One Chin Hair?

FryTheEggs · 30/07/2023 19:45

Why does this happen? I am 38 and every now and again I will suddenly get one long coarse hair on my chin?

Presumably something hormonal - but what? Perimenopause?

Is late thirties not a bit young to be growing a whisker?!

I just have two now five years post menopause. One on each side - one black, one white. I had chemo and lost every hair on my body. Those buggers were the first to grow back as strong as before!

Amispringy · 30/07/2023 20:11

They're like mice. There's never just one Smile

Oceanus · 30/07/2023 20:18

Oh honey, I'm sorry you've reached that point. I'm also really sorry to tell you they never travel alone. The first one arrives to scope out the land and then calls the family and the friends to join. It'll be a party soon, with squatters so there's nothing to be done but kill them.

Usernameunknownfornow · 30/07/2023 20:24

Face and neck threading is cheaper and also removes the hairs from route unlike waxing, it will be painful but worth it, I go every 4 weeks and I'm in my mid 20s.

It made the skin on my neck/under the chin very coarse, red and tender after a couple of years, because it is more traumatic than waxing. And as they spread, it takes longer and longer...waxing is quick, you have the warmth, the tug then a few seconds later, the tingle and it's almost done.

It's very easy with the deep seated, tough hairs to end up actually bleeding with threading, especially if you've mistimed it by about a millimetre.

Been getting threading/waxing done for over 20 years now. Waxing is so much gentler on the skin and far, far less painful, especially if you've got to go when you're due on.

FryTheEggs · 30/07/2023 20:37

So apart from tweezing as the hair (and future friends) arrive, the options are threading or waxing?

Both of those sound painful to me! I have never waxed anything. Just shaved legs and under my arms.

I feel daunted!

Oh would lasering the chin area be a painless way to deal with it long term?

Mumsgirls · 30/07/2023 20:38

I am 66 just had one for about 20 years, never any others lol. Just tweezer when I can get hold of it

NoraLuka · 30/07/2023 20:40

I’m early 40s and have one on my neck. It’s a sneaky bastard, doesn’t appear for weeks so I never know when to look out for it, then poof! There it is!

embryoniclove · 30/07/2023 20:40

No PCOS here but definitely hormonal as when I came off the pill I got one which grows overnight and comes, without fail, around the time of period. Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's white. I'm 36 and have had it for about 7 years.

Friend gets one on her cheek.

Redpriestandmozart · 30/07/2023 20:41

ONE? you are very lucky!

gamerchick · 30/07/2023 20:42

I got my first one chin hair at 16.

I have double figures now. Count your blessings and get the tweezers out.

dumpling123 · 30/07/2023 20:46

I'm in a constant battle with chin hair. Can feel them under the skin before they pop. Enjoy only one!

Mummy08m · 30/07/2023 20:48

Op, I strongly, strongly recommend an IPL machine when you start growing more. They really do work and it's painless and once you've used it a few times you can go months between uses.

Like pp, I feel you ought to count your blessings having only one chin hair! Also you've reached late 30s without owning a pair of tweezers??! A charmed life.

I've had significant facial hair since puberty and no PCOS that I'm aware of, just a hairy hairy woman. I'd love to blame my genes, I have a hairy dad, but my mum is hairless and never even shaves her legs - nature is cruel.

missingeu · 30/07/2023 20:48

It'll soon have friends, invest in tweezers (several pairs) and a magnifying mirror..

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 30/07/2023 20:49

My rando single hairs just appear sporadically. The gems I have are one on Nose - from childhood on, boob- from pregnancy on, left cheek- from 40 on. Big black fencing wire hair pops up from nothing to a cm long over night. I have tweezers everywhere now. No one tells you when you are over 40 you will start keeping tweezers in more than just the bathroom for instantaneous bloody random facial hair.

Laser can make latent hair come out. So it might work but then again it might not and might actually be worse over time.
I lasered the Poirot 'stache but now I've had to move on to electrolys (it lasted about 4 or 5 years) because of hormonal changes. What was lasered came back (and some!). I also have hair everywhere else on the face now (lucky me) with thick hair under the chin, on the neck, cheeks ocasionally, along the jaw... Really, everywhere!
Given your age, I would consider electrolysis for at least the thick ones and then take it from there. If your skin does well with electrolysis it would be better than laser.

FryTheEggs · 30/07/2023 20:54

But hang on what is everyone else tweezing? Do most people tweeze their eyebrows?

I thought a lot of folks had stopped tweezing and waxing was the most popular for brows?

I don't tweeze anything, my eyebrows are just kinda there hanging out Grin I like the shape as they do have a nice arch but they're definitely not dark enough so I did get them tinted once. It washed out after a couple of showers and I felt ripped off tbh.

Then I forgot about my eyebrows again. Which I feel is a mistake because sophisticated eyebrows can really frame your face, I just dunno what to do with them.

Just one on my chin too. Haven’t seen it for a while but I know it will pop up at any moment suddenly several inches long

Lollygaggle · 30/07/2023 20:58

I cannot recommend the mirror in your car ,for spotting those errant little hairs, enough.
Whenever I go somewhere before I get out I check and there's rarely a time when a little judicious plucking doesn't need doing.
Ironically I had a large ,dark neck hair that appeared in my 30s , which has gone , replaced by its Viking beard buddies.

I've waxed , epilated , had threading but with these you have to wait for hair to get long enough. Tweezering means as soon as you see it , it's gone.

Same! Grew an extra while pregnant

greenacrylicpaint · 30/07/2023 21:01

just wait for that hair to turn white and bristly...
which is an inch long and you discover because you got food stuck to it when having lunch with your boss Blush

Yusay · 30/07/2023 21:01

I’ve spent £1000 on electrolysis and I still have a hundred or so hairs left on my chin/neck. If you have only one chin hair, be very grateful.

Mayhem3 · 30/07/2023 21:04

I can’t believe you don’t tweeze your eyebrows!
I’m very jealous as I can’t not tweeze mine, although they are very dark brown almost black in colour.

I have these random hairs on my neck.

I usually only notice them in the car (must be better lighting) so I bought a cheap pair of tweezers that I keep in the car now.
