Netflix. Dd boyfriend using my account

My dd has just started seeing this lad. He is currently unemployed, still lives with parents. She was over at his last week and signed into Netflix on his TV. When leaving she didn't sign out as it seemed mean. I'm unsure really. If I change the password I can stop him continuing but don't want to embarrass dd by doing this. Also if she goes back again it will just be repeated. Wwyd? Ignore or get him signed out? We go on holiday soon ourselves and will be using Netflix whilst there some evenings.

How else do I respond to a post that has a previous quote in it?

Sorry for derailing op.

Copy and paste the text you want to quote.

Put an asterisk either side of the quote. It will
make it bold.

Et voila!

I don’t think I tried? But it’s bloody weird and illogical to call someone mean for not wanting a stranger to use a service they themselves pay for. I can’t get my head around why it’s mean?

But serous question - can I use your login? If not why not?

When you said people have "the perfect right" not to be thought of negatively for something.

You are against sharing so no, you can't share mine. It's called reciprocal altruism for a reason.

LadyBird1973 · 06/08/2023 14:37

@BeyondMyWits I'm guessing at some point Netflix will figure out his tv isn't linked to the OPs wifi address and will cut him off. That's what happened on my mums tv. But she can still log into it from her iPad.I guess Netflix doesn't know who owns what devices, if at some point they do get logged in from the home wifi.
I mean, I suppose if they're inclined, they could see how often a device is used in the home versus anywhere else, but I think Netflix are in danger of alienating customers who are paying the premium 5 screens that they don't really need and just let their mum use it or their kids. I don't think they are going to make as much money as they think by saying you have to pay extra - people like me will just cancel it or get a cheaper package. My mum wouldn't bother at all since she only watches it because it's there and free to her.

Plus they really need to raise the quality of content - it's been a bit rubbish for a while now. I haven't cancelled it because a) I can afford to wait it out until it improves and b) my mum does use it. But, I don't like feeling ripped off, which is what the additional charge feels like.
Netflix should be careful imo.

LadyBird1973 · 06/08/2023 14:39

I have heard of people getting their Netflix hacked by people in other countries, who then change all the subtitle settings to Spanish or something. Now that's cheeky fuckery Grin

CurlewKate · 06/08/2023 14:41

"I can't afford Netflix please can you give me your login details?"

If you were someone I knew-like my DD's boyfriend-yes of course I would.

WilkinsonM · 06/08/2023 14:41

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:45

@WilkinsonM …..well this is embarrassing.
You were not wrong! I was wrong. I didn’t know that until today. My apologies!

:) accepted!

It's called reciprocal altruism for a reason.
Because it's great and altruistic to deprive creators of fair pay for their work so someone can get their content for free instead of paying £5.99 a month for it.
God the hypocrisy on mumsnet astounds me sometimes.
THIS SORT OF PIRACY IS WHY SO MANY CONTENT CREATORS ARE ON THE POVERTY LINE.

Netflix made $4.4 billion net profit in 2022, the company’s first decline in net income since 2012.

Who cares. We always have an extra account and don’t mind who hops on it - usually someone’s partner.

diddl · 06/08/2023 15:11

I waited until they were on the penultimate episode and kicked them out 😂

Fabulous!

VioletLemon · 06/08/2023 15:15

WilkinsonM · 06/08/2023 12:11

Yes you can! It costs £5 per extra account. You just need to register the account and agree to pay the extra £5. Literally nothing bad will happen.

"Literally nothing bad will happen."

How simplistic. Maybe OP should offer access to her bank cards, can she pay the unemployed boyfriends utilities or shopping. Someone taking the piss out your child is something bad happening as its likely to lead to shit.

calmcoco · 06/08/2023 15:15

TrishM80 · 06/08/2023 12:02

How old are they, out of interest? I'd never let a daughter of mine date someone who's unemployed.

How can you enforce this on someone old enough to be out dating??

Waffle78 · 06/08/2023 15:16

It's fine if they're just watching what's included in your subscription. But some take the p* and watch some you need to pay extra for.

Someone watching your Netflix account is not 'taking the piss' and it's not 'something bad happening'. I suggest you get out more if you think it is.

Waffle78 · 06/08/2023 15:22

Someone did this with my Facebook but changed it to African. He sent me a PM declaring love for me I told him to f*off at and was hacked. Luckily I was on at the time. I managed to guess how to log out and changed my password. Then log in and change it back to English.

But most wealthy people and children of middle class families are unemployed.

Would you let her date a McDonald's worker with no career goals?

Someone happily accessing anything you have paid for without you saying, 'sure please use my account' is taking the piss. To me it's akin to popping into a purse for a tenner when you feel like it and adult dc getting the piss ripped out them is a bad thing to me. Thanks for your irrelevant suggestion.

Not on Netflix that's not possible

GennyGennyGenny · 06/08/2023 15:30

For those saying, why wouldn't you give him access, it sounds like OP doesn't even know him. It's bizarre to think that she should give him access in that case.

Also, it's not up to the OP's DD to make that decision. And the DD being reluctant to sign out in case it seemed mean, is she a mug-in-training?

Wht do you mean changed it to African? African is not a language.
