Netflix. Dd boyfriend using my account

My dd has just started seeing this lad. He is currently unemployed, still lives with parents. She was over at his last week and signed into Netflix on his TV. When leaving she didn't sign out as it seemed mean. I'm unsure really. If I change the password I can stop him continuing but don't want to embarrass dd by doing this. Also if she goes back again it will just be repeated. Wwyd? Ignore or get him signed out? We go on holiday soon ourselves and will be using Netflix whilst there some evenings.

Dd is 20. Boyfriend (and that's a loose term as they're not exactly an item) is 22. Recently unemployed. I don't dislike him, I don't even know him! I've only seen him out from a distance when dd told me where he used to work.
I'm going to sign him out. I won't tell dd and will wait for her to say something. But if I do that won't she just tell him my details so he can sign back in? We have Netflix premium through Sky.

I have never understood why password sharing was ever seen as ok - each household should just pay for their own account, as people do for all sorts of other services that are supplied to the home.

Change the password then and tell your daughter if she can't be trusted not to give out the password then she can't have it.

What on earth are people so concerned about if he has the Netflix account logged in? It's not the dark web, nothing will happen to you.

I agree. Mean spirited.

Fine if you can't watch it but jeez so many selfish people.

LookItsMeAgain · 06/08/2023 12:38

Your DD doesn't need the password. Set up a profile for her and let that be it.

If you have premium, dd is just going to assume she can give the log in details to her friends as well.

Have a word with her and say the account is for family only.

Once again, you’re wrong. We were locked out as partner’s ex was the last to use our Netflix account before password sharing policy was recently introduced.

My sister and my eldest son both used my account in separate locations. My sister was the first to go onto Netflix when the password malarkey started. She actually phoned me because she got a pop up asking her to confirm she was the primary location. I bet your partner's ex got that and said yes, locking you out.
Because my sister had called, I went into Netflix and got the same question. So I had to set her up as an extra account for £5 so she could keep using it.

OP this would be my worry, if your DD bf gets this when he opens netflix and locks you out by saying 'yes' to being the primary account owner so that he can continue using it.

@WilkinsonM which country do you live in?

England!
This is what you get if you're sharing a password- the option to pay for it

I'd guess Netflix has sophisticated software able to cope with users going on holiday.

You can log in and they log you out after a while

It's absolutely not selfish.
Would you hand over your phone to anyone who asked to use it?

LadyBird1973 · 06/08/2023 12:43

I wouldn't care about this.
I pay for 5 screens and I take a view that so long as I'm paying the bill, it should be my choice who uses those screens. If Netflix boot me out of my (expensive) paid for account then I'll just use Disney or Prime. And they can go without my money! A lot of their content is shit at the moment anyway - probably because they spunked too much money on the Harry and Megan series.

If it's not stopping you from using your own Netflix then I'd just be nice snd leave it be.

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:45

@WilkinsonM …..well this is embarrassing.
You were not wrong! I was wrong. I didn’t know that until today. My apologies!

I agree. It’s not like it’s expensive!

Sorry are you calling the OP selfish because she doesn’t want a stranger benefitting from a service SHE pays for?!

PerspiringElizabeth · 06/08/2023 12:48

He is currently unemployed, still lives with parents

?? how is that relevant? Just log him out.

Eddyraisins · 06/08/2023 12:48

Hardly the same. They have taken ops tele. It's jutting like lending a book or a DVD. It is selfish if it doesn't cause op harm but may cause conflict with her dd.

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:48

OP I have Netflix through Sky too and whilst it’s easier as I pay for it through Sky, it’s a PITA to manage the account as you have to go through Sky for certain thing like adding screens. I’d boot him off and if he logs back on change the password.

But this is the equivalent of raiding the OP’s bookshelf and DVD collection without permission

Change password to ''theladieslikeamanwithajob''

GoodChat · 06/08/2023 12:50

Don't give your daughter the password if she's going to share it with others.

Eddyraisins · 06/08/2023 12:51

Sorry are you calling the OP selfish because she doesn’t want a stranger benefitting from a service SHE pays for?!

Hardly a stranger. Her own dd uses it at his house. So her daughter stays over with a stranger. Ok.

LadyBird1973 · 06/08/2023 12:51

My mum did get signed out so can't access my Netflix on her tv. She can still watch on her iPad though. I don't see how Netflix can determine whether her iPad is hers or mine - sometimes it's logged into my wifi cos she's here.
Netflix also cut off my son's access, even though he does live here. So it seems like their capability to tell is flawed.

The thing is, my mum wouldn't buy Netflix and so if Netflix piss me off by being greedy instead of just letting me determine who uses the screens I pay for, I will just use something else and they still won't be getting any additional money.

W0tnow · 06/08/2023 12:51

It doesn’t cost you anything and doesn’t inconvenience you, that’s true. But using the Netflix account of someone you don’t know, and have never met, after a one off event, is taking advantage. It’s rude. I’m surprised at the posters who would do it. 😯
