My son just called me mummy

He’s 5. He’s non verbal with Autism and has not shown any real inclination to talk.

This last 2/3 weeks he’s started ‘demanding’ food which is brilliant, but tiday he saw me and shouted ‘mummy!’.

I can’t believe it. I could cry ❤️

Awesome @Merryoldgoat . I know not everyone likes to share pics but could we have a pic of his cheeky face if you feel able?

ShazzyG71 · 15/12/2023 21:11

I would love to but he’s so distinctive looking and I’d rather not be outed.

Of course he is, he's got an amazing mummy. 👏

cantbecaught · 16/12/2023 07:57

I think this is my favourite thread ever. What a wonderful little boy. You sound like someone I wish I knew OP and so deserve all this joy. What a year for you and your little bean!

ntmdino · 16/12/2023 08:19

Bloody brilliant! Hopefully the start of a whole new chapter in your lives :)

It's surprising to many how often this happens - autistic kids without speech suddenly decide one day that it's time. I know some autistic folk with autistic kids who'd been silent until 5-9, and then out of the blue started a full conversation for absolutely no reason.

PicardsVictorianChild · 16/12/2023 10:12

So pleased for you OP as fellow mum of a 5yo with very little spoken language ♥️

It’s so surprising for us but it’s lovely how happy he is with himself as he learns and speaks more.

Our oldest boy is also autistic but was talking VERY early so we’ve felt very at-sea sometimes with the little one.

It’s so hard knowing there’s loads in there but not knowing the key to get it out.

Does he use signing or any other methods to communicate? My son has always been resolutely anti pecs/signing etc.

I love all the updates, OP, but I’ve still got tears in my eyes from reading your first post. This is a beautiful thread. Sending love and hugs to you all.

PicardsVictorianChild · 16/12/2023 10:58

@Merryoldgoat we do some signing to aid understanding but he rarely signs. He has real trouble copying motor actions from just watching which I think is quite common with asc kids? And pecs cards he thinks are fun to play with and litters around the house. We're trying proloquo2go on an iPad at the moment which he likes for demanding food 😁. The real turning point for me was finding out about the gestalt language processing research as he seems to be following that framework to the letter. That made me trust more that he'll get there in his own time if he possibly can.

Getting him the right support at school is an ongoing bloody nightmare however. Glad it sounds like you've found a good place for your son.

Merryoldgoat · 16/12/2023 11:08

@Ofcourseshecan thank you x

@PicardsVictorianChild as our older boy had a diagnosis we got our referral to the Paediatrician very quick - just at 2 and literally just before lockdowns. They did lots of the preliminary stuff online over video call so his diagnosis was in place by 3 which meant nursery could get SENDIAS funding quickly for his start. His EHCP was in place prior to Reception too.

And by sheer dumb luck our local primary where the nursery that he attended is attached has a specialist unit for Autistic Children so he as been in a specialist provision since Reception with really lovely staff.

Nothing is perfect but we have it SO much better than many.

Glad your son has a framework he’s responding to. The biggest thing I’ve learned is these kids absolutely cannot be rushed 🤣
