@chimamandafan “He's 58 and coming up to retirement with a much younger wife: I wondered if it's something to do with gaining residency by having a child born as a citizen of the country”

He’s 51 which is way off retirement and 38/51 isn’t that unusual an age gap at that age. And none of the grand tour of island nations they’ve stopped at stand out as particularly desirable passports.

I actually think the simplest explanation is usually right… no surrogacy, no trafficking, no drugs mules - just two selfish and stupid people who rely on the fact that ultimately they’ll get away with it. Which is true: they are not going to end up in the U.K. with their baby in an orphanage a ward of the St Lucian state.

Testina · 11/08/2023 22:27

@ellmau that would make him 53 now, not 51. Although newspapers are notorious for wrong ages. Why do you think that’s him? Are you one of the posters that has found his surnames?

Lessstressedhemum · 11/08/2023 22:28

Pair of complete, absolute fuds.

Testina · 11/08/2023 22:31

@ellmau - ah, I get you now - same address on 192 with the very distinctively named wife!

GreggingIt · 11/08/2023 22:42

Couple travel several thousand miles for a planned unassisted beach birth - yet apparently don’t have any film or photographic evidence of her pregnant/giving birth?

Guess they forgot it along with their common sense and sanity.

Hivaluegirl · 11/08/2023 22:05

The child will probably have a better life in st Lucia then the UK

Only if her parents can afford to live in one of the expensive tourist hotels. The majority of the population live in basic shacks, and a quarter of the population earn just under $7 per day.

Clymene · 11/08/2023 23:02

The whole thong is deeply suss. As is the fact that neither of them have any social media despite being in the sort of jobs where it's important for business

NumberTheory · 11/08/2023 23:05

meditrina · 11/08/2023 21:51

The article refers to the immigration office and the passport office in St Lucia.

And later to the High Commission in Grenada

Which suggests that the couple knew the difference between the terms High Commission and immigration/passport office, and that the St Lucian authorities did not issue a passport, even though jus solis applies, because place of birth (in St Lucian waters or not) could not be proved.

Why they waited until Grenada to approaching a High Commission isn't clear.

Unless of course the story was badly written up and one of the references to passport office or immigration office was intended to mean the High Commission consular section

I was assuming the passport office referred to was a British one (and wondered about the immigration).

I’m mainly appalled that government officials of whichever country could be dismissive of the nationality and parentage of a baby, though. As idiotic and selfish as the adults might be in this situation, there is a baby who authorities should be trying to ensure has their rights protected. To simply turn the parents away rather than get to the bottom of it seems like a huge safeguarding concern. I would hope that, should a foreign couple sail into Portsmouth and try and register a birth at sea, or get other official documentation they wouldn’t just be handwaved away because they don’t fit the criteria for whatever they’ve asked for.

tennissquare · 11/08/2023 23:10

I suspect people who know the couple will start selling their stories to the press over the weekend, I expect Clive has "history" hence the reluctance of the press to name his current "surname" incase its false or can link him to past news "stories".

Radiodread · 11/08/2023 23:14

@tennissquare id say you’re bang on.

they are very strangely absent from anything online - like, unfeasibly so. I’m a complete nobody but even I can find me within about 5 minutes of googling.

Testina · 11/08/2023 23:16

@NumberTheory “As idiotic and selfish as the adults might be in this situation, there is a baby who authorities should be trying to ensure has their rights protected. To simply turn the parents away rather than get to the bottom of it seems like a huge safeguarding concern.”

Are you reading a different article to me? Who is just turning them away?
They went to the hospital which was legally the wrong place, and were directed to the registration office (whatever the exact name is). Who helped them with the correct forms but faced an issue with proof. Where does it say that the St Lucia authorities turned them away? How do you know they didn’t also tell them a DNA test was needed - before these 2 idiots sailed off to Grenada?

You can’t go to a whole other country mid application and then claim the first country isn’t helping you!

Sounds like they’ve been supported by the HC perfectly well - but rightfully (to safeguard that baby as you’re concerned about) - that support includes telling them they need a DNA test to progress.

Don’t buy their nonsense story AT ALL about getting no help. I don’t doubt it’s been complicated and confusing - but they just fucked off to another country instead of following that through in the (probably) country of birth 😳

What's wrong with Skegness..... seriously though, what utter twats.

Skeggy is a bit windy round the old fandango I'll have you know and too many donkeys. Mind you with that in mind they would have fit in well.

Treaclespongepudding · 11/08/2023 23:19

If they wanted a beach, couldn’t they have done Bognor

LadyWhineglass · 11/08/2023 23:23

Bugger Bognor.

Dixiechickonhols · 11/08/2023 23:28

The Dad possibly going by a couple of surnames could also contribute to delay if couple haven’t got all documents necessary evidencing name changes eg if his name on marriage certificate is different to current passport.

Bet a penny to a piece of s*t they haven't got certificates with them.

I think this is them just after the now 8 year old was born: Man caused crash after driving wrong way on A451 - BBC News

It does sound like something Clive might do. He blamed a sign for his mistake.

there are millions of men out there whose only aim is to impregnate a woman at least 10 years younger than them. It it is their only purpose.

Fercullen · 12/08/2023 00:02

How do you know they are middle class? And what’s class got to do with it? My amazement at the class obsession in this country has just reached a whole new level! 🤣

The registration office, immigration office and passport offices on St Lucia turned them away according to the article. All of whom had an opportunity to ensure the baby wasn't being trafficked or allowed to be stateless by being proactive about ensuring the couple were following whatever robust process is necessary to verify parentage and citizenship.

I would not be at all surprised if there was far more to the story than was published which is why I was clear that my comments only applied if the article was a good representation of what happened.

pontipinemum · 12/08/2023 00:26

They are absolute idiots. They are so lucky that it has all turned out reasonably well and they are all alive

Fercullen · 12/08/2023 00:03

That was @RudsyFarmer

They’ve hired a yacht for multiple months, and apparently both have enough experience of crewing to sail it around the Caribbean. The article somebody linked earlier had him driving a BMW the wrong way down a dual carriageway. He’s a fell runner (very MC hobby). She’s a yoga teacher (very MC job, second only to Reiki healer).

Plus of course, the crazy entitlement that leads him to believe that other countries’ immigration rules shouldn’t apply to him or any of his family, which is very common to a particular type of posh, middle-aged middle-class Englishman.

It doesn’t particularly matter what class they are, but he at least is very clearly MC.
