To think anyone who prefers The Office (US) to The Office is an idiot?

Just that, really. Can’t understand anyone who thinks it’s better than the original. It’s just Americanised, dragged out tosh compared to the original.

If you’re going to tell me I’m wrong, please do elaborate. I’m all ears.

If you think the US one is better than the British one then you've no sense of humour and you're not 'my people'

NerrSnerr · 29/07/2023 09:32

I prefer the American version. I'm also not sure why being 'Americanised' is seen as such an awful thing. There's lots of great things that have come from America. Lots of awful shit too but you could say that about almost all countries.

Or maybe a different sense of humour?

Life would be dull if we all liked exactly the same things.

GolgafrinchamB · 29/07/2023 09:34

I hated the original.

That was my working life at that point - having endured it for 40 hours a week, why the hell would I want to watch it on TV?

The sexism, racism, bullying, unbearable incompetence, latest management buzzwords… fun to mock is you aren’t living it.

Luckydip1 · 29/07/2023 09:40

Thank goodness being stuck in an office five days a week is now a thing of the past!

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 29/07/2023 09:46

Nooe, US is far far better. I did like the UK one though. It wasn't the same after Steve Carell left. I do love Mose, best character from the later series 😁 I just love the characters, they are so cleverly written. It's my comfort programme as is Parks and Recreation and the UK Ghosts. If I'm tired or a little off I put one of them on and they cheer me up. Not even bothered with US Ghosts, it sounds dire.

cushioncovers · 29/07/2023 09:47

Nellieinthebarn · 28/07/2023 21:46

I much prefer the UK version, but the US version of The Office is nowhere near as bad as the US version of Ghosts.

Can't even bring myself to watch the U.S version of this.

Happy to not be 'your people' from the sounds of it!

They’re very different shows. I like both.

This 🤷‍♀️

NeverThatSerious · 29/07/2023 09:52

I definitely prefer the US one, and normally I’m a firm believer in British humour > American humour. I just think it’s hilarious, Dwight is comedy gold.. besides I just cannot stand Ricky Gervais.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 29/07/2023 09:52

I can't cope people who think they are somehow superior because of what they watch on TV 😂 I I love all kinds of crap. I dont watch TV with the aim of feeling superior to others, that would be daft. I watch it to escape.

TheOutlaws · 29/07/2023 09:53

@pillsthrillsandbellyache

I didn’t get US Ghosts, I was hoping I’d love it. It doesn’t hit the mark.

BubziOwl · 29/07/2023 09:56

They both fulfil different roles for me. The office US is one of those inoffensive programs that I can just put on in the background that's quite comforting to watch. The U.K. one is a better TV programme imo but the cringe factor is too strong for it to be as easy a watch as the US one

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 29/07/2023 09:57

I don't think I'll bother @TheOutlaws . Is there any other full grown person here who still watches Horrible Histories? Still makes me laugh .

BubziOwl · 29/07/2023 09:57

@pillsthrillsandbellyache guilty! 🙋‍♀️

MissingGrandstand · 28/07/2023 22:28

I think they are so different to the point it's impossible to compare them.

U.K. version is brilliantly clever but every character is horrendously unlikeable, to the point it's difficult to watch. This was the whole point of the show, and why it wasn't ever supposed to last season after season.

US version is much more lighthearted, very easygoing comedy. Steve Carell is cringy but nowhere near as offensive as Ricky Gervais' Brent. He has redeeming likeable qualities that allowed them to keep going for multiple seasons.

Agree with this. I love them both, but they’re not really comparable.

TheOutlaws · 29/07/2023 10:01

@pillsthrillsandbellyache

I watch HH all the times because DS1 and DS2 love it. My knowledge of monarchs and historical events is now top tier! I like spotting the song parodies.

phoenixrosehere · 29/07/2023 10:03

I’ve watched both and found the British Office was pretty much the Ricky Gevaris show whereas the US office there were more personalities, storylines, and I found it more relatable for workplaces. It looked more like the office I worked in here than the British Office.

Nothing wrong with having a difference of opinion, BUT going as far as calling people idiots is beyond juvenile and rude especially over a tv show.

I prefer the American version. I'm also not sure why being 'Americanised' is seen as such an awful thing. There's lots of great things that have come from America. Lots of awful shit too but you could say that about almost all countries.

Neither do I nor do you hear Americans moaning about the UK even close to the same level in the States. They actually don’t factor much on the radar other than the lovely accents.

AncientBallerina · 29/07/2023 10:04

The UK one was of it’s time. I don’t think I could watch it now for that reason. It’s dark and incredibly well observed. We all know the David Brents of this world. I actually think I’d find it depressing to watch now because I think it’s a bit too good
I think the US one is a timeless comedy with hilarious characters. I don’t think I’ve seen the first series but they are all just so funny - Jim 😍 Dwight, Michael and I just love Stanley. The female characters (I think?) are stronger too than the UK one - Meredith, Pam, Phyllis (and her shenanigans with her husband 😳 ) Kelly.
Also love the understated performance of poor Toby. Why does no one like him?
Oh god and Gabe - that management consultant type are the villains these days.
And finally…Parkour!

IHeartGeneHunt · 29/07/2023 10:06

I can't abide Ricky Gervais so I've never watched the UK one.

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 29/07/2023 10:06

They're horses of a different colour. The original is genius and subtle and started a whole genre of comedy. The American version is a different beast but has some really great longer storylines and some excellent, laugh-out-loud writing (the "Smokey Robinson is Dead" cold open springs immediately to mind).

I used to be like you @Glorybetoallwomen and look down on people who liked the US version just based on clips. But then my husband persuaded me to give the whole series a go during lockdown and I will admit that I was wrong. It's brilliant. Liking that doesn't take away from the brilliance of the original.

crapactually · 29/07/2023 10:08

I think the thing I can't get past with Gervais is that I do think he is as vile as a lot of the characters he plays. They're a caricature of him as a person. Sneering and always punching down.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 29/07/2023 10:08

Yes! @BubziOwl and @TheOutlaws we may not be cool or highbrow but at least we are learning at the same time as watching 😂

FKATondelayo · 29/07/2023 10:10

They're two different shows.

The US Office is a brilliant depiction of how vulnerable the 'white collar' professional classes are in the US and how desperate they are to keep their jobs because of healthcare and lack of a social safety net. The episode where Pam holds off going to hospital while in labour because she doesn't want her maternity leave to kick in until the next day for example.

HolyShitDrJones · 29/07/2023 10:11

I haven’t watched the UK one as I don’t like RG.
I love the US Office and have watched it several times. I love Steve Carrell.
