If you get a good fish supper there is no grease. You need to come to the East Neuk of Fife for a proper fish supper.

@QuaversAndRedbull I have some sensory issues - I use the chip fork they have on the side.

I've never had actual sand in them! If you sit on the wall/rock/edge/seat why would you get Sand in them? I'm not putting them down on the ground.

There's always sand on the walls or on the benches near the beach where I go, maybe we're unlucky with the weather but there's always a breeze that carries sand, it's not that loads of sand ends up in my food but enough to cause a gritty feeling in my mouth sometimes. It's like light sprinkling salt but sand instead.

It can be something like someone nearby dusting themselves off after hopping off the bench or wall themselves at the same time a breeze is heading my way, but I'm sensitive to it because and takes away the enjoyment of the food because there's a little bit of sand on my chips.

Aww what a shame 😔. Chips by the sea is a real pleasure of mine. That and sunsets!

Totally use a plate we're not savages.

Totally agree

MrsImFedUpOfTheWeather · 11/08/2023 21:29

They've never tasted better than when out out newspaper in the olden days. Must have been the chemicals in the ink. Ashamed to admit I use a plate.

Sthenos · 11/08/2023 21:31

Definitely off plates. Usually a large fish & chips is enough for two people, so that way you can divide it up. The paper is greasy too! And how do you eat the fish with a knife and fork if it’s still in the paper? And you need the plate for the sauces (I like tartare or mayo for the fish, ketchup for the chips, mushy peas on the side).
I’m northern and DH is southern and we both eat it off plates at home.

SalviaDivinorum · 11/08/2023 21:36

Plates here and sat at the kitchen table.

YouAndMeAndThem · 11/08/2023 22:02

Pandaflop · 11/08/2023 20:07

Not fish and chips! At a push the chips but not anything else- the grease, presumably not cutting it so chewing chunks off it- nooooo.

Biting chunks off it surely! Like you'd bite chunks off of a bacon sandwich or a snickers...??

Butteredtoast55 · 11/08/2023 22:05

Plate all the way, but Mr Toast is a weirdo because he transfers them from the paper using a serving spoon and fork like he's doing silver service!

KajsaKavat · 11/08/2023 22:06

Plate.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 11/08/2023 22:07

The paper soaks up the grease, so YABU. Put it on the plate and you’ll know by measure how much you’ve eaten.

CurlewKate · 11/08/2023 22:14

All this talk of grease. You all need to find new chip shops!

JudgeJ · 11/08/2023 22:21

YouAndMeAndThem · 11/08/2023 18:12

I always have to crisp the chips up in the oven otherwise they're soggy so definitely on a plate !!!

Better in the air fryer and cheaper than the oven, works for any leftovers too next day.

MummyDummyNow · 11/08/2023 22:27

The paper is just the packaging for transporting it home. Then put onto warmed
plates and eaten with knives and forks. Really can't imagine eating it at home out of greasy paper. How do you cut it up to eat?

CherryMaDeara · 11/08/2023 22:33

YABU, love it on a plate.

DanglingMod · 11/08/2023 22:42

Definitely on (warmed) plates. Fish and chip portions are absolutely massive, so we share one between three and there are still too many chips. Cheapest takeaway!

LightSpeeds · 11/08/2023 22:44

I likes a plate too.

PutThatDownNow · 12/08/2023 12:02

toomuchlaundry · 11/08/2023 18:46

@PutThatDownNow we have a picnic rucksack which has an insulated section and a detachable wine bottle holder, together with plates, cutlery and plastic wine glasses. We have had civilised picnics whilst out hiking!

That sound lovely @toomuchlaundry. I wouldn't be phased by seeing a civilised picnic. It was the fish and chips that threw me off. But I guess takeaway fish and chips al fresco is a picnic? Maybe it was the organisation that really threw me.
