I've a feeling we will get very far if not win.
Thrashed China 6-1.
Why the lack of interest?

I’m an equal opportunities hater of football. Don’t care who’s playing, I’m just not fussed!

This is me too!

BCCoach · 01/08/2023 23:31

No interest in football. The Tour de France Femmes has been riveting though.

Gazelda · 01/08/2023 23:36

My DD(15) is the least sporty person in the world. She gets it from me.

I'm absolutely thrilled that she's completely obsessed with the Women's World Cup (Football) at the moment. It's her reason to get out of bed each day! She follows the players, knows their skills and playing history. I love that she's found some positive role models to inspire her.

I hope England keep doing well, as I'd hate for DD to revert to her hibernation until school restarts.

Elfer13 · 02/08/2023 00:02

It's really not bollocks, the American world cup winning team from a few tournaments ago were beaten 5-2 by an under 15 boys team from Dallas.
My daughter and I love football and are cheering the Lionesses on, we also have season tickets at our local Premier League team.
I'm a woman before anybody suggests otherwise but let's not kid ourselves, a decent men's pub team would comfortably beat the eventual winners and if you know the game that is obvious. Come on England !

Me too. I can't stand football, whether there's one ball on the field or 46.

Cheesenpickleontoast · 02/08/2023 00:43

I think it may be because there's no round up or highlights programme on in the evening, which I think is a mistake. I miss or forget the matches are on in the morning. It would really help build up interest if the highlights were on in the evening. I enjoy the matches when I can sit down to see them and wish there had been more womens football and sport on TV when I was growing up (90's)!

MomentOnTheLips · 02/08/2023 00:55

I think it's a bit ironic how so many women moan about female athletes getting paid less than men but then won't actually support them or contribute to the viewing figures in any way.

QuestionableMouse · 02/08/2023 00:56

I have no interest in football regardless of the people playing!

Geranuimgal · 01/08/2023 20:20

It's more than just football though, it represents the skill of the women of this country. I just thought more females would be behind them.

Referring to women as ‘females’ as if we’re a bunch of animals rather than human women is not my idea of supporting women. Very much the language of your bog-standard Random Internet Misogynist.

FWIW I’m a huge football fan and I’ve been keeping up with the World Cup (although as most of the games are in the mornings when I’m at work, I haven’t been able to watch much live). But why on earth would I need to start a thread on fucking Mumsnet about it? Since when was that any indication of sporting interest? I have plenty of people to talk to about football in real life and on social media; I don’t need to post something like “AIBU to be watching the World Cup?” on Mumsnet just for the sake of it.

Tessisme · 02/08/2023 01:00

The comments on this thread have made me sad.

You must be exceptionally sensitive. It doesn't make any sense to be sad because other human beings don't like something that you like. There's nothing 'unfeminist' about disliking football, if that's the angle you're coming from. And there's no reason to suddenly watch or like football just because a bunch of women are chasing the ball instead of men.

It is possible to believe that women should receive equal pay without actively liking or participating in what they do for a living.

Really? You honestly believe this? My teenage daughter plays football at a reasonably high level and her team would kick the arse off a mens semi pro team let alone a 'decent pub team'. This not about supporting female sport just because they are women but about acknowledging that womens sports is as valid and engaging as any other sport out there. If you can't do that then stop talking. Women and girls have been demotivated and removed from perceived male sports for generations, it is bad enough that men claim that womens football is irrelevant without other women doing the same. You don't have to like the sport but for christ sake don't disparage the competitors simply because of their gender.

MrsAvocet · 02/08/2023 01:15

I agree with many PPs. Women playing football holds a similar level of interest for me as men playing football - next to none. Just because we're women, women's sport isn't automatically of interest to us. A tedious sport doesn't magically become thrilling when women play it.
The time difference has been really helpful. The timing of most of the matches has made the whole thing very easy to ignore and there hasn't been the disruption of tv schedules that normally accompanies major football tournaments.I hadn't actually realised it had started until a few days ago. Ideally I'd like to see all football taking place at these kind of times and on another continent mind you.

ejbaxa · 02/08/2023 01:26

I don’t enjoy watching football, regardless of whether women or men are playing. I imagine that’s why there’s not more internet on here - many people feel like this.

My dh likes football and is watching the lionesses.

yogasaurus · 01/08/2023 20:14

I just can’t get into womens football, sorry.

This.

larkstar · 02/08/2023 01:38

The quality of England's football has been outstanding, most of the goals have been a work of art, skills on the ball, teamwork, mentality, composure, determination... it's been brilliant. Millie Bright was immense today, Daly's turns completely outfoxed them down the wing.... I'm also on an almost exclusively men's musicians forum (women are welcome, there just aren't many on the site) and there is a huge amount of respect and appreciation for what England's women are doing...I think they are the jewel in the crown of English sport atm.

lljkk · 02/08/2023 05:41

Sunday league fandom requires standing in the blowing rain and in my case would mean cheering on people I don't know.

PuttingDownRoots · 02/08/2023 05:50

It is an acknowledged fact that yes, the top teenage boys are faster than stronger than the top female athletes. Maybe they could beat the top womens football teams with brute force.
But football requires skill as well and I'm no expert, but there is definitely skill at the WC.

drinkuptheezider · 02/08/2023 06:48

I've wondered how long term this will pan out. Men banned the game a hundred years ago because it was more popular than the men's game. They are in danger of becoming more popular again.

It will take time, but once revenue increases from the women's game, they will feel threatened again.
For those saying about the standard of the 2 sides, yes, women are behind men, at the moment, we are 50 years behind. Look at the mens game 50 years ago, completely different to now. The game will be different also because of the differing physical differences.

tttigress · 02/08/2023 06:51

I'm not a football fan, so I'm not going to change just because it is women.

Plus the match times probably don't help.

I also find the media (BBC specifically) hype around the event odd. According to the BBC the whole nation is obsessed by this event, whereas the reality as shown by this thread is different.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 02/08/2023 06:56

I'm never interested in group stages. I'll pick it up at the knockouts.

tttigress · 02/08/2023 06:56

I also find the attitude: "you are a woman, you must be interested in women's football" very patronising.

FrenchBullFrog · 02/08/2023 06:59

We’re enjoying it, even DH who has never watched women’s sports before has said it’s great to see women having a go.

Yesterday’s game was brilliant!

Of course I support equal pay for women too but no way does that mean I therefore have to watch sport Ffs!
Ridiculous comment.
