Based on much mushroom based discussion on another thread do you peel mushrooms?

YABU- mushrooms should NOT be peeled

We always peel mushrooms Unless they are tiny baby ones .
I'm still scared from a field mushroom that I was cutting up as a teenager that was FULL of maggots!
It was the most revolting thing ever and I've peeled and inspected EVERY mushroom I've cooked since - I'm now 50 !!!

SkipHopJumpSplatWallop · 09/08/2023 00:39

I peel them, but DH thinks they should just be washed.

They should never be washed, they absorb water and go soggy. If you don't peel them, wipe with kitchen roll.

bringmorewashing · 09/08/2023 15:41

How would you peel a mushroom? And why? Are you eating them raw? I was taught when I worked in a restaurant to wipe any dirt off them with a damp cloth...

stargirl1701 · 09/08/2023 15:44

No. Just brushed with a mushroom brush.

FoodFann · 09/08/2023 15:45

I peel them to get rid of the soil

Moonberri · 09/08/2023 15:50

But you can just wipe off any soil, you don't need to waste the actual mushroom. They don't have skins.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 09/08/2023 15:54

Nope, don't wash them either, just brush any visible dirt off

Blackberriesbob · 09/08/2023 15:56

There's no skin to peel. To me it makes as much sense as peeling strawberries.

Samcro · 09/08/2023 15:57

i peel the big ones. but not button mushrooms, just wash them

SirenSays · 09/08/2023 16:02

Yep I peel them, it's satisfying and I found an earwig looking monster on one once. My husband is the only one who eats them and he doesn't bother with peeling

TerrifiedandWorried · 09/08/2023 16:16

No to closed cup but yes to larger field mushrooms usually because I've left them in the fridge for so long they have gone slimy

Wednesdaysotherchild · 09/08/2023 16:25

I always peel!

fridaynight1 · 09/08/2023 16:31

How do you even peel a mushroom?

off to YouTube]

OlderandwiserMaybe · 09/08/2023 16:31

Tarkan · 09/08/2023 01:41

I have a mushroom brush to gently wipe dirt off. I don't wash as they go slimy. If they're getting a little past their best then I'll peel them then as it's usually just the outside that's bruising and the inside is mostly fine.

wait..... hang on a minute. Theres actually a "mushroom brush" as in you can buy a brush with that specific purpose??

I've been around half a century and still things surprize me [laugh]

My Mum always used to peel mushrooms but I never bother.

Mushrooms grow in a sterile medium (manure) and I presume there are nutrients in the skin eg Vit D

fridaynight1 · 09/08/2023 16:32

Well that worked well. I've just found out how to do blue links.

I mean to say 'scuttles' off to YouTube

DappledThings · 09/08/2023 16:36

Nope, it's such a waste of both time and part of the mushroom.

I don't wash them either unless there's obvious chunks of mud on them

Justcashnosweets · 09/08/2023 16:37

I didn't even know peeling Mushrooms was a thing! I don't even wash mine, just remove any dirt before cooking. 🤷‍♀️

natura · 09/08/2023 16:40

I don't really understand why people would peel any vegetable or fruit other than oranges and bananas, so I'm the wrong person to ask...

daffodilandtulip · 09/08/2023 16:46

I can't eat them. They make me too nervous. Rightly so, it now appears...

Crunchymum · 09/08/2023 16:53

I love, love, love to peel mushrooms.

I just don't like mushrooms 😕

Crunchymum · 09/08/2023 16:54

Meant to say

I just don't like mushrooms to eat 😕

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 09/08/2023 16:55

I don't think I've ever peeled a mushroom. I do break the stalks off before cooking though.

SloraceHughorn · 09/08/2023 16:56

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 09/08/2023 13:26

Have always peeled and cut the end off the stalk. But I was raised on mushrooms that were growing in horse manure compost, or friend's fields.

OP, can you link to that thread please?

I'm not sure peeling would have made any difference here 😢
