To think anyone who prefers The Office (US) to The Office is an idiot?

Just that, really. Can’t understand anyone who thinks it’s better than the original. It’s just Americanised, dragged out tosh compared to the original.

If you’re going to tell me I’m wrong, please do elaborate. I’m all ears.

I don't understand the RG hate. He's hated all over reddit. I think he's really funny 🤷‍♀️

I love Dwight and Angela together in the US office. Absolutely hilarious with moments of real sweetness.

His 'comedy' often disgusts me. He's sneery and punches down constantly in his work.

The US office was far better without his input and the episodes where he did appear felt different immediately.

His punch downs are funny because it's him punching down. A bit like Alan Partridge. It's not the put down it's him making the put down that makes me laugh. He's making out like he's better, maybe if you miss that then yes you wouldn't find him funny.

I think RG is clever and funny and probably a decent bloke, but I can't watch him on screen, he is so slimey and sneery.

@Titicacacandle thanks for the patronising response. 😄 I do understand how comedy works and I still think he's hateful.

Sorry I thought you didn't get it 😂

I really like them both, but feel like totally different shows. I watched American with DS who was 12 at the time and it was good show to watch with him. We did try and watch UK one but the nuance was totally lost on him and definitely a lot more grown up than the US one (which obvs didn't bother me).

I loved Angela and Dwight too. Such a brilliant couple.

He is hated because he pokes fun at sacred cows.
His work is very clever but can be quite cynical.
Not always though, Afterlife really wasn't.

JaneJeffer · 30/07/2023 13:23

US is the best. UK version is unwatchable.

I like the podcasts with Stephen and Karl. Does anyone know what actually split RG off from Stephen M?

sweatervest · 30/07/2023 13:42

I still laugh loudly at the UK one but I thought the American one disappeared up its arse and Pam really grated. Also the American one went on for farrrrrrrrrr to long. Says me. Commissioning editor for bugger all.

Popworld · 30/07/2023 13:47

Gervais is a genius and I think many of his shows will be deemed classics .

But I think when the original office came out I was too you to get into it.

Extras was brilliant, afterlife was brilliant.

RG doesn’t need to be liked or to shock people I think that’s the secret to his success

he is very much the British version of Larry David

they both write characters that are not particularly likeable but that we can in some way relate to and why do we need to like or loath a character to want to watch them

he also isn’t pulled into the self importance, self pitting navel gazing of the celeb world which is refreshing

I have liked some of his films and his stand up is funny but prefer The Office, Afterlife and especially Extras

Yes. I fell out of love with the Pam character because I got the sense that the actress playing her was a bit of a pill. It started to give me Acorn Antiques vibes - the pretentious luvvy who played Mrs Overall.

She was never seen again, was she?
