To think anyone who prefers The Office (US) to The Office is an idiot?

Just that, really. Can’t understand anyone who thinks it’s better than the original. It’s just Americanised, dragged out tosh compared to the original.

If you’re going to tell me I’m wrong, please do elaborate. I’m all ears.

Can’t stand the US one. Like nails down a chalkboard.

winteriscoming2022 · 29/07/2023 06:19

I absolutely shocked myself by preferring the US one ( and I actually like RG)

mobear · 28/07/2023 21:38

They’re very different shows. I like both.

Yes; so do I.

Glorybetoallwomen · 29/07/2023 06:45

Wasn’t expecting so many replies, but thanks to all.

As previously stated, idiot was pure hyperbole. Much like, I assume, anyone saying things like the US version is ‘genius’. It’s Gervais’s baby, and therefore his genius, whether you like it or not. I suppose my beef if the fact that the American take has just spawned into such a schlep of a show. Any show with that many series just isn’t my vibe. And the whole point of the original is that it’s cringey, depressing, and, in instances, just plain Bullying and Harassment! So, yeah. They’re possibly not comparable, but then that annoys me too.

Absolutely fair play to the person who called me a twat 👌 less so to the people who’re doing the whole ‘ooh, imagine someone else liking something different’ line. It’s as trite and boring as The Office (US).

Very very different shows!

the thing about the US version is that they realised that you couldn't maintain the tone of the UK version and have an American number of episodes. It would be unwatchable. It would've been unwatchable if the UK cast and writers had done it. The UK Office is cringe distilled to its essence. So they really did have to go in a different direction. I think they pulled it off brilliantly. They also got to expand the cast and do more. I also think Steve Carell is a bit too essentially likable to be David Brent, so he had to play the character as more clueless but decent.

I like them both, though i'm not a massive fan of Ricky Gervais. But I need to be in very different moods to watch them.

most American remakes don't work well. I like a lot of American television, but they don't do well when they just try to remake British shows.

ThatshallotBaby · 29/07/2023 06:49

Completely agree @Glorybetoallwomen
The US version is like what the UK version is taking the piss out of.

I prefer the US by far … I didn’t at first but gave it another go and once past the first 2 series (which are too similar to the U.K. ) it’s brilliant and Steve Carell makes the show, his character it so much more likeable ! I watch it on a loop !

This. First season of the US one which just copied the UK version was awful. After that they made it their own and it was brilliant.

loislovesstewie · 29/07/2023 06:51

I can remember many UK shows which were redone by USA TV companies. I can say that none really came off well, they were all reduced somehow, the great point about comedy is that it has to have an element of pathos to it. So there is always some sadness, some tragedy, the people are always struggling with something. It seems that is missing from the remakes and the characters become diminished.

Herecomestreble1 · 29/07/2023 06:59

It's only a fair comparison for the first season, after that Michael Schur took it in a completely different direction and it became a successful show in its own right.

BellaJuno · 29/07/2023 07:14

Agree with the those on the thread who say they’re very different shows, to me it’s like comparing apples and pears! But overall prefer the US version as I was way more invested in the characters. I rewatch it the same way I do Friends.

If you’re a fan of the US Office, listen to the Office Ladies podcast by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, as they dissect individual episodes and give behind the scenes gossip.

I’ve just watched that clip of the fire drill - the bit with the cat was funny.Grin

I cant stand the UK one because I cant stand Ricky Gervais 🤷🏻‍♀️

This for me. He's not funny imo. I'm watching The Office US now for like the 10th time. We love it in this house and quote the show loads. Steve Carell is brilliant in it.

They’re very different shows really in tone and style. I like them both for different reasons. I think it’s unfair to dismiss people as idiots because they have different taste to you.

This.

They are totally different. I like both. I do think if you watch the first episodes of the US one it feels a bit weird because it's the same storyline as the UK one and it's just all Americanised and odd. However get past that and enjoy the tone and the characters as a separate thing and it's a great series. I thought I'd never love another TV couple as much as Tim and Dawn but Jim and Pam are amazing.

People aren't idiots just because they enjoy different things to you.

BigButtons · 29/07/2023 08:24

I loved the UK one- DB was utterly cringey and almost unbearable to watch- surely that was the whole point. I have certainly worked in places like that when I was younger. That is what they were like.
my kids really like the American one, but I have never sat down to watch it. I don’t like American humour on the whole- although I bloody loved Malcom in the middle.
maybe I should give it a go then- skip season one th say?

freetheunicorn1 · 29/07/2023 08:28

I HATE Ricky Gervais so anything he isn't in will be better!

Turtlegurl888 · 29/07/2023 08:29

I prefer the US one. Have you only seen the first season? Because it's crap compared to the rest of it. Although I've only seen a couple episodes of the UK Office so shouldn't compare. I also can't stand RG, pissed me off.

35965a · 29/07/2023 08:32

American version for me also! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 Dwight cracks me up

mildlydispeptic · 29/07/2023 08:37

After the first season, the US version really made the concept its own and made it a specifically American parody. I think that's a point in its favour.

boobot1 · 29/07/2023 08:42

I much prefer the British version, I think the British are just better at comedy altogether.

abyssofwoah · 29/07/2023 08:44

They are totally different shows. I too can’t stand Ricky Gervais so didn’t watch the UK one religiously but the US one is my comfortable happy place.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 29/07/2023 09:17

I am currently binge watching ‘people just do nothing’ again and after i finish i’ll start the office seasons again….i do like the David Brent movie as well

so thanks for starting the thread 😊

ResponsibleWalrus · 29/07/2023 09:26

I prefer the US one. Can confirm I'm not an idiot. I just like Dwight, Pam and all of Jim's facial expressions.

TheOutlaws · 29/07/2023 09:28

OP

Have you watched the UK Office recently? I was an ENORMOUS fan but it was literally unwatchable. Sexist, racist, ableist nonsense.

I’m a convert to the US Office, it’s brilliant and the improvisation is next level.
