To ask how much annual leave you have left?

We are 7 months through the year and have 5 months left of this annual leave year (assuming yours runs jan - dec.

My annual entitlement is 26 days plus bank holidays. I have taken 10, have 8 booked and 8 left to book. I can carry a week over.

My manager thinks having 8 outstanding days to book is a lot at this point of the year, but if I carry 5 over I only have 3 really.

How many days do you have left to book at this point/ what is normal?

Seriously? I’ve never known a country so full of holiday takers. Why?

Because it is part of people's compensation package. It's no different from taking the whole salary.

I have 7 days still to book before Christmas but if I can't think of anything to use them for I can sell up to 5 days back to the company.

DH's runs Jan to Dec. He's got 12 booked (half term, Christmas and some time for DD's first week of school where it's part days), and 6 left unbooked. He was able to buy some extra leave so has taken 10. We deliberately weighted it to the end of the leave year because of starting school. I doubt we'll be in such a good position next year as we'll have had more school holidays to cover.

With 26 days leave, if it was being taken fairly evenly you'd expect something around 14 taken by now and 12 left. You've only taken 10 so maybe a bit under that but not drastically so.

If the 8 booked is to take during the summer hols then 8 left for 4 months (Sep-Dec) and 18 taken in 8 months (Jan-Aug) is pretty perfect.

Every parent I know keeps a couple of days back in case of kid illnesses.

The rolling over thing depends a bit on your works attitude to it - in our place you can roll leave over, but they really don't want you to and you're supposed to make efforts to use it. Our leave year runs May to May and we always have soooooo many people off in April it makes getting stuff done a real pain!

Mine runs apr-end march.

Taking into account that I am off today and I have already allocated a 3 week break in august, I still have 32 days to use between 30th August and 30th March. (I am in the final year of a 3 year cycle where we can carry up to 10 days/year so I need to use it all this year).

@BlueKaftan - why wouldn't you if it's your entitlement? Are you outside the UK?

Being scornful of people who use their annual leave allowance is an attitude you see on social media from a certain hyper capitalist 'be the first to arrive at the office, last to leave at the end of the day' type.

At a guess, are you American? I've never known such a country of holiday refusers! It's really not healthy to feel so insecure at work that you're scared to take a leave allowance you're contractually entitled to. In my experience in most Western countries it's the norm to take the leave you're entitled to.

Most people prefer not working rather than working. That's why employers have to offer people money in exchange for their labour.

It's the law. Full time workers must have at least 28 days holiday per year, which includes public holidays. It's also part of your package, so not taking it is a bit like not taking all your salary

I think you might be in the Netherlands where...

a) you get more Public Holidays on top of your annual leave allowance than the UK does. Neth = minimum 20 days annual leave + 11 public holidays = 32 days. UK = minimum of 28 days inclusive of 8 public holiday = 28 days.
b) your average working week is shorter, average 32.2hrs per week compared to the UK's 36.4hrs per week. That's the equivalent of another 26 x 8 hour days per year over the Netherlands, which may go some way to explain why the Brits need their holidays more Grin

Our leave year goes from 1st April to 31st March. My entitlement is 236.8 hours, which is 32 days (plus bank holidays), and I have purchased a further five days via salary sacrifice.

I have used 16 days so far this year, so 21 days left.

If we purchase annual leave, we are not allowed to carry anything over, as it's deemed that you didn't need the extra days.

Polis · 01/08/2023 11:15

Mine runs October to September. Three weeks booked off before then and I’ll probably be carrying over ten days.

user64827771 · 01/08/2023 15:26

After august break, I will 17 days left.

Work2live · 01/08/2023 15:28

I started a new job halfway through the year. I have 10 days booked so far (for birthdays, Christmas etc) and 3.5 days left to use.

blobby10 · 01/08/2023 15:40

Mine is Jan-Dec although none permitted in December. 19 days to choose when we like as BH and Christmas shutdown are fixed. This year I've taken 11 so far but as I'm running the place I have to fit around everyone else so will have to grab days off inbetween other key peoples holidays! Haven't used my full allowance since 2019 and didn't take any during 2020 but we don't carry over and don't sell them back. I'm an idiot.

springtome · 01/08/2023 17:36

All are booked in. I am limited to taking them in school holiday. I get 32 days plus bank holidays.

I am taking 6 days this month, a week in October half term, 2 weeks at Christmas (including 3 BH so 7 days A/L) and a week on feb half term.

We can't carry any holidays over so have to take them before 31 March.
