Practical or pretentious?

AIBU to secretly hanker after a dressing room?

I don't much like getting dressed or undressed with my partner in the bedroom, so I would love to have a dressing room where I can disrobe in dignity. (I'm clumsy and rushing, and end up tangled in my knickers and lurching across the room).

What about a boot room, for chucking dirty footwear in and hosing down the dog?
A wine cellar?
A home gym?
A wine cellar?

Do you secretly hanker after any of these, or others? Are these things genuinely useful or merely pretentious status symbols?

Well this is odd.

LuvMyBoyz · 09/08/2023 19:42

My sister incorporated a boot room into her extension 23 years ago and I would absolutely love one!

lljkk · 09/08/2023 19:43

I'd much rather have a large walk in wardrobe than an en suite.

Louloulouenna · 09/08/2023 19:44

Couldn’t live without a boot room, ours is one of the biggest rooms we have - love it!

AgnestaVipers · 09/08/2023 19:45

Do people with boot rooms always have dogs? We're cat people, but I think I could still enjoy a boot room.

I would love a dressing room, no clothes clutter in the bedroom. But I would so sell my soul for a craft room.

YallaYallaaa · 09/08/2023 19:46

YES to a dressing room.

Also a proper pantry.

Forgoodnesssakewhatnow · 09/08/2023 19:47

I have a dressing room and a home gym.

I don’t know why but I bring the clothes through to the bedroom and get dressed in there 🤪.

The gym is a real treat because I have a baby, but I admit I use it in fits and starts.

discardedBox · 09/08/2023 19:48

A dressing room, a boot room and a pantry would be total bliss!

I used to have a craft room in my old house. It was truly serene and lovely. Then I had kids….

GrumpyOldCrone · 09/08/2023 19:49

I like that you have wine cellar twice 😁

I don’t mind getting un/dressed in front of my partner, but I’d still like a dressing room. More space for all my clothes would be very welcome. And a boot room, and a home gym, and a library, and a music room. I think that’s all (for now).

Magneta · 09/08/2023 19:52

Home gym for me. Not that I've use it, most probably.

I'd settle for a nice big hallway instead of a bootroom.

Nevermind31 · 09/08/2023 19:52

i would like a walk in wardrobe, a utility room, storage room, boot room (could be combined with utility room), pantry.

Stylesformiles · 09/08/2023 19:53

After taking some advice from other mums betters via the AIBU board I’m going to have my own room soon, so it’s a bit like having my own dressing room.

Stylesformiles · 09/08/2023 19:53

Or mumsnetters even

Bellyblueboy · 09/08/2023 19:56

There was a dressing room in my house when I bought it. I initially thought it was a waste of a (albeit small) bedroom but I love it.

the storage is amazing - four large wardrobes. Cupboards for shoes and make up and bags. I am naturally disorganised and having this space has been a life changer.

I have a largish utility room which doubles for a mud room. it keeps the mess out of the main house. I do t have a dog but regularly walks my parents dog and it is really handy for the muddy coats and boots and dozens of tennis balls!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/08/2023 19:58

We have a music room and a library. Is that pretentious enough? 🤣

AgnestaVipers · 09/08/2023 19:59

@Bellyblueboy , I'm picturing you as Mrs Maisel right now.😀

It's good to know there are people who share my longings for a more orderly life...

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats , yes, that's marvellously pretentious and I do hope you hold wonderful soirees on the regular.

I have my own dressing room and I bloody love it - so much more than I even anticipated.

I would also love a boot room, but not really any scope for that in our current house (we have a utility but creating external access would eat up too much space).

BaublesAndGlitter · 09/08/2023 20:02

My best friend has an amazing pantry and I'd 100% copy it if I could. You can stand in it and it has so much storage space.

I'd also love a boot room and a craft room.
Couldn't care less about a dressing room tbh and an en-suite makes me feel a bit 🤢

PandaPacer · 09/08/2023 20:02

I have a wine cellar! It's bloody marvellous. I love going down there to sit on the stool and hang out with my wines while I choose one for dinner or to take to a friend's.

Definitely pretentious, but practical too as I have wines slowly aging under my house that I would never be able to afford if I bought them with some age on them.

Mushroo · 09/08/2023 20:03

I have a dressing room (we’re not that fancy, it’s a new build flat!) but it’s amazing. I honestly wouldn’t move somewhere without the option to turn a small bedroom into one.

The bedroom is completely clutter free, and it’s nice being able to get dressed and shut the door so you don’t disturb the other person. Also means we have loads of wardrobe space.

AgnestaVipers · 09/08/2023 20:03

I'd settle for an en suite, but ideally would like a whole separate wing.

PeloMom · 09/08/2023 20:03

We have all those (a walk in closet though, not a dressing room) and also a walk in pantry. I can live without all except the home gym- that’s a must for me.
