To think an autistic child should not be treated like this by the police?

I don’t know the background to this video, but at no point is there any suggestion by the police that this autistic teenager has done anything other than say words the police didn’t like.

I am absolutely shocked that this is happening in Britain.

IABU - that’s an appropriate police response to homophobic words
IANBU - those police officers should be sacked

Warning: the video shows scenes of an autistic teenager being hurt.

Just as neither of you can see the world through my eyes. Can’t be changed

It is certainly difficult to see the world through the eyes of someone who refuses to pay any attention to known facts about ASD.

I responded to one poster whose post made sense to me. The others were primarily hostile from the start. I explained that I have no interest in engaging further in the discussion because it seems irrelevant and it won’t change my opinion on the event.
In short: I can’t identity with either autistic people as described nor with the majorities of the posters on this thread, so there is no point in engaging me further.

Can you really not accept that the two categories of autistic people that you say you know may not be representative of the entire spectrum? Essentially you seem to be saying that you cannot acknowledge the possibility that your knowledge may be incomplete - which it certainly is. That is, to say the least, an unusual stance to take.

If a schizophrenic person does not engage in treatment and takes their mediation I consider them culpable and at fault for their condition. I don’t think this comparison fits here.
Her spinal condition would not have been an issue if she had complied with the police orders and not laid down on the ground. As there is no audio available for this part of the video (unless there are different versions) I cannot comment what was being said.
Other posters are correct that there is no point to engage me further on this topic. I am not changing my mind. I can accept that most people have a different opinion on the matter so there is no point debating.

So you DO think that people in wheelchairs should just start using their legs then, like you or I would?

Because that’s literally the comparison with an autistic person behaving like you or I would.

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 16:40

Sheog · 16/08/2023 09:20

Yes I am probably prejudiced because I am wondering how she is able to socialise with friends and drink if she reacts like this to confrontations. But I am getting bored discussing this now.

Maybe use your energy to actually Google autism rather than continue your ableism?

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 16:41

@Sheog do you think autistic people ALWAYS have meltdowns 24/7?

You not being able to understand doesn’t make it not the - it just makes YOU a bit dim TBH.

Where did I say that they have tantrums 24/7? You love twisting words, don’t you?
Someone explained earlier that they can react differently depending on the situation/ surroundings. I said it was interesting but it doesn’t change the fact that I cannot comprehend this feeling myself.

Because you’re puzzled as to how an autistic person who reacts this way can also socialise and have friends. So how did you think autistic people behave around their friends?

As explained the only ones I know don’t differ from others (to me), and I only know about their autism because they talked about it. The second category is nonverbal and unable to interact unless accompanied by a guardian.

Well autism is a spectrum - you only know people on opposite ends of that spectrum. This video shows a girl somewhere in the middle. It’s really not that hard to understand.

Anyway. No point trying to repeat the same stuff over and over since I can’t possibly understand it. You can ignore me now

Ah you poor thing. Must be so hard to be irritated by disabled people.

You don’t have to understand it (although again it’s REALLY not hard to understand) but you do have to accept that that sudden and intense meltdowns triggered by distressing event is a symptom of autism.

People in wheelchairs irritate me. Is that ok to say do you think?

CoffeeWithCheese · 16/08/2023 17:05

No point repeating it...

Please, stop then.

It's a fucking disability. Who cares if it irritates you?

It doesn’t bother me when you say it because it has nothing to do with me.

So it's fine to say disgusting offensive things, as long as its not about you.

CallumDansTransitVan · 16/08/2023 17:55

The biggest question for me in all this, is how the Police are using their limited resources. Even without the autiism in the girl. Is it proportionate for a number of officers to rock up at the girls home & carry out a heavy handed arrest, just because she called one officer a lesbian.

To my mind, one officer going to speak to the parent should of been enough & either giving the girl a ticking off or the mother giving her a ticking off.

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 17:58

The crime rate in West Yorks is 172% higher than the national average.

And this is how they use their time.

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 16/08/2023 19:34

Depends what they record as crime, doesn't it. Such as a teenager's comment to her mother in their own home...

My feeling based on what we saw in the video it really was a non issue and certainly not a crime. But even if it had been a gobby teenager in the street with no health issues, Did it really warrant the response it got from the Police.

I'd imagine most of us would say their time could of been better spent elsewhere.

I explained that I have no interest in engaging further in the discussion...
