DH winds my window up!

Forwardthinkinglobster · 11/08/2023 10:23

It’s the only bit of control I have in the passenger side of the car when I’m not driving; it’s MY window. He pushes my button as well as his, thus forcing me to relinquish control of said window. It gives me the absolute rage. Wind your own window up but don’t snatch mine!

AIBU?

(Anyone else’s DH do this?)

When I'm driving, as soon as I hit a slip road, if any windows are open I shut all 4.

That's because my speed will be increasing rapidly so I don't expect my passengers to react quickly enough to prevent the wind being distracting when driving.

If I'm somewhere where speed is increased more gently, then I'd ask a passenger to shut their window rather than doing it for them. However, I have the ultimate decision on whether they can be open or not, as it's me who's responsible for driving safely, and that may mean avoiding having a gale blowing across my face (or the "wumpa, wumpa, wumpa" beat noise where a window needs to be either opened more or opened less)

Another one for the driver deciding what happens in the car.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/08/2023 14:14

If you drive, you should already appreciate how distracting the noise from an open window can be.

Everyone moaning about the noise of windows being open, have you tried fitting wind deflectors? Apart from anything else they make most cars look better 😎 but you can also have the window open an inch or 2 for fresh air rain or shine and at motorway speeds with much less noise. I recommend Heko brand and usually buy them from eBay.

Why the hell should I when I have working air conditioning and any passengers I carry are trained?

Though I am currently training my 4 year old DD into the rules - what the drivers says goes unless you are going to be travel sick.

NoodleQueen90 · 11/08/2023 14:38

@Reugny dial it down a notch 😂 I was actually trying to be helpful for people who like fresh air in the car but dislike the noise. I didn't say everyone must buy them!

Passengers must be trained to keep the driver happy while driving.

Very important in mini-buses and coaches.

In fact in coaches where you hire the driver(s) it is even more important. 😂

Sothisiit · 11/08/2023 14:44

Opening one window in a car travelling at speed can cause pressure imbalance which is very annoying and uncomfortable on the ears.
In our car the driver is in full control of the heating, windows and music unless otherwise designated.

Nothing could make my car look better 😂

longtompot · 11/08/2023 14:55

My dh does it too and it does annoy me a little bit. I just wind it back up again to where I want it to be.

@NoodleQueen90 I wondered if those helped with the booming noise and pressure you get if one window is open but none others are. I'll look into them for our car, thank you for the recommendation

NoodleQueen90 · 11/08/2023 15:02

@longtompot yeah I'm generally in the car alone and only open my drivers window an inch or 2 on the motorway but there's none of that horrible flappy noise with a wind deflector on. I briefly had a car with pillarless doors so wasn't able to fit them to it and I hated it...it was a choice between stuffy or noisy 😏 it was one of the main reasons I sold it quickly...that and I couldn't get the doors open when it froze in winter 😂

I was just wondering why everyone was being so dramatic about noise then I remembered we always have wind deflectors. I'm a window down kind of person, air con is rotten fake air.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 11/08/2023 15:12

My friend gets in and shuts her window so that her hair doesn't blow about. I wish I had the guts to say something sometimes I like all the windows open.

ActDottie · 11/08/2023 15:16

Depends on the context really if you’re about to join a motorway then fair enough. But I do think if you’re the driver you kinda get the say because the noise may make it hard to concentrate.

stitchinguru · 11/08/2023 15:19

That’s nothing - my controlling ex once leaned across me when I was driving to beep the horn at an old man who had pulled out in front of me….
Hence, he’s now an ‘ex’

TomatoSandwiches · 11/08/2023 14:03

Air con is worse than no windows open, so claustrophobic and false, I need to feel the air / movement or I up chuck, I don't know how you can stand it tbh.

I get travel sick and prefer to have windows open. My DP knows this so we just have a general rule that windows are open below 50mph and then shut above 50mph, when the aircon goes on. Under 50 and there's not much difference in energy use. Over 50mph and the alteration in aerodynamics from open windows makes aircon the more energy efficient choice. If we're doing that speed it will be on a fairly straight road where I'm less likely to get travel sick, so it works out.

50 is a general rule of thumb, it does vary between cars https://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/hybrid-technology/driving-with-windows-down.htm

Windows Down or A/C on — Which Is More Fuel-efficient?

Most of us have been told that driving with the air conditioner switched on uses a lot more fuel than rolling the windows down to cool off. But is that always true?

You just sound like a moron when you “disagree” with facts. Even a moderate speeds the air coming through open windows affects how the car drives. It’s not an opinion.

I can imagine you would class a moderate speed as 15mph. 😂
If you cannot drive with the window down then may I suggest you find alternative modes of transport.

KajsaKavat · 12/08/2023 09:06

I do what your husband does. My only exception is my middle son who likes his head out the window like a dog…

rockpoolingtogether · 12/08/2023 11:39

Harrypewter · 11/08/2023 11:14

Surely you can control your own window. Why should the driver have control over your comfort level.
The driver should be concerned with driving.

This! My DH won't let us (me and the children) have the air con on and it's 23° today so quite warm. We are driving 2hrs and we get sweaty and nauseous
