I've a feeling we will get very far if not win.
Thrashed China 6-1.
Why the lack of interest?

I also think football brings out the worst in people. It's not a good look for a player to start whining that the referee was picking on her.

The women don't get the sort of salaries the men get, but they are not paid badly relative to the rest of the population and this sort of whining is unprofessional.

I’m an equal opportunities hater of football. Don’t care who’s playing, I’m just not fussed!

Yes.

It annoys me hearing anyone describing sport as important, and saying that it's good to get the women's football as high profile as the men's.

No, the men's game should fuck off to the obscurity of the women's.

And Sweet Caroline can fuck off and all.

Don't get me started on sporting events/outcomes being described as historic. Unless you're Jesse Owens etc or a banned Russian athlete, it's just a bunch of people titting around at a very niche physical pursuit.

FrenchandSaunders · 02/08/2023 10:23

I think some people think football is common .... particularly where I live. They'd much prefer their DCs (girls and boys) to get into rugby. They seem to think it gives them superiority in some way and it's fashionable to slag off footie and make a big point of stating that they never watch it.

I'm really enjoying it, my DDs are adults now but both played football for about a decade and I miss watching them on a Sunday morning.

I agree that the timings of this world cup aren't great though .... it was fun to watch the Euros in the pub or around someone's house.

Bairnsmum05 · 02/08/2023 10:27

I'm not English so have no invested interest in it.

It's more than just football though, it represents the skill of the women of this country. I just thought more females would be behind them.

But so does lots of other sports.

I cannot stand football. Netball I will watch, gymnastics I love watching, but football - neh.

girlfriend44 · 02/08/2023 10:44

im watching.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 02/08/2023 11:04

I'm not really interested in football, but I have to feign interest when a certain female relative (also a lesbian) visits as she lives and breaths football and wants to be a lioness in a few years time.

JamSandle · 02/08/2023 11:04

I dont like men's or womens football. But im very happy that the women are doing so well!!!

Geranuimgal · 02/08/2023 11:10

Thankyou to all the positive posters.

I've been thinking about this post and maybe I worded it wrong.
BUT one thing I'm so proud of is that this can give young females positive role models which we are sadly lacking. Even if you take out the football element, they are highly disciplined athletes.
I'd rather my daughters watch this and are motivated than sitting on Netflix, eating junk and doing no exercise.

Sometimes it's about the bigger picture.

Swanswimming · 02/08/2023 11:16

I'm not going to start taking an interest in a sport that bores me just because women take part. I'm not going to start faking an interest just to discuss some feminist issues.
To be fair, your initial post was just about football as a sport, no mention of the wider issues around women in the sport.

'I've a feeling we will get very far if not win.

Why the lack of interest?'

My lack of interest is because I couldn't care less which team wins a football match. Any football match.

Well, 'we', as in the team from my country, are not even in it, so that's one reason I am not overly enthused. I have been watching/chatting about some of it, but I better not reveal who I want to win, because it might not go down too well with my friends south of the border! Enjoy it if it's your thing, but it's clearly not everyone's thing. 😁

CwmYoy · 02/08/2023 11:20

It's even more tedious than men's football.

Your dh is excellent!

Thank you. He is rather. We’ve only got girls in the family and he encourages them to follow whatever they want to.

From the start, even though I’m the least sporty person in ability, we’ve fostered an interest in team building, tactics, skills, personal goals, psychology and everything else that goes with successful sporting achievements at whatever level.

That's the fine, but why do you think a lack of Mumsnet threads somehow indicates a lack of interest in sport? People can be interested in something without needing to post on Mumsnet about it, and it's weird to assume otherwise.

FrippEnos · 02/08/2023 12:03

What I find disappointing is that it takes football for people to start going on about women's sport.
There are so many other sports that rarely get a look in because we are all expected to love football, Even rugby and tennis take lower rankings on the wonder scale.
Where are the complaints about the netball coverage? or the lack of hockey or other sports that women have done well in being televised?

Zebedee55 · 02/08/2023 12:09

Niftyswiftie · 02/08/2023 09:01

I'm obsessive about football really really love it but I'm just not into the women's world cup (I'm a woman by the way). The atmosphere just isn't the same, the press coverage isn't there and also the time difference plays a massive part. Usually we'd be down the pub with our friends or have friends over to ours for food and drink to watch the game but these games are all in the morning on weekdays. We're all at work so can't watch them at all let alone watch them with friends and get excited about the scores.
Our next game is Monday morning at 8.30am, rubbish timing.

Yeah, I'm the same. Watch all the England matches, and watch as many Spurs matches as I can.

Just can't get interested in women's football through.

RedPony1 · 02/08/2023 12:11

i dislike football, whoever is playing, so it's of zero interest to me.

BlowDryRat · 02/08/2023 12:15

YABU. I couldn't care less about football but have bought the Lionesses book for my DC and liked various FB posts in the spirit of sisterhood. DS is into football and has watched some games. I might have watched too if the games had been in the evening. As it is, I have little things like work to do and I don't like football so I'm certainly not giving up weekend days to watch!

Zippedydodah · 02/08/2023 07:02

Of course I support equal pay for women too but no way does that mean I therefore have to watch sport Ffs!
Ridiculous comment.

But pay is intrinsically linked to revenues brought in. If there's no viewership then there's no revenues/sponsorship.

I could start a tiddlywinks competition but if nobody watched it I couldn't expect to get paid £100k a week. However, if it took off and more than half of all British women were tuning in I'd likely be able to monetize it.

The entertainment industry is about making money not meeting feminist goals (if you can excuse the pun lol).

Poorlymumma · 02/08/2023 12:20

I think interest will start to pick up if and when they get closer to the final, like it did when they won the Euro's. People love to watch England win at anything and the Euro win was huge for women's football as it was the first time a lot of people ever watched it and supported it in the UK. So there is definitely a feminist, feel good thing surrounding it for me. It just hasn't really got to the exciting stages yet.

Letitgonowgr · 02/08/2023 12:21

I don’t like football whoever is playing it! Why should we be more interested as it’s women?!

MomentOnTheLips · 02/08/2023 12:22

I think men are doing more for women's sport than women are! All the lads at work have been watching.

Freepo · 02/08/2023 12:26

I love men’s football and have been watching to for 30 years. Unfortunately I can’t get into the women’s game in the same way.

I'm avidly watching the women in the netball World Cup, they are awesome. I’m also going to be watching the women in the hundred this month. I’m not anti women’s sport, I just prefer men’s in that particular sport.

Or this

You know what, that popped into my head as soon as I hit post. I suppose taking the knee (or not) constitutes history.

Henry VIII's sporting injuries may well have had a genuine and significant effect on history.

But not John Whoever swimming his swimmiest. Swimmer than anyone has swum before. That is the kind of nonsense I hate.
