Netflix. Dd boyfriend using my account

My dd has just started seeing this lad. He is currently unemployed, still lives with parents. She was over at his last week and signed into Netflix on his TV. When leaving she didn't sign out as it seemed mean. I'm unsure really. If I change the password I can stop him continuing but don't want to embarrass dd by doing this. Also if she goes back again it will just be repeated. Wwyd? Ignore or get him signed out? We go on holiday soon ourselves and will be using Netflix whilst there some evenings.

Yes you can! It costs £5 per extra account. You just need to register the account and agree to pay the extra £5. Literally nothing bad will happen.

Apart from paying unnecessarily to use your own account?!

How old are they, out of interest? I'd never let a daughter of mine date someone who's unemployed.

🤣🤣

Do you live in the 1800’s? If they are old enough to work you are not in a position to ‘allow’ your DD to date anyone. Unless you’re actively looking for her to absolutely despise you and go NC the moment she moves out?

Then again is a MN thread even a MN thread if someone doesn’t come in and have an irrelevant dig at the OP?

My friend has just been shut out of her own account at home because she regularly uses the account at her mum's house. Now Netflix for some reason believes her mum's house is the owning location!

That makes no sense. If it's her account then it won't matter which Wi-Fi she uses. Unless she's logging into her mum's for some reason.

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:13

DinoRoar14 · 06/08/2023 12:03

And how wise one would you enforce this on an autonomous individual?

She would lock her in her bedchamber and inform the village elders I’m guessing. Whilst said employed young man is sent away to an uncle’s in Brighton

I expect she is logging into her mum's WiFi, she works from their house.

You aren't getting me. Some people are saying if you let other households use your Netflix you'll be locked out or something. I'm saying no that won't happen, you'll just he asked if you want to pay £5 extra per month to let them be on yours account. You say no, they get kicked off and you pay exactly the same as before.

It does make sense. Are you not aware that Netflix has changed its policies?

What on earth are people so concerned about if he has the Netflix account logged in? It's not the dark web, nothing will happen to you.

Clearly you dont know anyone who has been caught by Netflix cracking down on passwords being shared in different houses

Doesn't matter if you care, Netflix do and who needs that hassle

Log his device out and explain the rules to your daughter

CurlewKate · 06/08/2023 12:15

Why on earth would you not let him use it?

The only 'cracking down' they are doing is asking if you want to pay £5 extra per month to allow the other household to keep access. It literally just happened to me with my brother using my account. Nothing bad will happen.

Sorry, you’re wrong.

It just happened. Literally a few days ago. I was asked if I wanted to pay extra to allow him to continue using the account. If I said no, he would have been logged out. I'm not wrong.

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:16

It doesn’t matter if ‘nothing will happen’ - id never let someone cadge off me for free when I pay for a service. Netflix starts at about £6 a month just pay for it yourselves you right bastards!

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:17

Once again, you’re wrong. We were locked out as partner’s ex was the last to use our Netflix account before password sharing policy was recently introduced.

As others have said - you’re wrong. Netflix now expect the screens to be used in the same household.

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 12:20

@WilkinsonM which country do you live in?

If this is the way it works, sounds great. People up and down the country can tell their CF friends and relatives that they had to sign the CF out because Netflix were going to charge them an extra £5 for that person.

This might help settle the debate:

What happens if you are on holiday and want to log into your Netflix account. Is it only valid from your home internet

what happens when when they come to take payment in the case of changing the address of the account holder.

wont payment fail as the addresses don’t match

NotAMug · 06/08/2023 12:22

It makes no sense with the sharing though, DS watches Netflix at his girlfriends, DS2 watches it at his grandparents, we watch it at home. Why should we have 3 subscriptions for that?

So far nothing has happened but I am guessing we aren't particularly high users and rarely watching at the same time.

Even if you get locked out then surely that's still not that bad. Cancel the account and open a new one 🤷‍♀️

I am not really sure how I'd feel about someone else using my netflix that I hadn't agreed to, if they used it a lot then perhaps that would raise the issue of account sharing.

A friend in Asia uses my UK Netflix account. No issues yes, from the look of their viewing history 🤣

I'd guess Netflix has sophisticated software able to cope with users going on holiday.

randomusernam · 06/08/2023 12:00

What's the problem with him using it? Are you finding you are getting kicked off for him? Feels a little petty if the only reason you don't want him using it is because he's unemployed and you don't like him. This sort of thing will just drive a wedge between you and daughter. I would just ignore unless it is causing problems. If it is, just explain to your daughter you are finding you can't use it now he is logged in and can she log him out.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Chowtime · 06/08/2023 12:28

just change the password so he can't get in. If anyone asks, say you're not allowed to do that which I expect is true anyway. I wouldn't give it to your daughter either - let him get a job and take her out! not sit around at his house watching netflix that YOU pay for lol.
