To think there should be a ULEZ concessions scheme?

For those on very low incomes affected by this ?
Either a reduced rate or a certain number of ‘free’ trips per UC assessment period or similar?

Totally agree.

High value cars should pay more, money goes into a pot to help lower earners

FloweryName · 29/07/2023 11:18

YANBU in theory but so many people would reasonably deserve the concessions that it would either become more unfair than it already is or it would make the entire extension even more pointless.

declutteringAgain · 29/07/2023 11:24

It’s really going to affect so many people with very low incomes , and will cancel out the help they get from things like FSM, free prescriptions etc if they have to pay £12.50 each day they use their car or older people perhaps with medical appointments. So many scenarios and I really think some kind of scheme is needed to protect the lowest income people / families

How would it work? Increase prices for others? Again like everything those who have no financial issues won't be affected, those who just miss out on UC will be hit hardest.

tfresh · 29/07/2023 11:26

This is why schemes like this never get anywhere. There is an endless list of concessions.

I'm quite sure people on UC and pensioners will be effected by climate change, so they have to contribute too.

I do t see why others should pay more - just like with free school meals those who don’t get them don’t pay more to cover the costs for the free ones?

There always has to be a cut off point for things and someone will always just miss out

OP where do you think the money comes from to pay for free school meals? Thats the tax payer. And I think the tax payer has had enough of paying endless amounts of money for UC claimants and pensioners

declutteringAgain · 29/07/2023 11:31

Even if they had 1 or 2 ‘free’ days each week - this would make a difference . It could be linked to UC much like free dental treatment is or similar - that of you have under a certain amount earnings in an assessment period you qualify for the free trips ?

These groups are the poorest and most vulnerable in society. The ulez scheme will affect them hugely what they get from FsM etc will just be taken back by ulez making them no better off or worse off ? It can’t a one size fits all ?

Apparently 9/10 cars are ulez compliant anyway so this wouldn’t be something that would need to be accessed by that many at all but would hugely help those who did need it ?

Yes. This

Sigmama · 29/07/2023 11:33

That’s reassuring but there still will be some - so a concessions scheme wouldn’t actually be a massive cost so really would be manageable and beneficial to some who really need it

UPEZ isn’t about climate change. It’s about improving air quality. Although I’ll concede that even Khan seems confused on this point.

Oliotya · 29/07/2023 11:37

The point of ULEZ is to get older cars off the roads and clean up the air. Concessions would make the scheme pointless. No, it's not really fair, but then neither is children dying because of poor air quality.

Boomboom22 · 29/07/2023 11:38

So some people should get everything free while what full time workers pay for it all? Not really equality driven is it.

The “poorest and most vulnerable in society” don’t own private motor vehicles. If you can afford to own and run a car you are not, by any definition of the word, “poor”.

There potentially will be parents who have to think twice about accessing care for their child - imagine if you’ve got nothing in your account , it’s 3 weeks till next UC pay date and your child needs to go to a and e one night ? So it will affect children ? Even one ‘free’ trip per week could be used for emergencies?

OP posts:
Boomboom22 · 29/07/2023 11:39

Also don't those on uc have an excellent scrappage scheme that everyone else doesn't? And if you are very poor you can't afford a car in the first place.

Boomboom22 · 29/07/2023 11:40

If your child needs a and e call am ambulance. That's a ridiculous reason to suggest people in poverty spend the hundreds a month it costs to run a car.

That’s simply not true - a lot of families on UC, FSm with pupil premium do have older cars - they use them to get to and from school and work - they work in low paid jobs

OP posts:
BlackberrySky · 29/07/2023 11:42

I think more community outreach needs to be done. Many people still seem to think they need to buy a brand new car if their current one is non-compliant, but many used vehicles are compliant. You can easily sell a non-compliant vehicle to someone who doesn't live in London. I sold my 15 year old diesel to a man who came from Somerset to pick it up.

Boomboom22 · 29/07/2023 11:42

On uc yes
On fsm no, you must earn less than 7400. Min wage is nearer 20k.

declutteringAgain · 29/07/2023 11:44

There needs to be something even a temporary period where there’s a concessions scheme

If they were that hard up, there's a good chance they wouldn't have petrol money either. As previous posters have pointed out, the majority of the poorest londoners don't have cars anyway.
I don't drive (don't live in london), so I would call a taxi, an ambulance, or ask a neighbor depending on the situation.

LlynTegid · 29/07/2023 11:48

You are compliant with a 17 year old petrol car. Public transport in London is far greater than anywhere else in the UK.

The ULEZ was first proposed when Mr Johnson was London Mayor, not exactly new.
