Why peel them?

IHateLegDay · 09/08/2023 17:02

Wiped and sliced. Never peeled or washed

Why peel them?

I've always done it to completely remove the soil, not realising until yesterday they're grown in sterile soil.

Didn't wash them because I thought it made them go slimy 🙃

I don't think I've ever peeled a mushroom. I do break the stalks off before cooking though.

Why waste half the mushroom?! Crazy.

Tiredmum100 · 09/08/2023 17:22

I peeled them because my mum always did. My husband told me recently I dont need to. Sometimes I clean under the tap, sometimes I peel. Living life on the edge.

cocoloco117 · 09/08/2023 17:31

How do mushrooms cope with rain if they sponge up so much water when washed?

Poorlymumma · 09/08/2023 17:34

I didn't know you could?

Jellybean23 · 09/08/2023 17:36

Cultivated mushrooms don't need peeling. Mary Berry wipes away any compost with a paper towel. If it's good enough for Mary ...

BMW6 · 09/08/2023 17:40

If they're nice and fresh I don't, but if they're getting a bit wrinkly I do. I find the skin gets quite leathery after a couple of days

Didn't even know this was a thing, or more to the point that you could peel them.

I just cook them, or eat them raw.

HeritageBlooms · 09/08/2023 17:52

I use a mushroom brush

Seeline · 09/08/2023 18:04

I usually just wipe with kitchen towel unless they've been in the fridge too long and gone a bit slimy. I'll peel the outer layer off then.

Mamadothehump · 09/08/2023 19:30

Nah, can't be arsed! I do flick the visible mud off though!!!

QueueEtwo · 09/08/2023 19:51

This is really weird but I was thinking about posting to ask about peeling mushrooms on Sunday when I was slicing some for Bolognaise!

I never do, my mum always did!

frolp · 09/08/2023 20:20

I LOVE peeling mushrooms. It's a lovely textured task.

(I'm probably weird!)

AngeloMysterioso · 09/08/2023 20:21

I don’t, I just chop the slightly grotty bit off the very end of the stalks

PurpleReindeer2 · 09/08/2023 20:42

Never peel them. Just wash them.

alwaysmovingforwards · 09/08/2023 23:42

I've never peeled a mushroom in my life and never heard of anyone doing this.
It's never actually occurred to me this is a thing to do. What's there to peel???

Just checking, is this a an in joke MN thread and I'm now looking silly??

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 10/08/2023 01:19

Thanks for the link. I see another mushroom thing that I thought was true 😮

I thought mushrooms were poisonous raw and had to be cooked.

Seddon · 10/08/2023 03:09

I just brush off visible dirt.

I don't eat raw mushrooms though, so I figure any invisible nasties from the soil are killed by heat.

Moonshine5 · 10/08/2023 06:58

Peeling Mushrooms is an (excellent) episode in series 2 of The Bear.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 10/08/2023 07:30

I sometimes peel my mushrooms; but only when eating them raw as I love to eat the 'skin' separately as it's more flavoursome.

Insidenumber09 · 10/08/2023 07:44

I always either peel OR wash them depends on the size, quality of them.

i have worked on a mushroom farm before as a picker and there’s always slugs on the bags of compost so …….. 😬

crazeekat · 10/08/2023 11:46

when i lived in Israel i was asked to peel the mushrooms. had no idea what to even do!!
now i do it most of the time unless they are reallly really fresh hard
mushrooms.

eandz13 · 10/08/2023 11:51

I commented on that thread saying I had no idea it was a thing and I just wash them off under the tap - then we added mushrooms to our meal last night and I stood at the sink and realised I use my thumbs to sort of rub away the fine grubby layer on the top as I'm rinsing them down. Am I a mushroom peeler?!?
