Settle an argument at home.

YANBU it doesn't matter which tinned tomatoes you buy they all taste the same and the trick is to cook them properly and drain off the watery stuff

YABU premium brands are so much better And have more pulp

You get what you pay for with tinned tomatoes
Mutti are lovely.

TwelfthGiraffe · 29/07/2023 22:09

I agree with the post above - you pretty much get what you pay for.

Wallabyone · 29/07/2023 22:09

Premium brands are better-Mutti is also my favourite!

DustyMaiden · 29/07/2023 22:10

I find cheaper ones taste metallic.

Twothousandandjustonemore · 29/07/2023 22:10

Add a bit of sugar into cheap tomatoes and it improves the taste by taking the bitterness out. If you slow simmer it gives the dish more depth anyway so yes, cheap tomatoes are fine.

Definitely this. The cheap ones are nowhere near as good and usually full of big chunks of skin which is like chewing on plastic.

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 29/07/2023 22:11

I've put yanbu, but upon reflection, I've never bought an expensive brand.

I do use tinned toms a fair bit, and I always like my cooking lol.

Maybe I will have to try this Mutti you speak of.

Work2live · 29/07/2023 22:11

I came on specifically to mention Mutti, regardless of the content of the thread.

I see others already got there before me. As you were.

Mistymist · 29/07/2023 22:13

Mutti!

Takacupokindnessyet · 29/07/2023 22:13

Cheaper tins are more like to be not quite ripe, have some skin still on and a watery juice, so you end up needing to use more tins.

ThePoshUns · 29/07/2023 22:14

Mutti or Lidl 'polpi'

SausageinaBun · 29/07/2023 22:15

I like Cirio - their chopped tomatoes are really thick, nothing to drain off.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/07/2023 22:15

I've never bought expensive tinned tomatoes. I mostly get Ocado own brand Italian chopped tomatoes, currently priced at 60p for 400g and rated 4.5 stars out of 5, which is high for that site. I find them absolutely fine, and have never in fact had any issues with Sainsbury's, Tesco or Waitrose equivalents in the past.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/07/2023 22:17

I see Mutti are more than double the price of own brand! Wow. They'd have to be out of this world for me to spend that much on them.

JudgeRinderonTinder · 29/07/2023 22:17

branded are better but cheap ones are generally fine. You’re going to add other herbs/spices and bits to the meal anyway and if you’re on a budget it’s not worth the extra you just make the best of your ingredients.

RedRobyn2021 · 29/07/2023 22:24

I used to think they were all the same but they definitely aren't, I buy the cheap ones btw

MyDogIsADude · 29/07/2023 22:25

We use Mr Organic and Mutti. The cheap ones are horrible.

Jewelanemone · 29/07/2023 22:26

They all get chucked into something Bolognese-y or chilli-ish so it doesn't matter. Cheaper the better.

I agree, much better than Mutti.

morelippy · 29/07/2023 22:27

I used mutti for the first time today, thanks to MN

I'm so unimpressed

NeedMoMoney · 29/07/2023 22:28

What a wierd thread.. to try and advertise this mutti brand...

PragmaticWench · 29/07/2023 22:31

Definitely Mutti. Also buy plum tomatoes and mash them up rather than buying chopped; an Italian born cook told me the plum tomatoes are the ripest at point of being tinned and so have the best flavour.

Howtohideasausage · 29/07/2023 22:34

I use the 50p Asda own. Seem fine to me. Mind you, I buy Heinz beans.

SavvyMaria · 29/07/2023 22:38

Cirio are better than Mutti IMO.

Cheap plum tomatoes are better than chopped.

UsingChangeofName · 29/07/2023 22:39

I only ever buy 'basic' tinned tomatoes.
Potentially, if you did blind taste test, I presume there must be a difference but cost is a big factor for most people (if not most MNers).
A quick google suggests they are £1.75 at Tesco against 30p for the basic ones.

I can't begin to believe they are that much better.

Even more so, when I usually cook with them and they are only one ingredient in whatever it is I am cooking.
