Climate lockdowns

As seen in the media recently, Europe is experiencing extreme heat, fires ect caused by climate change and global warming. It's terrifying. what sort of things can be done, will climate lockdowns help?

Do you think we'll have voluntary or mandatory climate lockdowns? Aka banned from travelling, no flights, cars ect, no red meat, encouraged to walk or cycle,15 minute cities?

When do you think it might or will happen? What will it look/be like? Will you voluntarily lockdown and reduce your carbon footprint? Or does the government habe to mandate climate lockdowns?

I find the "we're only 2% contributors to emissions" line irritating and ignorant. Apart from the points made upthread about pushing emissions responsibility offshore, it's still 2%!

If 50 people lined up to punch you in the face would you feel fine about all of them because they each only contributed 2% of your pain?

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2023 11:16

2% is disproportionately high considering our population is less than 1% of the global total.

jrc1071 · 01/08/2023 11:21

No, I would not lock down. I would refuse to do it.

Over 50% of the weather data that is used in these mathematical models are coming from weather stations at airports.

There has been plenty of studies that prove that airports are their own micro climate with higher temperatures. This due to the tarmacs and jet engines.

So the temperature data being used is already artificially inflated.

there are also other current areas being research that are not being discussed, for example, the exothermic pressure being released from the earth’s core, which is around 8000 km deep.

This heat is then released into our atmosphere and the exothermique increased pressure is due to magnetic fields affected by thermal flare ups from Sun.

No to climate lock downs, but I think there are going to be some changes over time.

France have or are in the process of banning internal flights if the journey could be done by train within a certain number of hours I think. Need good trains though.

For info the French ban is a worthy effort but it has had to be introduced with so many caveats/exceptions, for example to avoid stuffing business day travel, or to avoid people simply choosing to take longer short haul flights to connect to/from Long haul services via London or Frankfurt that it's had limited impact on the number of internal flights.

There's a fairly reasonable description of it all here:

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/france-ban-short-haul-flights-180982268/#:~:text=The%20ban%20is%20part%20of,compared%20with%20numbers%20from%201990).

The French government is pushing travelers on certain routes to use high-speed rail.

France Just Banned Short-Haul Flights. Why Are So Few Routes Affected?

To reduce carbon emissions, lawmakers want travelers to opt for trains on shorter journeys

The point remains. None of the climate rules apply to the rich. Not one single one.

It’s like we learned nothing from Covid. the government clearly didn’t believe that Covid was anything to worry about, which is why they went about their lives normally. Office affairs, days out, rowdy parties. But they duped the little people into believing they needed to be locked in their own homes.

This is what’s happening now.

What point are you trying to make exactly? The rich have never played by the rules, even when it comes to criminal activity.

Should we just scrap all laws and regulation because a handful of arseholes can buy their way out of trouble?

Climate lockdowns are 100% a conspiracy theory, you can literally trace the idea back to the inability of some people to understand that 15 minute cities were / are a planning concept, and one that is actually beneficial to the average person.

It's a truly bizarre situation we are in when elements of the poorest in society are arguing FOR making their lives more difficult and costly.

Scarlett89 · 01/08/2023 13:14

It's not experiencing extreme heat though is it. No different than normal, just the news telling you its extreme. The fires in Greece were set by humans camping they have been in court for it. But obviously we are not shown that on the news just the fear mongering.

Asiatoyork · 01/08/2023 13:32

@notimagain thanks for that. Hopefully there will be learning and policies will continue to develop to become effective.

Sozzler · 01/08/2023 13:36

I would like to think that we will use our technological advancements to reduce our carbon output and live more sustainable lives; that the most environmentally sustainable living choices will become the most affordable and convenient, and that we will live less hectic lifestyles, making us better able to live in a more climate friendly way. However, this would involve a shift from our current capitalist economies to ones focused more on environmentalism and social well-being, and with a lot of Western citiziens conitinuing to deny climate change exists and voting in politicians who serve coporate, capitalist interests, I am not holding my breath that we will do this in time. So yes, it may well come to increased citizen control, whilst those with wealth and power will get to continue on as they always have.

My point was that it formula milk did not exist and babies had to survive on breast milk alone, there would be a lower population.
I’m not sure any woman would or even could breast feed 7 children to survive childhood. Anyhow, breast feeding (generally) inhibits conception so you would not have many children born within 2-3 years of one other.

Of course you could have families of 7 or more surviving before formula. Look at Victorian England for a start! Big families were the norm.

Tbf there was something like 40x infant mortality rate to today.

Kazzyhoward · 01/08/2023 18:59

Are you insane? None of that will ever happen. No politicians would be stupid enough to even suggest it.

What WILL happen is "bad" things will become increasingly expensive through taxes, levies, etc., such as travel where additional taxes/duties/levies can be added to flights, fuel, ships/ferries, etc to discourage harmful activity.

DinnaeFashYersel · 01/08/2023 19:06

Are you missing Covid.

manticlimactic0 · 01/08/2023 23:25

Wsmi · 31/07/2023 20:47

You’d be surprised. Remember all those begging to be locked down over an illness that would morning harm a vast majority of healthy adults. They couldn’t get enough of it. Never underestimate the power of stupid.

Indeed! A work colleague is contemplating cancelling her Turkey holiday. Madness. Fear factor ramping up again.

Makes you wonder if these kind of people do any of their own research of the news reports. Oddly enough it's disappeared from the top stories on the main news broadcast

When I see blanket coverage and non stop reports it makes me look for what they AREN'T reporting

I think it's the opposite

OP is using covid rhetoric to wind people up against climate change action

All very obvious

Until they sort China out, this country has very little to feel guilty about. We only produce 2% of the damage to the environment, we are producing most of our energy by green methods & are leading the way in green engineering.

Who do you think China is polluting on behalf of? If all of the products we consume in the UK were manufactured in the UK, you’d see our true carbon footprint, which would probably be in the double digits. Imagine how many polluting factories we’d need just to manufacture our mobile phones and air fryers?

It’s extremely disingenuous to claim the UKs only responsible for a tiny amount and it’s Chinas or India’s fault when they are making our stuff. If people in the UK bought nothing for a whole year, ‘China’s’ emission numbers would significantly drop in that same year. Average Chinese consumes less than westerners.

Funny how you toss out your ott post then disappear...

EveSix · 02/08/2023 04:18

Debating the climate would be infinitely more constructive and to the point if words like 'they' and 'China' were restricted.
Not sure if actual climate lockdowns will be imposed, but I can definitely see a future where conditions are such that aspects of human movement and consumption are curtailed by circumstance and moderation measures.

What a crock of shit you've cooked up.

Mostly for enabling the anti-lockdown numpties, who've been mercifully silent of late, to start whining again. Or is that your purpose (sic).

malificent7 · 02/08/2023 06:07

I used to worry about green issues. Now i think life is too short and we should just have fun while we are here. Animals have always gone extinct and we are no different. Adapt or die and we don't adapt to our environment well...we try to manipulate it which is our downfall.

Yetisrus29 · 02/08/2023 06:13

We're partly in the mess we're in now due to lockdowns I can't see people accepting them again. I mean seriously this country is suffering financially and you just want to make it worse!

speakingofart · 02/08/2023 06:26

There is literally nothing the lockdown lovers will stop at to try to drag us back down, is there? You lost, people no longer listen to your scaremongering, get
over it.

There is much more we could and should be doing to help the environment but you aren’t going to manage to recreate your facist wankfest over it.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 06:46

Where is OP, is it NannyAndJohn missing lockdown.

stayathomer · 02/08/2023 06:51

Personally I think we should. There was the slightest reset in the ozone over the pandemic. I think the governments should just stop manufacturing certain materials and help the companies that make them adapt. I look at things like fizzy water and party materials for example. Totally unnecessary. Have flying become something done less often/for necessity only. And they should lead and just do it not suggest it to the people as then you have people say ‘nuh uh- I won’t!’

stayathomer · 02/08/2023 06:53

Sorry I hit post too soon. But it’s up to them to invest- people need better transport, more eg electric cars, better insulation and things like solar panels available to all. They’re expensive and the average person can’t afford them
