One Chin Hair?

FryTheEggs · 30/07/2023 19:45

Why does this happen? I am 38 and every now and again I will suddenly get one long coarse hair on my chin?

Presumably something hormonal - but what? Perimenopause?

Is late thirties not a bit young to be growing a whisker?!

OP posts:
AnnaNims · 30/07/2023 22:49

I have had one under-chin hair since my early twenties.

It used to be black and I used my lumea on it. It disappeared for a couple of years but has now returned as a white one. I admit I quite enjoy its reappearance and it growing just long enough to be tweezed out. In work Teams meetings, I might look as though I’m thoughtfully pondering the discussion, but in reality, I’m stroking my chin for that hair 😬

Livelovebehappy · 30/07/2023 22:54

There’s nothing more satisfying than trying for an hour to tweeze that hair out, and then to finally get the bugger…..

Twittens · 30/07/2023 22:56

Mine is a cheek hair… not there one day… generally 12mm long the next day… yes I do measure it when it appears… because I thought I was imagining it being so long.. white and just like a cats whisker!!

I just have two now five years post menopause. One on each side - one black, one white. I had chemo and lost every hair on my body. Those buggers were the first to grow back as strong as before!

That's just not fair

Tilllly · 30/07/2023 23:03

I had two on my nipple! Stout black ones
Post breast cancer radiotherapy, no hairs
Seemed quite a high price to pay...

Epilator is great for chin hair - mine are pathetic and wispy now

But... I get random 3 foot long, white eyebrow hairs. Just appear from nowhere
Sneaky bastards

mrsmacmc · 30/07/2023 23:03

OP wait until you develop the strong pincer fingers to pluck it (and others who will probably join it 🤦‍♀️) then you'll have reached peak Grumpy Old Lady club member status 😩

AbsoIutelyLovely · 30/07/2023 23:04

Is this a stealth boast OP? I have a beard!

Agapornis · 30/07/2023 23:16

I'm a couple of years younger than you, but number 1 popped up in my 20s, now I have about 3 on my chin... but 1 or 2 further down my neck have made an appearance Shock plus some tache hairs with black hair follicles. I look forward to becoming a werewolf in my 80s.

I own tweezers because my eyebrows would join my hairline otherwise.

You're lucky it's only 1. I am early 30's and have been plucking hairs from my chin since i was mid - late 20's. No PCOS.

same! I find it satisfying

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 30/07/2023 23:27

Remembering a hilarious MN post on this topic some years ago along the lines of 'Go to bed with a smooth chin. In the morning? Gandalf'.

I second PPs. Tweezers will become your best friend.

Batshit1 · 30/07/2023 23:42

@Twittens i used to work as a vet nurse and one day at lunch a colleague said to me ‘you’ve got a cat hair on your face’ and tried to pick it off imagine all out mortification when it turned out it was my own hair growing there.. I was only 21!

Sceptre86 · 30/07/2023 23:48

Mine started appearing after I turned 30. If you've only got the 1 at 38 I'd say you are doing alright.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 31/07/2023 02:25

I'm finding this absolutely baffling, I'm 38 and never had one. (I have severe disabilities instead which is happily swap for chin hair) I'm still confused why I haven't had this yet though.

It's going to happen suddenly isn't it? A very long one that's only noticed once it's long enough to receive signals?

Yeaaaaaayeaxx · 31/07/2023 03:53

I'm 31 and I get:

2 on my chin
1 on my neck
1 on my cheek
1 on my boob

My neck and boob one has been growing since I was late teens but the the others have been last couple years 😂 I keep tweezers in my car as I always seem to notice them when I'm out 😂

My mum used to do this for me in my early 20s, she would spot them and say "ooh let me get that!" 😆 Ahhh, I miss her!

whumpthereitis · 31/07/2023 07:45

My husband gets these on his eyebrows. Sometimes he lets me pluck them and it’s glorious.

I had one that appeared when I started taking the pill in my 20s, but it hasn’t been back since I stopped. I miss it a bit tbh, there was something very satisfying about spotting it and declaring war with my tweezers.

lastminutewednesday · 31/07/2023 07:52

You are lucky to have got to 38 and only have one mate!

loveandpoprockz · 31/07/2023 07:52

I have a random long blond hair that appears on my right upper arm. I pluck out and don’t see it again for another year.

lastminutewednesday · 31/07/2023 07:53

And yes you need tweezers. One set in the bathroom and one in the car which is the best light to see them in!

Chachatrex · 31/07/2023 07:55

Gah I have one of these - bottom right of chin underneath. Feel around for it every day and one day it’s not there and the next, huge! I’m almost 45

deltablue · 31/07/2023 07:57

Laser is the best way to slow them in their tracks, but even that you'll have to top up - I'm getting a lot of breakouts on my chin as well because they tend to ingrow and then irritate the skin. Tweezers are also your best friend

whoknows1230 · 31/07/2023 08:03

Oh wow, I nearly wrote an identical post last week. I’ve got to 40 and have suddenly developed a single chin hair. Three times it’s popped out in exactly the same place now, most recently at work where I think I spent the best part of five hours stroking it/trying to pluck it out with my nails while worrying that somebody would spot it in the meantime.
I definitely am going to keep a spare pair of tweezers in my work bag now!

professionalnomad · 31/07/2023 08:22

Beard plucking is my new norm after teethbrushing. I'm 40

Tomeeornottomee · 31/07/2023 08:47

I have one bastard that appears out of nowhere in the same place on my neck at least twice a month...and another behind my knee. And despite checking for them regularly, when they appear they're always REALLY LONG.

Leapintothelightning · 31/07/2023 14:18

Oh how I wish I only had one!
