Practical or pretentious?

AIBU to secretly hanker after a dressing room?

I don't much like getting dressed or undressed with my partner in the bedroom, so I would love to have a dressing room where I can disrobe in dignity. (I'm clumsy and rushing, and end up tangled in my knickers and lurching across the room).

What about a boot room, for chucking dirty footwear in and hosing down the dog?
A wine cellar?
A home gym?
A wine cellar?

Do you secretly hanker after any of these, or others? Are these things genuinely useful or merely pretentious status symbols?

Is love a library and a swimming pool (on the understanding all associated costs and maintenence come with it!)

slithytoveisascientist · 09/08/2023 22:31

His and hers en-suite dressing rooms
Laundry room
Pantry
Library
Boot room
Proper den / playroom

AffIt · 09/08/2023 22:32

In order:

  • A library (ideally with tall shelves and a ladder on wheels - I have dreamed of this since I was but a wee thing)
  • A massive walk-in pantry with enough space to display my out-of-control spice collection and a marble shelf for cheese
  • A boot room with decent seats / benches to allow you to sit down
  • A dressing room with really good lighting and a massive full-length mirror
  • A home gym would be nice, but I'd sacrifice it for the other four
DappledThings · 09/08/2023 22:38

This house had a massive dressing room when we bought it. Turned the dressing room into a bathroom, I had no interest in the former.

But I do have a library which is my luxury.

Toucanfusingforme · 09/08/2023 22:40

I have a craft room (teeny weeny bedroom) and I love it. All my craft clutter in one place to be picked up and put down as needed and doesn’t have to be cleared away. But I would also love a library.

I get you! Just to get dressed in peace!

Thepollonator · 09/08/2023 23:47

I have a craft room and it's my absolute sanctuary, my happy place, it's actually quite a big bedroom so it fits all of my paper craft stuff in as well as two knitting machines!
My husband has the sun room as his music room so we both have a nice place to chill.
I always feel a bit of a show off when I mention the rooms we have but we have waited a long long time to get it.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 09/08/2023 23:55

Is a boot room the same as a mud room? Small room just inside an outside door where you take off all your muddy and wet outer clothes?

We have a screened porch that serves that purpose.

I agree on the dressing room. I have an office/guest room/dressing room and it’s great. Nothing kills the mood of a special evening out than seeing your partner wrestle with shape wear!

dramoy · 10/08/2023 00:14

everyone I know with a home gym barely uses it.

walk in wardrobes are great for storage but I never got dresses if in there.

Can you have a boot room if you don't wear boots or walk much?

Well this is odd.

No it isn't. Not all of us are exhibitionists and some of us have very small bedrooms

Getting dressed and undressed in front of your partner is not being an exhibitionist Confused

For you to see it in that way is very odd. If you’re not comfortable doing that then you’re probably with the wrong person because that attitude isn’t healthy.

hattie43 · 10/08/2023 05:19

Definitely a boot room with a dog shower .

Is it? Because I thought "oh yeah, same here" as soon as I read the OP.

It's not the nudity, I don't mind him seeing naked. I just like peace and privacy for the undignified bits of strapping myself into a bra, scooping around inside arranging my boobs properly, pulling on tights or socks, trying on various outfits till I find one I'm happy with.

I'd bloody love a walk-in wardrobe/dressing room OP. And a boot room - having somewhere to hose off the muddy dog (and frequently muddy me) after a winter's walk would be brilliant. And a utility room. And my own bathroom that I don't have to share with anyone...

Ah well, a girl can dream!

Clarinet1 · 10/08/2023 06:56

I live in a fairly small one bedroom flat but if I could have another decent-sized room (say 14’ x 10’) it would be library cum music room cum office cum spare room!

McQueensMuse · 10/08/2023 07:03

Oh I would love a boot room. With a dog washing/grooming station in it.

If I won euro millions, I would design and build a house and an entire floor would be just for me and my partner.
It would go like this... Main bedroom with a bathroom either side which lead into dressing rooms then into walk in wardrobes. Heaven.

I want an orangery

Now you're talking!

@NannyGythaOgg , talk about living the dream!

AgnestaVipers · 10/08/2023 08:51

@Teenangels , we have a snug, too, but not space for a drinks cabinet. That is a great idea and one I will put on my wish list. 😀

We have all of these things, well the home gym just houses our Peloton but we both use it almost daily. And the wine cellar has more random oddities in it than wine.

They all came with the house. We live out of the village a bit so it's nice to have creature comforts without having to leave.

I do like the dressing room. When we lived in London we had to keep off season clothes in the loft and do a change around. It's more for the storage space than an aversion to changing in the bedroom.

GorillaInBikini · 10/08/2023 08:57

Oh gosh I too would love an orangery!

purser25 · 10/08/2023 09:00

Well I would like a craft room library utility room walk in wardrobe but no chance

Why? I don’t particularly enjoy applying deodorant, putting in a panty liner, etc. with my husband in the room.

we both give each other a bit of space in the mornings. You need to retain some mystery even when you’re old like us 😁

Voodoochile · 10/08/2023 09:02

I’ve been nosing around on Rightmove and came across a house where the master bedroom had 2 en suites, on one either side AND a separate dressing room. It was a barn conversion so this was all up a separate set of stairs at the opposite end to the rest of the bedrooms. And it had a massive utility/boot room.

And I couldn’t afford it, even if I sold a kidney.

AgnestaVipers · 10/08/2023 09:04

We also have a key safe where all keys and spares are kept, all clearly labelled with their own hooks.

This is next-level stuff. I must raise my game.

I have also realised that, given we are a family of bookworms, a library should also be on my list.

Thank you all for normalising my dreams. 😊

AffIt · 10/08/2023 10:24

In addition to my previously-dream rooms, I didn't know I wanted an orangery until I read this thread, but now I want an orangery.

MsRinky · 10/08/2023 11:07

We bought this house partly because of the walk-in pantry and the small utility: just enought space for the washer, a small chest freezer and a Sheila-Maid airer above it. Downstairs is mostly open-plan, so not having the washing machine droning away in the living area was crucial.

I would say a library, but my husband would say that the whole sodding house is already a library.. I have a bit of a book problem. I have a mezzanine office that has my WFH desk, more books, a studio couch and a yoga mat and it is lovely.
