Just that, really. Can’t understand anyone who thinks it’s better than the original. It’s just Americanised, dragged out tosh compared to the original.

If you’re going to tell me I’m wrong, please do elaborate. I’m all ears.

The UK one was utter genius. Anybody could just randomly flick onto the channel and be absoloutley certain they were watching a documentary set in a paper factory. It was as close to real as it would have been possible to get. Unknowns playing the characters. Real and unlikeable people. No slapstick. Raw. Well written. Ended as soon as it started. Its a classic.

The US version, there is something lost in the fact that you know you are watching a scripted show. That was the whole USP of UK Office. Its still great, and the storylines are good. But it delivers a totally different product.

My prized possession is a shrute farms t-shirt I wear to bed and think about Dwight Blush

I adore Dwight! Absolutey love him!

I even loved him when he killed Angela’s cat and put the body in the freezer. All in the name of it being a mercy killing…..

And I love the episode where Jim comes to work dressed up as Dwight and starts impersonating him 😂

I could talk about Dwight all night ❤️

I just love, love, love him. He’s easily one of the funniest TV characters! FACT! 😂

@ChristmasKraken His character has a lot of flaws but he’s not the complete idiot David Brent is Michael Scott is a likeable misunderstood idiot but with a heart .. yes it’s a different show and I’m not normally a fan of US shows but I love the office. His acting , facial expressions , delivery of lines are genius .. once I was hooked the characters all really develop and they are all great in their own ways except maybe Creed.

Creed and Meredith are like the salt and pepper of the US office Gabagool! always want to see more of them (that’s what she said). Finch over Packer though for sure

Whyisthissohard96 · 29/07/2023 00:11

The US version is far superior and I will die on this hill.

The cold open of Dwight doing the fire drill is a masterpiece.

midsomermurderess · 29/07/2023 00:14

It's not so much Americanised as American. They are very different, one the comedy of shame and embarrassment, so appealing to Brits, the other kinder and more hopeful, offering some redemption. I like both, and which one I watch would depend on my mood.

MyTruthIsOut · 29/07/2023 00:15

This thread has really made me want to start watching The Office again (USA version obviously) so I think that’s what I’m going to spend tomorrow doing 😂

I like them both in different ways, apples and oranges. I do however think that anyoneone who branslds people with a different taste in television than then an idiot is a twat.

Annoyingnamechangerperson · 29/07/2023 00:21

Definitely prefer the US version, in fact I can’t even watch the UK version I can’t stand Ricky Gervais.
I wish I was Dwight and Meredith’s friend I love them, there are so many brilliant episodes. Dinner party, Scott’s tots, the casual Friday episode. Steve Carell is comedy gold.

Well slap my butt and call me an idiot, because the American version is far superior! I literally get turned inside out with cringe, watching Ricky Gervais on screen. Steve Carrell has the cringe factor too, but is far more watchable.

Whyisthissohard96 · 29/07/2023 00:24

@Annoyingnamechangerperson I love the US version, buts Scott’s Tot’s….. I can’t watch it, it’s just to cringey 😬

Amanitacae · 29/07/2023 00:25

I thought the office was BRILLIANT. I wrote a job application based on it which eventually got me a job.

however the American office is about 10 levels up. Genius.

Titicacacandle · 29/07/2023 00:28

I love both. For years I refused to watch the office US as I thought it was shit and Americanised. I got through the first season and a half and absolutely loved it till Catherine Tate came in (they wrote her as an unlikeable character). It's now part of my loop of The Office, Peep show etc.

Problemcat · 29/07/2023 00:29

slightly aggressive… but yes Gervais is problematic and ick. American version is funnier and less self obsessed

Flufferblub · 29/07/2023 00:30

I liked the original UK version, although I find that I can't watch it now. I find it really depressing for some reason.

I've never seen the US version.

because that’s a lot of people’s lives

ClaraBourne · 29/07/2023 00:40

YANBU. True. I have been to Scranton though and it is VERY boring. We were on a road trip, stopped off for food. Sandwhich and chips. It was literally a sliced white bread sandwich with ham and some crisps. No salad, pickle or tomato. By then we were used to huge American food and so disappointed!

However the USA version of Ghosts is better (purely becuase the husband character is SO much better then the UK character, you have to wonder who would ever see anything in him ever ) Sorry to that actor. But he's a total wet.

TheGoddessFreyja · 29/07/2023 00:57

Nope, nope nope 🙅‍♀️ US Office is sooo much better. Probably the only US comedy I actually enjoy. Cannot stand friends or big bang theory but the office with Steve Carell is brilliant

EachandEveryone · 29/07/2023 01:21

What about Parks and Recreation or 30 Rock? Love them as well.

Deadringer · 29/07/2023 01:35

stuckdownahole · 28/07/2023 23:52

That does show how well written and performed it is. Martin Freeman is playing a character who secretly believes himself above the others despite being demonstrably not all that impressive. It makes it difficult to root for him.

Poor casting then? I think we will just have to agree to disagree. I find the UK office unwatchable.

DeeCee77 · 29/07/2023 01:57

Not really a fan of the original or the US version, but I do like Ricky Gervais as a stand up.

On the subject of comparing comedy, and in this case the work of Monty Python, the giants of comedy (alongside the Marx Brothers), I find anyone who prefers Holy Grail over Life of Brian to have something wrong with them.

Holy Grail is on the level of Airplane!, both have some memorable one liners ("Tis but a scratch" and "don't call me shirley"), but Life of Brian is out on its own.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 29/07/2023 02:02

Steve Carell is a genius as Michael Scott. The US version has humour and heart. It was the best.

CashmereDarling · 29/07/2023 02:12

Hard disagree. They are both good but very different.

The US version after series 1 goes in a very different direction and is incredibly well written, warm and funny. The UK version is great but lacks that warmth, it's more about the comic cringe.

CashmereDarling · 29/07/2023 02:13

Whyisthissohard96 · 29/07/2023 00:24

Same! I have to skip that episode every time!

theGooHasGone · 29/07/2023 02:20

Love Ricky Gervais but couldn't stand the UK Office, just cringeworthy. The US one is quite watchable.

So yes OP, you're unreasonable - but that was already quite obvious because you're calling people idiots for having a different opinion to you.

OCaptain · 29/07/2023 02:31

I love the US version, and I've found I cannot tolerate the British version primarily because of Ricky Gervais. I do like Mackenzie Crook (but I think he's great in everything, so there's that).

The emotional range that Steve Carell brings to the lead role makes the show. Plus, of course, there's the brilliance of Rainn Wilson as Dwight.
