To ask how much annual leave you have left?

popgoesthecat2 · 31/07/2023 17:54

We are 7 months through the year and have 5 months left of this annual leave year (assuming yours runs jan - dec.

My annual entitlement is 26 days plus bank holidays. I have taken 10, have 8 booked and 8 left to book. I can carry a week over.

My manager thinks having 8 outstanding days to book is a lot at this point of the year, but if I carry 5 over I only have 3 really.

How many days do you have left to book at this point/ what is normal?

I imagine the carrying over isn't meant to be the norm?

SleepingStandingUp · 31/07/2023 19:58

DH has the annual leave in this house
He gets the basic amount.
He has 5 days booked for holidays, 1 for school stuff, 1.5 for me going away,1 for him going away and 1 left. We've not been away yet so it's mainly been used up on hospital appts for the kids, cover so I can take kids to the hospital etc. He has to book Xmas out of his allowance so that's gone already.

I would think that more than half way through the year and having used up less than half is a fair bit left. You've got AL booked in and still need in theory to book nearly two more weeks off in probably Sept - Dec.

I know you can carry over, but that just pushes the burden to next year.

HOwever it really isn't an issue unless you're looking to book the whole of December off

CatsOnTheChair · 31/07/2023 20:01

Me: fixed leave. All of August, a week in October, and 2 weeks over Xmas/new year.
DH - leave runs from start date. Hopefully very little. He's off next week. Leave year starts mid September.

27.5 days allowance, and I have 17.5 to take,

I shall take a few days at the end of the school summer holidays, and October half term.

That leaves me 9 or 10 to take at Christmas. 😊

Not a criticism as it's absolutely yours to choose but I guess this is why employees get twitchy - if half the team are basically holding out to book off most of the same month at the end of the year so there's no wiggle room.

Breaking up Dec 8th for Xmas does sound decadent tho 💕💕💕

mrsbyers · 31/07/2023 20:01

Having a week off now , a week in august and a week in sept , my holiday year refreshes 1st sept and currently I have 5 days to carry forward and 21 legacy days from covid times as I had a stroke and was unable to work for a chunk of it so 26 days and another 25 coming in Sept plus a privilege day.

Working from home and flexi has made a massive difference to my leave as no longer have to take half / full days for deliveries and appointment

rorotheo · 31/07/2023 20:02

We can’t carry over, I get 26 like you OP. I only have 10 days left to book but all of it yet to take!

icanflytoday · 31/07/2023 20:04

Calendar year holidays. 17 left to take after this week. Have 35 in total (25 but I buy 10 extra). By the end of the kids summer holidays I'll have 12 left (taking 5 the last week of August.)

BlueKaftan · 31/07/2023 20:07

Seriously? I’ve never known a country so full of holiday takers. Why?

Verystressedsenmum · 31/07/2023 20:08

I get a pitiful 20 days plus 8 bank hols .
I’ve 2 long weekends in august that leaves me with 6 days to last me till February . It’s rubbish and not enough I’ve got to wait till I’ve been in the company 10 years before I get any more entitlement.

Mylefttoe · 31/07/2023 20:09

30 to take. Started the year with 32 plus BH.

I am about to take most of Aug, but have a project to get off my desk before I stop so can't confirm exactly when I will finish.

Starlightstarbright2 · 31/07/2023 20:10

I have 119 hours . I work 32 hours a week . Needs holiday for closure over Christmas. Have a week in September .

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 31/07/2023 20:12

Our year runs march-feb.
I started the year with 31 days I have taken 11 I have 15 planned and I have 5 that I haven't decided on yet.

LlynTegid · 31/07/2023 20:12

I am allowed to carry over five days and usually do for a holiday in February or March, unless something cropped up at short notice.

MintJulia · 31/07/2023 20:16

@SleepingStandingUp One of the joys of my job. Tiny team, and holidays need to be booked around our sector's conference season.

Always a challenge to fit them in 😊

Doggymummar · 31/07/2023 20:16

I've not used any yet or booked any. I have 7 weeks I will try to have all of December and first two weeks of Jan if I can carry it over

Why do people take holidays?

Oblomov23 · 31/07/2023 20:24

I have 1 day left till end of Dec! This is very very unusual for me. Normally I save 2.

Last year I booked all days, based on similar article - how to get 47 days holiday for 19 booked- days
Plus it was my 50th so I've had days off for that, and my friends 50th, plus Alvor Portugal and Dh and Me to Benidorm.

I'm going to book 2024 based on similar article.

What an odd question. Why not? Paid time off to spend with family, friends, or just doing what you want. Why wouldn't you take holiday?

GreyhoundGardens · 31/07/2023 20:29

I had 23.5 days at start of year.

I have taken 13.5 days, with another 8 booked (including Christmas).

I have 3 left to book.

I work 3 days a week, so have a week left basically.

FT employees usually get nagged at my place of work, if they haven't taken/booked 20 days by the middle of the year. That's to ensure everyone takes their minimum holiday entitlement for the year.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 31/07/2023 20:35

Just changed jobs - so technically non. But I am owed all my annual leave to date from my previous job. Could never book it, and was looking at basically taking all of December as annual leave. They aren’t exactly happy they now owe me £££ for outstanding holiday.

Seriously? I’ve never known a country so full of holiday takers. Why?

Well everyone (employed) has to have 28 so that's one reason to start...

WithManyTot · 31/07/2023 20:37

24 Days per year, Year runs 1st Aug to 1st Aug,
8 day left to take in the next 4 hours

WasJuliaRight · 31/07/2023 20:37

Apr - Mar
30 days + 8 bank holidays, although I think it’s more BH this year.

taken 13 days, 5 days booked for November so I’ve got whatever bank holidays that are left, 12 days leave + 3 bank holiday days from previous years + 2 days worth of flexitime built up. So 17 days to take. I’ll book a week off before November.

Yetanothernewname101 · 31/07/2023 20:40

Ours runs January to December and we get 39 days. We aren't allowed to carry any over, and 5 or so are mandatory Christmas closure.
By the end of July we have to have 32 of the days booked, and the whole lot booked by the end of September.

Why take holidays instead of trotting into work 5 days a week every week?

tough one.
