To peel mushrooms

Based on much mushroom based discussion on another thread do you peel mushrooms?

YABU- mushrooms should NOT be peeled
YANBU- mushrooms should be peeled

Occasionally

Choufleuretbattenberg · 09/08/2023 00:37

Never. My mum insisted upon it.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/08/2023 00:38

Usually no. But they’re usually being cooked to death in an Instantpot stew or soup so the skin isn’t noticeable.

I vaguely recall my mum saying once that unpeeled mushrooms were a botulism risk, but frankly I’m prepared to live dangerously on this one.

SkipHopJumpSplatWallop · 09/08/2023 00:39

I peel them, but DH thinks they should just be washed.

cocoloco117 · 09/08/2023 00:44

There’s no need to peel mushrooms, but do whatever you like

Bananasplitlady · 09/08/2023 00:46

Always. Peeling and chopping stuff is my favourite kitchen job.

whatthebejesus · 09/08/2023 00:53

Never! My mum always does though and is horrified that I don't 🤣

XenoBitch · 09/08/2023 00:54

I have never peeled them. I don't even wash them. I read that they should be wiped, and not washed anyway.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/08/2023 00:59

Not usually but I peel the large field mushrooms. It's something I've always been taught to do when working in restaurants.

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2023 01:05

I always peel mushrooms. They go soggy if you wash them. I even have a little knife that's only used for peeling mushrooms. My mum always did it, so I suppose that's why I do.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 09/08/2023 01:05

Life is too short. If there’s actual clumps of mud on them, I’ll dislodge with a knife…….

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 09/08/2023 01:24

Well you're neither R or U, personal choice.

I don't even wash'em. Like a pp, just nudge any clumps of mud off with a knife.

I'm 46 and still here 🍄

Hivaluegirl · 09/08/2023 01:24

I do sometime

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/08/2023 01:29

Wiped and broken not chopped or sliced.

GrumpyPanda · 09/08/2023 01:40

Surely the canonical method is a brush and/or paper towels.

sixthvestibule · 09/08/2023 01:41

No, I just wipe them with kitchen towel.

Tarkan · 09/08/2023 01:41

I have a mushroom brush to gently wipe dirt off. I don't wash as they go slimy. If they're getting a little past their best then I'll peel them then as it's usually just the outside that's bruising and the inside is mostly fine.

FictionalCharacter · 09/08/2023 01:41

They don't have peel or skin. The layer you take off the top isn't a skin.
I don't wash them either, just brush off any little bits of compost. They're grown indoors in sterilised medium, so there's nothing unhealthy that needs to be washed off.

Floralnomad · 09/08/2023 01:50

I always peel them

eachtigertires · 09/08/2023 01:54

Until this thread I never noticed that mushrooms had skin and I eat them at least 5 days per week.

CrazyFrogDingDing · 09/08/2023 01:56

I peel them and I throw the stalks away too.

wheresmymojo · 09/08/2023 02:03

Nope. Never peel them (and they don't have peel...you're just pulling off the top of the mushroom, it isn't peel?)

PuffyShirt · 09/08/2023 02:08

My mum used to peel and de-stalk mushrooms.

No idea why. Monumental waste of time. And mushroom.

Netaporter · 09/08/2023 02:31

I’d never considered peeling mushrooms until I watched the latest series of ‘The Bear’ and Olivia Colman’s character was peeling a big pile of them. I have thought about this quite a bit in the past week which I think means I now identify as an old bag.

Peeled/shelled broad beans however are an absolute revelation. And dare I say, a taste sensation. Had my mother presented me with those as a child instead of the grey-greenish pile of beans which were tougher than welly boots I might have eaten more of them.

Louloulouenna · 09/08/2023 05:20

I’m confused, they don’t have skin so what is there to peel?
