Just that really.

I converted to Catholicism but I think that bit's a bit harsh.

bilbodog · 29/07/2023 16:51

Ive no time for any religion - because most of them seem to be intollerant of things like this. Just leave …

Newusernameaug · 29/07/2023 16:53

That religions are created by men to hold power over other men and women and are a load of made up BS

Hyposensitive · 29/07/2023 16:59

I think it's a totally Normal human behaviour that doesn't need demonising or pathologising. But I am also not a catholic, and never could be

Nagado · 29/07/2023 17:01

I’m not a big fan of organised religion. Lots of arbitrary rules made up by the men running them, mostly to keep their members in order and the funds coming in.

I don’t think you have to go and sit in a particular place each week if you want to have a relationship with God. Just do a bit of praying, try to help people when you can and don’t be a dick. I’m pretty sure that was the general message.

NeverHadANickname · 29/07/2023 17:03

I would wonder what the point of the rule was. I don't know which Bible passage that says it so I am ignorant on that front but surely masturbation should be allowed? It doesn't involve anyone else, you are not denying a pregnancy.

AnorLondo · 29/07/2023 17:03

Any religion that's obsessed with people's sex lives to that degree is bullshit.

cocoloco117 · 29/07/2023 17:06

I thought Catholicism was all ‘do what you like just confess and it’s all good’ so just have a wank and then say a few Hail Marys.

Catusrusty · 29/07/2023 17:07

Organised religion is generally just a tool to control the masses.

People buy into it because it gives them a sense that they are not finite. Life is utterly precarious and arbitrary, we could all suddenly shuffle off this mortal coil for a myriad of reasons. I think many people simply can't face that.

Also it usually penalises and demonises women more and that is supported by patriarchy.

porridgeisbae · 29/07/2023 17:11

I thought Catholicism was all ‘do what you like just confess and it’s all good’ so just have a wank and then say a few Hail Marys.

No unfortunately. That's called the sin of presumption and is a sin in itself, and also renders your confession null and void.

I would wonder what the point of the rule was. I don't know which Bible passage that says it so I am ignorant on that front but surely masturbation should be allowed? It doesn't involve anyone else, you are not denying a pregnancy.

There's a Matt Fradd vid that goes into it

Is Masturbation A Sin?

Is there biblical evidence that masturbation is wrong? Matt takes a deep dive into Genesis 38 to better understand the sin of Onan, and what this teaches us ...

A love life with yourself? Do you mean masturbating? Can we not just use grown up words?

I thought men shouldn't masturbate because it spills the seed of life so is a waste? Hence why sex only to make a baby so no contraception.

I'm not sure it's explicitly stated that women shouldn't do it unless it's very strict?

Why have you chosen Catholicism?

I can't believe anyone chooses to convert to be RC. I'm thinking about removing myself from the institution.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 29/07/2023 17:18

None of their business.

HRTQueen · 29/07/2023 17:20

Most people adapt religion to suit their lives

I have more of an issue with religious leaders not wanting people to question their religion and preach fear

Butchyrestingface · 29/07/2023 17:23

I'm lapsed Catholic, having been raised in the faith. Maybe it's just the churches that I attended in the past, but I don't seem to recall any pulpit sermons warning the flock about the evils of a bit of how's your father with oneself. In other words, it might be written in the OT but nobody's paying much attention to that these days.

You seem to be taking this a bit more seriously than even the diehard Catholics I know. Are you newly baptised? Am wondering if this is just a temporary phase of zeal for a new devotee which will eventually die down into more or less bland indifference...

BarelyLiterate · 29/07/2023 17:26

That’s one of the many reasons why I’m an ex-Catholic. I remember at school an ancient crone of a nun telling a class full of 15 year olds with rampant hormones that ‘selfish sexual orgasm’ was a sin. Fuck that.

If masturbating is too ‘adult’ and not religious enough, we could call it ‘ringing satans doorbell’.

User63847484848 · 29/07/2023 17:28

I was taught that it was because you were likely I Sheba lustful thoughts whilst doing it and it was that which was the sin. This was in the evangelical, Christian fundamentalist type church. I was very earnestly into it as a teen and remember trying so hard to resist the temptation and feeling soooo guilty about doing it. I think it’s all bollocks now and feel sad at the guilt and issues around sex that it all left me with!

however, if you connect with Catholicism/God in general then I think you’ll find a whole spectrum of people from the liberal to the conservative and many who maintain their faith without denouncing masturbation, sex outside marriage, homosexuality etc. it is all open to interpretation.

I'm an atheist, but I think you just converted me to Catholicism 🤣

Ferona · 29/07/2023 17:37

A love live with yourself? 😂

You can't decide to follow a religion with stupid rules then complain that the rules are stupid.

A love life with yourself? Do you mean masturbating? Can we not just use grown up words?

@SleepingStandingUp I've actually had a thread deleted in the past for having that in the title.

The theory is it's not God's design for sex. It turns what's supposed to be an act of giving to another into a selfish act. https://www.catholic.com/qa/why-masturbation-is-wrong

Why have you chosen Catholicism?

It was kind of over a bloke in a tangential way (he doesn't go to that church or anything, it was just a desire to feel spiritually close to an ex from long ago.) But I don't have a problem with any of it except the teachings on sex.

Most people adapt religion to suit their lives

If they are cheating in any way, unless it's really minor, they'll go to hell. You either believe in it all or you don't IMHO.

I don't seem to recall any pulpit sermons warning the flock about the evils of a bit of how's your father with oneself.

Of course that wouldn't tend to be something that they'd tend to do a public sermon on with kids present etc, but it's part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which outlines what we believe.

You seem to be taking this a bit more seriously than even the diehard Catholics I know. Are you newly baptised? Am wondering if this is just a temporary phase of zeal for a new devotee which will eventually die down into more or less bland indifference...

Yep, I was baptised at Easter, but had a lot of instruction beforehand. Maybe I'll find a way around it but I still see deliberately not sticking to part of it, as cheating right now.

remember at school an ancient crone of a nun telling a class full of 15 year olds with rampant hormones that ‘selfish sexual orgasm’ was a sin. Fuck that.

@BarelyLiterate Yes I mean, I'm a middle aged woman, but I can only imagine what it's like for teenagers. I've known others who left due to it at that age.

Why Is Masturbation Wrong?

The Catholic Church teaches that masturbation is always gravely wrong, and therefore constitutes a mortal sin. Click here to read more about this teaching.

There's a Matt Fradd vid that goes into it

Matt Fradd thinks homosexuality is a disorder so he can fuck himself.

I mean he can't because he thinks masturbation is wrong too. It seems like it might do him some good though.

porridgeisbae · 29/07/2023 17:57

Matt Fradd thinks homosexuality is a disorder so he can fuck himself.

Unfortunately it's church teaching that it's a sin. And I was bi before.

You converted to feel close (spiritually) to a long ago ex?

But now you're convinced if you don't follow each rule to the letter you'll go to hell?

That all sounds a bit unusual.

porridgeisbae · 29/07/2023 17:59

You can't decide to follow a religion with stupid rules then complain that the rules are stupid.

I thought I could handle it. Grin

Fair enough re title, I thought it was like when people asterisk words like shit and bloody.

I guess this is the thing about faith. If you really believe everything you've been taught is true and that hell is real etc, then it almost doesn't matter why. God said don't touch it. Don't touch it 😝
