The Mumsnet passive aggressive comment thread 😂

RootbeerLolly · 30/07/2023 16:16

I was driving through a small cotswold village yesterday and there were a number of roadsigns that really reminded me of mumsnet. 😂

First there were several 30mph signs. A few hundred feet along was another sign saying 'It's still 30'. Next was 'Remember?' and then my favourite....'Had you forgotten?'

I've no issue as the fact they stayed in my memory likely means they better achieved their purpose than if they just went unnoticed, but the 'Had you forgotten?' really reminded me of the mumsnet classic 'Did you mean to be so rude?' 😂😂😂

I thought it'd be funny to have a thread to capture these mumsnetisms. The other common one I always see is 'doesn't sound like you like her very much' which I just encountered five mins ago on the thread where the OP is concerned her obese friend may not cope with the physical aspects of the job she's putting her forward for.

Hit me up with your favourites or show me your passive aggressive anger at my daring to mock this established mumsnet institution!

"Did ye aye?" (I'm not Scottish but really quite like that one though I think it's sarky rather than PA.)

"Sorry I couldn't understand your post because you didn't use paragraphs". Yes you did, dickhead, just salivating at being able to criticise OP's formatting.

Also "odd thread" or "weird comment" or just "weird/odd". When the previous poster has explained exactly why they did or said what they did but the responding poster adamantly does not want to acknowledge someone's opinion is different. E.g. original poster declares Christmas is over on Boxing Day, and no one should be doing Christmas stuff after 25th. Responding poster explains always does a Christmas visit to extended family at other end of country between Christmas and New year as has to work right up to Christmas eve so no chance before. Reply: "So odd. It's not Christmas any more so it can't be a Christmas visit".

When someone has made some easily decipherable, obviously unintentional typos in an easy to comprehend post and some smugger comes along to stick the boot in. They always have to a variant of "I couldn't read this; I couldn't understand what OP was on about- such terrible english". Even though the rest of the thread seems to have got the gist.

Or worse yet, uses an Americanism! I saw one once where people were pretending they didn’t understand what a “garbage truck” is.

supersop60 · 30/07/2023 18:08

Grow up.

MerinoCashmere · 30/07/2023 18:08

Did you ever think the sign-writers might be having a bad day?

daisychain01 · 30/07/2023 18:10

adept insertion of a PA emoticon (it must be one of the original MN ones) eg:

OP not back on their thread, I see Confused [drums fingers on desk]

head-tilt

get over yourself Hmm

rileynexttime · 30/07/2023 18:11

You sound overly invested in the goings on in this village.
Were the speed signs there before you married dh?
😂😂

Doingtheboxerbeat · 30/07/2023 18:12

"How old are you?You all sound so childish"
"Your reading comprehension is shit"
"Do better"
"You sound jealous"
"Why do you care so much?"

isthismylifenow · 30/07/2023 18:12

Are you 12?

PinkShoelacesAndAPolkaDotVest · 30/07/2023 18:15

Are you hard of reading?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 30/07/2023 18:17

@honeylulu did ye aye? Is my absolute favourite snarky comeback - just sums up everything we are all thinking without having to directly say it.

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 30/07/2023 18:17

Here's my first biscuit

hecameoutroaring · 30/07/2023 18:19

"If you don't live together, he's your boyfriend, not your partner."

Also during Covid, a lot of wedding threads were so passive aggressive at times. If anyone expressed disappointment at having to limit numbers to 15 or 30, there were so many snide comments along the lines of, "This will distinguish between those who actually want to be married and those who just want a party/ to be a princess for a day."

Yes. I fucking detest this one. Every time someone posts it, I always think 'what a smug twat'.

My favourite version of this is the “What did you agree when you discussed how being a SAHM would work?” when the poor OP is obviously married to an absolute twat who is financially controlling her and is only just realising this herself. If they had the sort of relationship where they’d hashed all this out beforehand she wouldn’t be posting on Mumsnet now!

the other one that winds me up is “we can’t answer until you explain xyz” particularly when xyz is an easily overlooked detail that OP has been back and mentioned if only posters had bothered to read the OP’s second post.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 30/07/2023 18:28

Don’t suppose anyone fancies explaining why the comments are passive aggressive? Especially the “doesn’t sound like you like her much” one? If someone dislikes a person and makes it obvious is it not ok to say that?

Lwrenagain · 30/07/2023 18:29

"My 12 year old DC is really hard work over summer hols"

I'm sorry but frankly you put yourself in this situation by not aborting them. Really you've nobody else to blame for this.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 30/07/2023 18:30

@Lwrenagain is that a passive aggressive comment? It seems outright aggressive?

Lwrenagain · 30/07/2023 18:32

True. I just wanted to join in 😂

Purplependant222 · 30/07/2023 18:35

One day your little boy will grow up and you'll be the other grandparent. How do you want to be treated.

When OP has done a whole post on how MIL oversteps boundaries, is rude, entitled and generally has been an awful person.

Ghosttofu99 · 30/07/2023 18:36

JustKeepSlimming · 30/07/2023 16:21

"What treatment are you getting for your anxiety" when the OP hasn't mentioned anxiety, but has just said that they're worried about something.

This is exactly what I was going to say. This happens every other thread

dontjudgemeagain · 30/07/2023 18:40

"OP, you do realise insert something the OP clearly doesn't realise, or they wouldn't have posted."

Or on a thread about a child's behaviour - "I wouldn't have let it get to that point". HELPFUL.

takealettermsjones · 30/07/2023 18:44

Sorry you're having trouble with reading comprehension.

Again for the hard of thinking.

eggandonion · 30/07/2023 18:44

There's always someone who has to mention that their mother is dead.

ScarlettBeauregarde · 30/07/2023 18:45

Anothernamechange3 · 30/07/2023 16:18

‘And what did they say when you talked to them about it?’ (Translation: I know you haven’t talked to them about it but this is a passive aggressive way of saying you should have before starting a thread about it).

Absolutely hate this one. The best I saw was the poster talking about the woman who stole her gnome from her front garden. A poster came back with ‘and what did she say when you banged on the window?’ which was so ridiculous to begin with, but even more funny was that in their haste to post they’d missed OP saying they’d actually gone right out and confronted the woman in person. Cue embarrassed backtracking. So stupid.

FKATondelayo · 30/07/2023 18:47

You got some good advice on your previous threads OP.
