To think an autistic child should not be treated like this by the police?

Immoralplant · 10/08/2023 08:10

I don’t know the background to this video, but at no point is there any suggestion by the police that this autistic teenager has done anything other than say words the police didn’t like.

I am absolutely shocked that this is happening in Britain.

IABU - that’s an appropriate police response to homophobic words
IANBU - those police officers should be sacked

Warning: the video shows scenes of an autistic teenager being hurt.

Re the amount of officers - you are coming from a (fair) assumption that the police always act reasonably. They don’t. The other day in London FOUR officers attended to (wrongfully) arrest a woman who they thought evaded a £1.75 bus fare. We do know the female officer called for back up - when this happens police just descend because they trust their colleagues have made a fair request, they don’t ask question because so often there isn’t time and they ARE needed ie when someone is being violent

In my view, this is why in situations like this, a more senior officer should be able to use common sense and overrule am aggressive bully with an attitude problem. In the US you can request a supervisor in a stop or arrest who comes down and decides whether to continue with the original officer or to step in and cease the arrest or ticket.

Obviously it doesn't work in all scenarios, but I do think you should be able to request it here. It's only after the fact that an officer is involved that you can ask them to be stood down. It's what we did with the officer in my DHs case. We had to request it to a duty officer at the station, he made notes, took it upstairs to a senior officer and he then called and let us know he had reassigned the case to someone else. We had a week and a half of hell before that point though.

In times when so few trust the police due to some high profile cases, this would potentially go some way to help. A senior officer potentially would have seen the WPC had grossly overstepped her position of wrongful entry and arrest and could have diffused the situation before a child was locked up for 20 hours. It could have meant a restoration of faith in WYP as a whole and the rogue officer could have been seen as exactly that and disciplined afterwards.

@Sheog

I totally agree that the reason for the arrest seems ludicrous which is why I would like to know why so many police officers were at the property in the first place.

They were returning her home after her family reported her as being in the town centre intoxicated.

What happened before the recording started and why is the sound edited out towards the end?

The above posted has answered this.

Surely the girl’s screams would have ensured a lot more sympathy from viewers.

There’s a bit of discussion upthread about how sadly disabilities unless they’re obvious or inspirational to the opposite of eliciting sympathy. It’s a good discussion I recommend you have a look!

I’m not trying to be difficult here but I am very cynical about the way social media is used to promote events in the most dramatic fashion too cause outrage. In this case I have quite a few questions.

What questions? Most have been clarified

No, I do not take an edited video at face value. And I mentioned before that I have had my fair share of arrests. Insulting a police officer is probably the dumbest thing you can do when you already have their attention.

True but she didn't insult her. She made an observation. She didn't use a slur.

CuratedAndRated · 13/08/2023 11:09

It’s just totally ridiculous to suggest being called a lesbian is a reason to barge into someone’s house and drag them out, and arrest them.

Surely nobody's on board that there is now a sacred caste allowed to "Kidnap and assault" - using the FairCop language here - disabled children!

Ohthatsabitshit · 13/08/2023 11:09

She may not have intended to insult her. (Personally looking like a Nan or a Lesbian doesn’t register as hurtful to me but I guess if you’re upset by either of those you can be). Regardless it’s not a crime.

What is a crime now a days?

It seems burglary isn't something worth investing, why go 7 officers deep after a strong man when you can be a bottom feeder dragging around a girl with a spinal condition?

Why?

nauticant · 13/08/2023 12:11

It's an acknowledgement that the Police can sometimes act maliciously if they felt slighted by someone. Normally they get away with it but this case is looking like it could be an exception.

This is why I will always now advocate, we all have camera phones, use them. Whether it's you at risk, a loved one, or someone on the street, film it. Log it. They cannot lie about what's on video. It's why I wish I'd filmed the vile aggressive pig of an officer who didn't like that I knew mine and DHs rights and this called me names and said he would come back, kick the door off and nick me later.
Because despite the money spent on body worn cameras, the amount of times they are miraculously not switched on or malfunctioning is staggering.

It's unpalatable to realise that those in one of the highest position of trust are happy to bend or even ignore the rules they are meant to uphold. But sadly, we all know they do, we aren't oblivious anymore because of camera phones.

Days later from this incident, an elderly man with MH issues walked out of a shop with a £1 can of beer. 4 large officers turned up, he was clearly unaware of where he was let alone what he had done, so they tasered him, and when that wasn't enough for one of the thugs, he was kicked hard in the back by someone twice his size, and smashed his head on the pavement, blood pouring from his forehead and nose. According to that force, this was an acceptable use of force.

Even with a camera they don't care. We must hold them accountable.

I think that the NHS has failed people.

Care in the community and the gender recognition act / Annexe B, its all evil.

They can't diagnose or treat people and are pushing the problem onto those without the expertise and any morals / empathy.

The police should be getting NHS staff who are inducing illness into prison, you see it with trans too, fabricated induced illness is a criminal offence.

The only thing the video showed was the mother aggravating matters and shouting. I hope this gets looked into properly and I think it’s a pity that an edited video went viral...

Oh, hello PC Lesbian Nan, I hope your colleagues aren't taking the piss too mercilessly.

It's how people with that disability handle stressful situations.

You sound abilest.

How has this police overreach become the fault of the NHS?

The problems of care in the community and the GRA were caused by the government. Annex B is the fault of the NHS but though I loath annex B I've no idea how it's to blame for the police illegally arresting a child.

Are you saying the NHS are inducing autism??

Ah, well done. Taking the piss out of someone having an autistic meltdown while being bullied by police.

Doing yourself proud, there.

There is nothing wrong with the concept of care in the community - but to do it well costs money, and mental health services are under resourced, something which is not completely the NHS fault.

I'm very much against gender ideology, but you're derailing the thread. No one involved in the incident is trans Confused

How often do I have to point out that I am male? But you know what? Feel free to continue calling me a bitch if you want to.
