I've a feeling we will get very far if not win.
Thrashed China 6-1.
Why the lack of interest?

Thankyou to all the positive posters.

I've been thinking about this post and maybe I worded it wrong.
BUT one thing I'm so proud of is that this can give young females positive role models which we are sadly lacking. Even if you take out the football element, they are highly disciplined athletes.
I'd rather my daughters watch this and are motivated than sitting on Netflix, eating junk and doing no exercise.

Sometimes it's about the bigger picture.

I have two daughters. I absolutely would not want them to look up to footballers.

Netball World Cup? I so agree!!

Exactly ! Zero mention of it anywhere other than on Sky. Very disappointing.

Why not? Especially in a nation of fat unhealthy women.

Because I don’t think football is an admirable career for either sex, but that’s by the by really because I wouldn’t want them to be heavily into any kind of sport.

RaininSummer · 02/08/2023 12:55

Meh, it's still football whichever sex is running about with a ball.

Cheaters and foul mouthed same as the men not really people to look up to.

Thank you. He is rather. We’ve only got girls in the family and he encourages them to follow whatever they want to.

From the start, even though I’m the least sporty person in ability, we’ve fostered an interest in team building, tactics, skills, personal goals, psychology and everything else that goes with successful sporting achievements at whatever level.

It’s so refreshing to hear of fathers being like that. Even the more enlightened men often don’t think that way, and encourage sons into sport much more than daughters.

Chequeredred · 02/08/2023 13:21

Maybe because most us were brought up at a time where football wasn’t something for most women to engage in.
We never played it in the school playground, we were never taken to play locally on a Saturday morning. We have had no female role models for most of our lives. Hopefully that will change when this generation grow up.

It’s unlikely we will suddenly become interested in a sport that has never been for us like Golf, or darts or weight lifting.

Just like men are unlikely to start watching synchronized swimming, rhythm gymnastics or ballet just because they now have male teams.

Why not?

Way better paid than the standard boring office job and you get to see the world rather than sitting at a desk all day long. I have a lot of respect for female athletes.

Money isn’t everything, and it doesn’t buy happiness. I’m sure some people are happy in their “boring office jobs”.

I don’t have any respect for them at all.

dressedforcomfort · 02/08/2023 13:47

In my defence, I couldn't give a shit about the men's game either....

TarquinOliverNimrod · 02/08/2023 14:01

I admire most athletes but loathe football culture. It’s aggressive and often players exhibit unsportsmanlike attitudes, openly swearing, racism, belligerence, hostility, cheating, diving, etc.

I encourage my son to be influenced by cricketers and rugby players. As athletes, they are far more inspirational.

If I had to watch football I’d opt for male teams in any case. Women’s football just doesn’t interest me at all.

Doesn’t make me anti the ‘sisterhood’ whatever bullshit that is 😂

I’m slim; I don’t like women’s football.

So much for you worrying about ‘sisterhood’

‘viterol’ 🤣

What are you on about? I don't like women's football as mentioned upthread but I'm not overweight or obese. I actually compete at a sport and do hours of exercise a week.

MermaidEyes · 02/08/2023 14:27

Wtf even is this thread?! I hate football, I'd rather pour bleach in my eyes than watch it, men, women or aliens playing. And as for the stereotypes mentioned - I grew up working class, I'm slim, fit and healthy - yup. Still hate football.

tttigress · 02/08/2023 14:29

What I find annoying is the fact that some women feel the need to follow men.

There are plenty of female dominated sports that could have been put on prime time before now (netball, hockey etc.).

The whole "Women's football" thing, seems very contrived to me, very media driven.

Women are equal to men, but that doesn't have to mean they should try to be men.

Other sports and activities are available...
Though given the national obsession with football you could be forgiven for not thinking so.
I think the fuss about women's football is a bit depressing actually. It's like people are only now realising that women can play sport well because they are participating in traditionally male pursuits. There are loads of incredible British women athletes across a wide range of sports - there is no shortage of positive female role models as far as I can see. Maddie Hinch? Laura Kenny? Ellie Simmons? Emma Raducanu? Eilish Mccolgan? Sarah Storey ? Dina Asher Smith? Kelly Holmes? And many more, past and present. Yes, the footballers are doing very well and deserve praise but they are not "better" than other sportswomen.
In fact there is a very real risk that the rise of women's football is to the detriment of other sports. Our local hockey club had to close a few years ago. The council converted the pitch to football despite there being over 30 football pitches in the borough and no other hockey facilities. Local businesses are all flocking to sponsor women's football and rugby teams around here because they want to be associated with what's currently fashionable and "inclusive". So the 2 biggest (still predominantly male) sports which are already best resourced are getting more and more and everyone else loses out. Tough luck to smaller sports, many of whom have been open to both women and men for donkeys years or are played mainly by women. They are competing for players against better resourced and publicised sports and as numbers drop, their resources drop and you get into a viscious cycle. As someone involved in 2 minority sports at grassroots level I'm not celebrating the growth of football too much.

I also find the attitude: "you are a woman, you must be interested in women's football" very patronising.

Same.

I enjoy watching women compete in tennis and athletics as those are sports that I enjoy. I'm not going to make myself watch a sport I don't enjoy to be part of the 'sisterhood'.
I'm glad the English women are doing well and wish them luck but I won't be watching.

You are calling people who don't agree fat bullies.

Why do you think people don't like being healthy and sport because they don't like football, football isn't the be all and end all of all sport and health.

You are the typical football fan who cannot see past end of their nose and people aren't as obsessed with football as they are.

There is a bully on this thread and I think we know it's you.

MyOtherCarisAFerrari · 02/08/2023 18:41

Wiccan · 01/08/2023 23:23

I was a gymnast for a number of years I like sports that test the body. Maybe what annoyed me about football was how many footballers didn't behave like athletes . Pissed up in nightclubs , smoking 20 fags a day seriously bad lifestyles and paid high amounts for it . Fan behaviour as well . So just not interested .

I feel the same way!
Also, I hate team sports.
I get that people want 'equal opportunity', and because men's football gets so much money having some of that flow towards women would be, well, equal.

But when you think about it sports are inherently unequal - there are sooo many of them that someone talented in a niche sport, male or female, is already at a disadvantage.

As a nation we would benefit from making exercise more accessible and the excessive focus on competitive team sports is off-putting for many non-sporty people, especially women. Yes, i know that women used to play football too before it was banned but football then was very different from what it is now.

Why pick football to zone in on, because the menz have decided that they like it? Why not focus on something else?
