I've a feeling we will get very far if not win.
Thrashed China 6-1.
Why the lack of interest?

I'm not interested in any kind of football, whoever is playing.

If I have any time for sport, I'd rather be doing it, than sitting on my bottom watching others. 40 minutes spare means I'm out running.

I'm glad they are doing well, but I think there are other, higher priorities.

bigageap · 02/08/2023 07:07

The timing of the matches has just not suited us as a family. If I am home for a game we will definitely watch it!

I never understand why I have to be interested in literally everything that women are doing just because I am one.

Ditto, I agree. I'm not interested in Wimbledon either nor women's golf. All the hype actually turns me off rather than makes me interested. Woman's football is being rammed down our throats and I couldn't care less.

thebellagio · 02/08/2023 07:26

Im
absolutely loving the women’s World Cup. My 9yo is following the lionesses and is obsessed with Alessia Russo.

sorry but the pp who said that a Sunday morning pub team is better standard is talking utter shit. Go and watch Lauren James’ performance and goals against china and tell me that’s not skill FFS

if you don’t like it/not your thing it’s really not a problem. But don’t degenerate something just because it’s not for you.

Whatafustercluck · 02/08/2023 07:31

I love football and haven't yet seen a match due to the kick off times as I'm working and rarely take a lunch break. So I think that has a lot to do with it.

My 12yo football mad ds has no excuse though, so I've made it clear I'm not impressed that he hasn't watched the women's but would drop everything for the men's WC. He was a bit offended I think, but took my point on the chin. We've said we'll watch the next one together.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/08/2023 07:37

People (anyone) kicking a ball around a field doesn’t interest me

i’m mostly getting ready to go to work, or am work when the games are on

Only England are there out of the home nations. I’m not an England fan in any sport

Just because it’s women playing doesn’t change any of the above.

Againstmachine · 02/08/2023 07:43

Geranuimgal · 01/08/2023 20:20

It's more than just football though, it represents the skill of the women of this country. I just thought more females would be behind them.

No it really isn't, it's just football don't make out it's something special it isnt, same as the men's a boring sport.

If you want to like it fair enough but making out people who don't are spiteful or jealous is pathetic.

CoffeeandCheesecake · 02/08/2023 07:43

I love international football tournaments, and I've been loving the women's world cup. Some really good matches and performances (Colombia v Germany, Japan v Spain, England v China) After the game yesterday I'm really excited for the team, and the next match. I thought we looked a bit shaky in the first two games, so I'm glad we seem to have hit our stride!

Zebedee55 · 02/08/2023 07:46

Women's football just doesn't interest me.

But, I wish them well. 👍

Coronationstation · 02/08/2023 07:48
  1. I live in Scotland so England playing into a major tournament doesn’t tend to hit our news so much
  2. I don’t really follow football regardless of who’s playing
  3. the matches are on at “odd” times of day for UK viewers
onefinemess · 02/08/2023 08:51

Because very few women care about football. And most people on here are women.

And people tend to watch sport to see elite players compete at being the best. With women's football (no disrespect) when compared to male players, the women are slower, so the games are not as exciting to watch I suppose. So outside of the players and their families and friends, I don't think anybody really bothers to watch women's football.

I caught a glimpse of it on TV recently, and it was obvious that the half empty stadium was peopled by the players entourage, not genuine spectators.

Chemenger · 02/08/2023 08:55

The list of all the things I’m more interested in than football, whoever it is played by, would take longer to read than the whole tournament. Football is a cult. Just because this is women’s football doesn’t make it more interesting.

Capitulatingpanda · 02/08/2023 08:56

Can't be arsed with international football.
I still watch men's and women's club football but my interest in international has dwindled to zero. Honestly my interest in sport in general is getting less and less the more corrupted and ruined by excessive money and dodgy dealings it becomes.

KimberleyClark · 02/08/2023 08:56

I find women’s rugby a better watch than women’s football tbh.

I was interested to see that the Canadian football team includes a transman. But as he’s biologically female that’s OK.

No1careworker · 02/08/2023 08:56

We had it on in the office, great game. Mind you I love football and most sports. Only thing I watch on TV is sport. I watched the cricket the day before, watched us win the netball last night. We were at Wembley a year ago when the women won the European Cup, that was a stressful game to watch! I love it personally.

It's a good team & I hope they do well. Inspiring. But China aren't very good, so let's see.

All footballers have to train their non dominant leg.

It doesn't mean they can't use the other one, they just need to practice with both.

Yes. This. She can use her right foot (or most dominate leg)but they also need to strengthen and use their non dominate leg. That's why most professional footballers are skilled with both feet.

Niftyswiftie · 02/08/2023 09:01

I'm obsessive about football really really love it but I'm just not into the women's world cup (I'm a woman by the way). The atmosphere just isn't the same, the press coverage isn't there and also the time difference plays a massive part. Usually we'd be down the pub with our friends or have friends over to ours for food and drink to watch the game but these games are all in the morning on weekdays. We're all at work so can't watch them at all let alone watch them with friends and get excited about the scores.
Our next game is Monday morning at 8.30am, rubbish timing.

My DD(15) is the least sporty person in the world. She gets it from me.

I'm absolutely thrilled that she's completely obsessed with the Women's World Cup (Football) at the moment. It's her reason to get out of bed each day! She follows the players, knows their skills and playing history. I love that she's found some positive role models to inspire her.

I hope England keep doing well, as I'd hate for DD to revert to her hibernation until school restarts.

I love this. Me and my mates played football a bit at university. One of my friends was really good and the coach suggested she trial for a local club..but her parents were against it and said there's no money in it.

So she gave it up. There were literally no woman footballers earning any money to look up too. Alex Scott speaks about playing for Arsenal and having to submit her dissertation the night before the FA Cup Final and she was paid £30 to play and wore the last seasons mens kit. Thierry Henry was on thousands a week at the same time.

We've come a long way in the development of woman's football and I really hope this influences the other sports as well such as rugby.

Go Emgland!!!

Remaker · 02/08/2023 09:05

You’ll be happy to know they are getting a huge amount of support here in Australia OP. Sold out stadiums even when Australia isn’t playing. In my home sport is king/queen and I am quite relieved the Ashes is over so we are only splitting our viewing time between the football and netball world cups. England are also doing very well in the netball in case you’re interested!

DH is English so we support both countries unless they play each other in which case it’s me and the kids vs DH.

It's really not bollocks, the American world cup winning team from a few tournaments ago were beaten 5-2 by an under 15 boys team from Dallas.
My daughter and I love football and are cheering the Lionesses on, we also have season tickets at our local Premier League team.
I'm a woman before anybody suggests otherwise but let's not kid ourselves, a decent men's pub team would comfortably beat the eventual winners and if you know the game that is obvious. Come on England !

Any football team composed of men is at a huge advantage in terms of size, strength and speed over one composed of women. The women’s game is exceptionally skilful and strategic, but unfortunately unlikely to prevail over the physical advantages men possess if the teams are otherwise equally matched.
Having said that, I don’t think I agree about the pub team remark.

MNetcurtains · 02/08/2023 09:16

Me (in the same room as the TV): Don't put the football and then go off doing other things.
DH: But, it's the women's football!
Me: It's still football.🙄

Popworld · 02/08/2023 09:25

I havent read the whole thread.so this might of been brought already

But this is part of the issue of woman not getting the same/more then men in money . They actually get paid a much higher % then men .

If it was spectated in the same numbers woman athletes could easily end up getting paid much more based on the current % of revenue.
