To think an autistic child should not be treated like this by the police?

I don’t know the background to this video, but at no point is there any suggestion by the police that this autistic teenager has done anything other than say words the police didn’t like.

I am absolutely shocked that this is happening in Britain.

IABU - that’s an appropriate police response to homophobic words
IANBU - those police officers should be sacked

Warning: the video shows scenes of an autistic teenager being hurt.

Don’t lecture me on masking because I am better at it than any of you are.

What I cannot comprehend is the emotional instability and emotional reliance that seems to come with it for some people (autism or not). That’s what I look down on. Not gender, race, diagnosis, age or condition.

Thats why this video is so incredibly annoying.

Genuine LOL at...well, all of that.

And the stereotype is that autistic people lack empathy...just, wow.

Ohthatsabitshit · 13/08/2023 23:10

Reading your posts I would suggest you’re not looking down. To look down you have to be above, and frankly you sound more like someone who “puts down”.

Boomboom22 · 13/08/2023 23:18

I can see how I, a neurotypical nearly 40 Yr old would be terrified if 7 police officers entered my home for a comment that wasn't intended as offensive, so I can't see how you can say that after seeing her reactions of hitting herself.

Boomboom22 · 13/08/2023 23:19

And I'm a teacher, not easily intimidated and often called bolshy.

Ohthatsabitshit · 13/08/2023 23:57

Laughing at a distressed person is vile

Green777 · 14/08/2023 07:29

Ahhh Sheog is a man. Now it makes sense.

Green777 · 14/08/2023 07:31

A man who loves to play ‘devils advocate’ and be the only logical voice to dig and question a very very straightforward case.

You think a disabled person having a crisis is funny?

Do you laugh at people in wheelchairs being in excruciating pain?

WeetabixTowels · 14/08/2023 09:57

Sheog · 13/08/2023 22:33

I genuinely cannot understand how or why this would have been a traumatising experience (particularly for someone who is able to socialise outside of the family home), so obviously I find it amusing how everyone is freaking out about such a non event.

On the gender nonsense going on here:
I never even brought gender into the discussion until someone called me a bitch and I felt it was fit to clarify before someone calls me deceptive down the lines.

So you admit you don’t understand how autism and meltdowns affect autistic people - but think you’re the authority on it as well?

I take it you look down on disabled people because they are unable to use their legs then?

WeetabixTowels · 14/08/2023 09:58

*people in wheelchairs, no disabled people

ShinyYellowTeapot · 14/08/2023 10:00

I see that my comment challenging misogynist ableism was deleted, but the misogynist ableism is allowed to be repeated and doubled-down on. Okay then. Cheers, MNHQ.

No. I just don’t understand why people can’t handle their emotions more effectively. There had been no need for that situation to escalate to such a degree but you had unnecessarily shouting and screaming which made everything worse.

I never claimed to have that type of empathy

Do you fail to understand why people in wheelchairs can’t just use their legs more efficiently?

But I agree the unnecessary shouting and screaming from the professionals towards the disabled child did make things worse

People in wheelchairs have nothing to do with this situation

Sheog · 14/08/2023 10:46

People in wheelchairs have nothing to do with this situation

Well actually they do.

You genuinely believe disabled people should just not have symptoms of their disability, and that there’s no reason to display these symptoms

Why doesn’t this belief extend to people in wheelchairs? Why can’t they just use their legs?

WeetabixTowels · 14/08/2023 10:54

But it’s VERY telling that you say people in wheelchairs have nothing to do with this - it shows you think the only genuine disabilities are obvious visible ones. Which means either you’re ableist or not very bright, or both.

Absolutely, and the police go through thorough training on how to handle their emotions, effectively unlike your average 16-year-old ND or not.

Yes the policewoman was certainly acting unreasonably if there had been nothing else leading up to the situation.

Agree with you. I've been here years and that was my first ever deletion. Very bizarre. But, you're right, engaging with that poster is fruitless.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 14/08/2023 12:50

All the silly women on this thread being all emotional. Thank heavens we've finally got a sensible man to show us the error of our ways. <eye roll>
