Always on a plate. I'm even confused by the people talking about eating on the beach. How does it work? Is there not grease and sand everywhere & how do you cut the fish while it's in the box?

Georgyporky · 11/08/2023 18:13

All on a plate - home or away.
Our local pub does good f&c; the chips are crisp, not like the limp willies from most chippies. What lets them down is putting them in a silly mini chip basket

OnionBhajis · 11/08/2023 18:16

Wow thirty if you've never had chips on the beach (quay/other water places) you really have missed out!!!

They have a little wooden chip fork but we usually just get chips.

You sit on a bench or a wall. Why do you need cutlery for fish and chips? Just tear it apart using your fingers.

TheGoogleMum · 11/08/2023 18:17

If sharing use plates, if in paper use plates. If not sharing and it's in a box use the box

??? You just tear bits of fish off to eat it at the beach, you don't cut it 😳 there's no grease anywhere except on the paper, and you just don't touch the sand while you're eating 😂 obviously not a regular beach goer!!!!

YouAndMeAndThem · 11/08/2023 18:20

@thirtythrillionthreetrees have you never had a picnic at the beach?

Totally use a plate we're not savages.

😂

Riapia · 11/08/2023 18:22

Why would anyone even think of eating fish and chips indoors?
They should be eaten out of the paper with the fingers.

Theyrethreetheyresixtheyreninetheyreeight · 11/08/2023 18:22

Always on a plate as we share out the large chips and put our fish/pie/burger or whatever on the plates. We also have curry sauce and that would end up with bits of dissolved paper in it.

What is it tonight? The is the second chippy thread I’ve read and now I want chips!

YouAndMeAndThem · 11/08/2023 18:23

Are people POURING the sauce on the chips?! Don't they go soggy? Oh no no no not where I'm from, it's a dip only 😂

PurpleSteak · 11/08/2023 18:24

One of the very best times of my life was after a lovely day out with a new man, ending with fish and chips on the beach (at Deal 😆) with the sun setting behind us.

It was at least a decade ago and it still makes me warm to think of it, even though the man is history!

Proudgypsy · 11/08/2023 18:27

We never eat it at home (because all the ones around here are crap) but on the rare occasions we do, it's on a plate.

Same as we decant any other takeaway onto a plate.

TregunaMekoides · 11/08/2023 18:28

Always a plate or the curry sauce goes everywhere.

Ooh sorry but I love to smother mine in chip shop curry sauce!

toomuchlaundry · 11/08/2023 18:29

Plate if at home

HughWalpole · 11/08/2023 18:30

On the beach us best, otherwise I’ll either put a plate under the paper or move everything onto the plate.

DH once brought home Big Mac and fries as a take away and we put it on a plate and honestly, it was a shock to see how massive it was- I thought I was going to be surprised by the smallness but quite the contrary.

Snapsnap1 · 11/08/2023 18:32

I'm with you OP, we're an eat straight out the box family! It's the ultimate no washing up meal!

ApolloandDaphne · 11/08/2023 18:32

I eat them from the tray/paper with fingers no matter where I am. They taste better that way.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 11/08/2023 18:32

Always on a plate here, unless it's pizza when it's eaten out of the box.

Aposterhasnoname · 11/08/2023 18:33

But the curry sauce will soak through the paper surely?

MrsKeats · 11/08/2023 18:33

Always on a plate.

Ladybug14 · 11/08/2023 18:33

Got to be on a plate. The tomato ketchup makes paper/cardboard soggy. So do the mini pickled onions Grin

FrostieBoabby · 11/08/2023 18:34

On a plate for me but out of the box for DH. I also use a knife and fork and DH uses his hands. We both think the other is weird.....

I also keep a knife, fork and pack of hand wipes in a sandwich bag in the car glove box in case we grab a chippy if we're out for the day.
