Please write to your MP and express your disgust, especially if they are Tory. They are allowing this to happen and it is also fuelling inflation. They can't pay a fair wage to junior Drs though as that would increase inflation :(
Its disgusting and they MUST be voted out.

It is obscene. Morally bereft. I would love to get hold of a list of shareholders.

Why can't you?

agree, if these cunt-servatives have free reign all the money will be directed to their wealthy donors and backers, they dont care about the people they just want to maintain and increase their own wealth & power

tootallfortheshelf · 27/07/2023 17:23

It really is jaw droppingly obscene and I can't believe it's legal!
it's legal because the laws are made and applied by the wealthy and powerful who are thus able to work everything to their advantage
that's why money goes to money, the rich just keep getting richer, etc

Keykaty · 27/07/2023 17:26

I have no idea, but way back when the public utilities (electric, gas, trains, water etc.) were de nationalised, did the energy companies pay a whack for them to the Government? What Government was that? If they did, has the UK got value for money for the disposal? What did it do with the proceeds? Did the Government retain any shareholding in these companies? Just throwing things out from the top of my head. I am not in UK BTW.

wutheringkites · 27/07/2023 16:42

@Begsthequestion

How would you redistribute land without the State taking ownership of it?

Reinstate common land for a start.

In terms of how we replace the state is a big question, which has been debated and fought over since the nation-state as we know it first came into existence 500 years ago.

Personally, I would favour the decentralisation of power - local, democratically-run municipalities joined as a conferation, dealing with local issues and policies, which elect easily recallable delegates to represent each community on wider issues which benefit from the efficiencies of scale, such as healthcare, transport, and public utilities.

FPTP should go immediately. To me (looking on) it is the most bizarre and undemocratic form of national suffrage on the planet (apart from the US which has a similar system).

Yin and Yang forever more making decisions on the basis of a straight majority result, not a majority of voter support for the winner. As I understand it anyway.

Emotionalsupportviper · 27/07/2023 17:37

Shoxfordian · 27/07/2023 14:34

Company makes profit - appalling. Almost like that’s the point of a company or something 🙄

This isn't profit - it is profiteering.

Extortion.

As a PP has said, essential services should NEVER have been privatised - especially as so many of them are now in foreign hands, and don't give a toss about how much people in the UK are suffering.

UrsulaIsMyQueen · 27/07/2023 17:38

Begsthequestion · 27/07/2023 15:05

It would be good to put a real name and a face to these parasites.

Which is, I'm sure, one of the main reasons they hide behind index funds in the first place.

The shareholders have no control over what dividends they receive.

A lot of the money earned by public utilities was ploughed back into keeping them in good order, too - whereas the infrastructure has been allowed to degenerate under privatisation.

Here you are. Blackrock and Vanguard who own everything else are in there:

just to clarify, Blackrock and Vanguard don’t own the shares. They are held by funds that they manage on behalf of their clients who are usually pension funds, but also ISAs etc. Ironically it’s likely that some of the people complaining about the profits ( including me) are also indirect shareholders. Anyone who has a pension fund that owns any uk tracker is likely to indirectly own Centrica

Begsthequestion · 27/07/2023 17:44

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 27/07/2023 16:09

EDF posted profits of £1.1 billion this year on the UK market - that's how the French do things. Their government owned utility company makes profits in other countries.

You're conflating "the French" in the quoted post - i.e. French people who stand up for themselves and protest against the French government - with the French government itself.

We need to stand up for ourselves too, against our own government, that's what that poster meant.

Begsthequestion · 27/07/2023 17:45

UrsulaIsMyQueen · 27/07/2023 17:38

The shareholders have no control over what dividends they receive.

Pleasing the shareholders is the main objective of a company like Centrica. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

rwalker · 27/07/2023 17:48

I would like to see a break down of where it comes from
there was another headline last year about profits I think it was shell turned out the overwhelming majority of the the profits were from over seas and nothing to do with the uk
take that out and then dived it buy how many customers and it was basically a moderate profit from each customer

also if they made a loss would all those outraged people be clambering to pay more because that would be mortally right

You should write to your pension fund and encourage them to divest in fossil fuels. Some already have.

Sounds like a great argument for renationalisation tbh

There really should be an automatic windfall tax on all utility companies when profit levels are this high.

And free bailouts from the taxpayer when profits are low, right?

ScarlettSunset · 27/07/2023 18:24

I hate the way they scared so many people into paying more each month. They contacted me over and over to get me to go onto a fixed tariff. I refused and stuck to paying monthly (still by direct debit so I get the discount but only for the actual amount I owed). Not even once did my bill go above half of what they wanted me to pay monthly. They must have been raking in interest by having their customers money sitting in their account while lots of customers struggled to afford food because of their high energy bills.

BestBadger · 27/07/2023 18:41

Hiddiddleyho · 27/07/2023 15:19

Yes to all the pp's.
But who can we vote for that will make the changes we need?!

That boat sailed with Corbyn. As did the chance to end homelessness in a single parliament and to protect the NHS.

Its disgusting, so many people suffered over the winter for utility companies to make obscene profits.

Honestly? People need to vote with their feet and change suppliers when they can. Go for greener energy

ChampagneIceCream · 27/07/2023 21:22

£7k they want from us.
Fuckers.

Can the Government slap a windfall tax on this profit? Then pay back their customers?

Our really caring government? I'm sure the'll do that! 🙄

Exactly this. I mean the actual names of those investors, or owners of the Index funds. Wonder how many Tory MPs are enjoying their dividends from what they’ve allowed Ofgem to do?
