Its disgusting, so many people suffered over the winter for utility companies to make obscene profits.

And the fact our taxes propped up those huge profits as well (the government help that was given towards bills)

It has made me so angry, I work with vulnerable people who couldn't afford to top up their gas this winter, caused so much distress.

Essential services should never have been privatised.

You can call it profit but it's also abject profiteering.
The essentials of Life should be affordable for everyone, that's why governments need to properly regulate markets, otherwise we have a winner takes all economy which benefits no one in the long run.

That’s the whole point of privatisation: for shareholders and executives to make obscene profits from utilities that used to be state-owned and run as a necessary service.

The Tory governments of the 1980s wasted the money they got from selling our birthright on tax cuts for their rich mates. Many of those MPs, or their offspring, undoubtedly still raking in profits from the privatised utilities.

Same with our railways, same with our water. (How can anyone justify selling a country’s water supply?????)

The only answer is renationalisation. But that’s not on any main party’s agenda.

Go on their website then. They're obliged to list their major shareholders. You'll find most of them are index funds. What are you expecting?

It would be good to put a real name and a face to these parasites.

The government also subsidised fuel bills for everybody this winter in order for this company to generate this profit. At the very least the government should put in a windfall tax to recoup the taxpayer subsidy

It's time utilities were taken into public ownership. What a fucking mess the capitalist strategies have made of our lives. UK land and utilities owned by other countries.

If you have a stocks and shares ISA like lots of the population, you'll probably have some shares in there unless you specified not to. (So that would be ordinary people, not 'parasites', and of course loads of pension funds). I don't think the shareholder base is the central issue here. The question is whether a windfall tax should be applied to gains which have resulted from economic circumstance and not management action. And all the potential consequences of that.

Not just making obscene profits off the backs of the little people, but up to every money grasping trick in the book to maximise profit. My sister found out that they have £1400 of her money, earning interest daily in their account. Of course they were just about to ‘return’ the overpayment they requested.
