DH winds my window up!

Forwardthinkinglobster · 11/08/2023 10:23

It’s the only bit of control I have in the passenger side of the car when I’m not driving; it’s MY window. He pushes my button as well as his, thus forcing me to relinquish control of said window. It gives me the absolute rage. Wind your own window up but don’t snatch mine!

AIBU?

(Anyone else’s DH do this?)

It's my choice as the driver (especially at higher speeds).

Things quite often blow/fly in through the windows and can get in your eyes, plus the noise and effect on the car.

Nope, driver controls windows and gets veto unless someone is travel sick and needs it open. I hate it when I close mine and someone else's is open and it goes "thump thump thump", it's infuriating.

All open or all closed and driver gets final say.

THIS. ^ Just one window being open in a car (when it's moving at speed, 20mph or more) is dreadful. It makes such a noise!

Also @Forwardthinkinglobster if the car has air conditioning - as many cars do - then YABVVVU for opening the window at ALL.

MargaretThursday · 11/08/2023 12:47

Ds gets into the car with coat, hat and gloves on and adjusts the heating which I have got just right as driver. Drives me crazy! Especially when I'm doing him a favour by picking him up.

tescocreditcard · 11/08/2023 12:48

Have some fun with it. Find something that he finds really annoying and do it to him all the time, whilst quietly chuckling to yourself. You'll enjoy it. I know I do.

Crowfinch · 11/08/2023 13:01

I do this. Anything over 30 and the window needs to be shut. It's worse if it's the passenger side.

Duchessofspace · 11/08/2023 13:02

TeenDivided · 11/08/2023 10:25

To some extent I think the person who is driving gets the control.
Plus if one window is open and the others shut just you get that awful juddering sound.

I would also find it annoying though.

This - he goes in the passenger seat and you drove. Driver rules all.

mrsbyers · 11/08/2023 13:03

Mine fiddles with all my controls , puts his radio station on and blasts cold air on my bare legs etc - I just turn it off again and tell him if he touches them again I’ll stop the car and let him out , seems to work

Greenpolkadot · 11/08/2023 13:11

Just wind it down again. DHknows I can think for myself regarding the window situation

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 11/08/2023 13:12

RoseBucket · 11/08/2023 12:19

Windows up when I’m driving past 30, it gives me helicopter ears, the sound of helicopter blades turning and is very irritating.

Me too. I always have the aircon on so windows are shut.

WunWun · 11/08/2023 13:13

It makes me fucking livid when people have the windows open when I'm driving. Especially if they then try to talk to me over the racket.

thecatsthecats · 11/08/2023 13:22

ScandiCushion · 11/08/2023 11:20

Shocked at all these messages saying driver has full control of all windows!

In my family we all control our own windows. Never dreamed it could be any other way!

If you're travelling in a car as a passenger and you need some fresh air, you open your window.

I'm a driver and would never dream of controlling others' windows!

But then this must mean that the drivers in your family aren't bothered by the windows being open.

Because if they were and it was distracting from the driving, that would override the rest, right? Which is the same as what everyone else is saying.

I once turned the music down to concentrate on a tricky nav direction. My (non driving) husband pouted and turned it back up.

I gave him both barrels. You NEVER interfere with what the driver wants.

CornishGem1975 · 11/08/2023 13:26

Driver's prerogative. One window open is awful and I prefer air con anyway, which is pointless when I window is being opened. So YABU.

BashfulClam · 11/08/2023 13:31

My mother used to insist on opening the window. I have hayfever and despite anti histamines etc it’s more comfortable for me driving with air con and the pollen filter doing its job. I’d have eyes streaming, trying not to sneeze and my hair all whipped onto my face. So I would put her window back up!

luckylavender · 11/08/2023 13:34

Driver always decides.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/08/2023 13:37

Do you drive, op?

wedonttalkaboutyouno · 11/08/2023 13:41

I’m also really surprised by these responses! I can’t remember ever being in anyone’s car where I wasn’t allowed to open my window, and I don’t police it in my car when I’m the driver. If DH or DC have their window open, I just open mine slightly to stop the juddering noise, and turn the heating up if I’m cold. Despite what people are saying about aerodynamics, I have never found it tricky to drive when windows are being opened and closed.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 11/08/2023 10:29

Sneakily turn his side of heating up or down depending on how you want him to feel . 😝

I do this because I’m childish. I put his heated seats on in hot weather 🤣

@bringbackthe80s my car still has wind up windows in the back- it’s relatively new (2017) I didn’t realise that until about 5 months after I brought the car as it was only ever my ds and I in the front!

NoodleQueen90 · 11/08/2023 13:54

Everyone moaning about the noise of windows being open, have you tried fitting wind deflectors? Apart from anything else they make most cars look better 😎 but you can also have the window open an inch or 2 for fresh air rain or shine and at motorway speeds with much less noise. I recommend Heko brand and usually buy them from eBay.

Enko · 11/08/2023 13:54

Rudolphthefrog · 11/08/2023 10:34

I find the noise and air movement from open car windows very annoying and distracting so if I’m driving then they’re all closed. Driver has power of veto I’m afraid, over windows, music, heating etc.

We have air conditioning so there’s no reason at all for them to be open anyway except briefly for taking a ticket at a barrier or paying a toll.

This 100% and for me if its the back windows I outright get ear pain.

Forwardthinkinglobster · 11/08/2023 13:57

I’m enjoying an excellent array of diverse replies - thank you! I get your points about window noise and driver trumping everything , but DH hates air con because it “dries his eyes out”(???), hence the windows being open. He has a higher tolerance to heat/humidity than I do, so he often winds the windows up and then I sit there sweating even though we have air con in the car?! Don’t get me wrong, he’s a lovely guy and we get on fine (usually!) but this car etiquette is bonkers and on long journeys we end up having a “button off”!

Iheartmysmart · 11/08/2023 14:02

Hmm well the law according to Supernatural is ‘driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole’ so perhaps that extends to windows as well.

TomatoSandwiches · 11/08/2023 14:03

Air con is worse than no windows open, so claustrophobic and false, I need to feel the air / movement or I up chuck, I don't know how you can stand it tbh.

Forwardthinkinglobster · 11/08/2023 14:03

For those that ask - yes I do drive!
