Netflix. Dd boyfriend using my account

Itsacebeingme · 06/08/2023 11:54

My dd has just started seeing this lad. He is currently unemployed, still lives with parents. She was over at his last week and signed into Netflix on his TV. When leaving she didn't sign out as it seemed mean. I'm unsure really. If I change the password I can stop him continuing but don't want to embarrass dd by doing this. Also if she goes back again it will just be repeated. Wwyd? Ignore or get him signed out? We go on holiday soon ourselves and will be using Netflix whilst there some evenings.

I have never understood why password sharing was ever seen as ok - each household should just pay for their own account, as people do for all sorts of other services that are supplied to the home.

Sharing is caring I guess.

If you pool resources with others, you all end up with more access to resources.

Reciprocal altruism. It's quite rational.

Eddyraisins · 06/08/2023 14:05

Exactly. And a book or DVD is a one off expense unlike a Netflix account.

Blush Probably a while mobth of streaming is less than a cost of a paperback.

Eddyraisins · 06/08/2023 12:37

I agree. Mean spirited.

Fine if you can't watch it but jeez so many selfish people.

Oh awesome! So happy to find someone who isn't mean-spirited about sharing!

I can't afford Netflix please can you give me your login details? Grin

Begsthequestion · 06/08/2023 14:00

Why are you so against sharing?

Don't other people share things with you in return?

If I did I would ask their permission first - but no I’ll buy my own stuff, especially if the equivalent cost is 20p per day. I’m not a tight arse or a chancer though

Haha yes can someone be selfless please and share their password with me if it’s not a problem? It’ll save me £11 a month. Sharing is caring right @Eddyraisins

Big chuckles. Hey. So funny.

I do give plenty of my stuff away to be fair. I also let my dds mate use my spotify. Clearly I can't give it to everyone. Dds boyfriend is hardly a stranger to ops family . But I guess you know that.

The funny thing is you probably think that's clever and totally the same.

KimberleyClark · 06/08/2023 14:13

I wouldn’t expect to share something someone else was paying for without contributing to the cost. That is cheeky fuckery whatever the cost happens to be.

Question for the lady bountifuls on here - would you mind, if you were paying for a weekly veg box, if other people were helping themselves to it?

"Tight arse" or "chancer", interesting options.

I agree that asking permission is fair but I'm guessing you'd probably complain even at that.

Your posting style is too confusing for me - normally posted bold quotes, not the other way around.

This boyfriend is a stranger to the OP, who pays the bill. Presumably you know your DD’s friend?

Much like you won’t share your password with us, strangers, she reasonably won’t share with a stranger either.

OK can you explain exactly why it isn’t the same?

Well I would because I’d think it’s a cheap service, pay for it yourself - I wouldn’t appreciate being put in them awkward position of having to say no.

Thought as much.

So basically you are against sharing, or even broaching the subject.

LadyBird1973 · 06/08/2023 14:18

It's not comparable to a veg box because it isn't a finite quantity. So long as you are paying for the screens, your users can watch unlimited content. Not really the same as nicking your spuds from a veg box lol

You can share all you want - no skin off my nose.

For me yes I’m against sharing and no one is getting my log in (especially now the rules have changed).

And others have the perfect right to not want to share their paid-for services with strangers without being called selfish or mean.

Yeah that's a false equivalence.

You can't both eat the same potato can you, like a pp said.

I do buy lots of soft drinks and dds friends drink it. She goveyot to them.
Double they would want my carrots.

It's not the same as a total random stranger.

I don't think you can claim rights over other people's opinions.

I don’t think I tried? But it’s bloody weird and illogical to call someone mean for not wanting a stranger to use a service they themselves pay for. I can’t get my head around why it’s mean?

But serous question - can I use your login? If not why not?

I am using the app. It won't let you quote something twice. So best way to differentiate is to bold my response as can't bold the copy and paste easily.
But thanks for being the posting police too. Have a nice day.

Not the thread police - you seem to be the only one on MN doing this and it’s confusing

But now you have to pay extra to use at a different address. All users are supposed to be at the same place, or to at least log in using the home network every so often... is the boyfriend going to bring his TV over?

WeetabixTowels · 06/08/2023 14:27

How else do I respond to a post that has a previous quote in it?

Sorry for derailing op.

I think some of you may have a coronary when I tell you this.

A couple of years ago we went on holiday. Signed into our Netflix account in the AirBnb and completely forgot to log out on check out.

Went home and two new profiles had been made on our account!

I went on them and noticed that they’d been watching a series (can’t for the life of me remember which). I waited until they were on the penultimate episode and kicked them out 😂
