days out around the loos, so if they’re out in town cafes often have mixed single cubicle type loos so he could plan for a cake and toilet break.

Shamelessly ableist.

bapplebanana · 12/08/2023 13:44

What's wrong with a child nipping into a disabled loo for a minute with their parent? I have a disability and if I had to wait for the loo I wouldn't be upset, nobody is every going to be very long?

TregunaMekoides · 12/08/2023 13:44

DH took the girls into the cubicle in the gents if needed. It was never first choice if I was there as the cubicles in the gents are usually grim. But I'm sure they will have seen men standing up weeing at some point. They seem to have both survived the ordeal 🤔

thaegumathteth · 12/08/2023 13:47

If your Dd saw men peeing at the urinal what would happen?

MXVIT · 12/08/2023 13:49

@thaegumathteth

She would burst into flame. Obviously.

Like that poor traumatised child on holiday in France on a previous thread

How soon does it happen because Dd is 12 and used to go into the men's with dh until she was about 6. I don't want scorch marks on the sofa.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 12/08/2023 13:50

DD is 8 and still comes in the cubicle with me unless it’s too small then we take turns.

with her dad she went in men’s cubicle or family or accessible until fairly recently. Now he sends her into the ladies by herself.

Thatsongoverandover · 12/08/2023 13:56

Oh ffs I’m just saying with a load of men stood there pissing, it’s not ideal, realise it’s not traumatic.
Have been noticing a fair few reports about not sending your Dd into the toilets alone as in a few cases, there was a man waiting inside. I know it’s v unlikely, but it happens. With Dd we both go in the cubicle, I realise as she gets older, she might prefer not to, so I’ll stand outside the actual toilet door, was just wondering what Dh could do
With the disabled toilets someone mentioned to use, it would be a very quick popping in, but I realise it isn’t ideal and they obviously would come out/wouldn’t use if someone needed to

Annaishere · 12/08/2023 13:56

I don’t think you should worry too much about her going into the women’s toilets on her own tbh

Annaishere · 12/08/2023 13:57

Oh I just read your update, that’s terrible
