How much toilet roll do you use?

So, we had some friends coming to stay last weekend, a family of 4 with young children(3&5). The have now left but I’m left completely baffled by the amount of toilet roll they went through whilst here.

We have a guest room with its own bathroom that I left 2 full rolls in plus all the other things they might need. (shampoo/conditioner/soap/toothpaste/towels) They arrived Thu afternoon/evening and left Mon mid morning. We spent 1&1/2 days out of the house sightseeing.

They came asking for toilet roll on day 2 and I showed them where they could grab some more and after that they helped themselves. I’ve now been up to tidy up and they left all the inner rolls on the side so can see how many the have used and I just can’t understand how they managed to go through 6 full rolls during their stay! What did they do with it all?

Are we possibly very light users of toilet roll ourselves and this is completely normal? We are also a family of 4 and we would possibly go through 2 or perhaps 3 during that time.

They obviously also used the downstairs toilet, so didn’t head up to the guest toilet for every visit either.

Please help me understand where it all went!

YABU - It’s a completely normal
YANBU - How did they go through it all?

When I mean budgeted, I don’t mean she controlled what they used, but that’s how much she purchased. Ie two guests would need two extra rolls.

See this … monitoring supplies of toilet roll crap. I would HATE to have gone to your house as a guest with IBS and you count how many toilet rolls I used and then say I stole one for the journey home. Ffs!

Agreed. Jeez, it’s embarrassing enough having a shit at someone else’s house without them keeping notes on how much bog roll you use.

Quick question for the 'who gives a crap' users. - we tried the normal ones and nobody liked it as it's rather thin. Do you buy the more expensive one (bamboo?)?

We do. I thought the regular was fine but my DH apparently has a fussy butt…

I’m slightly astonished by all these people saying it lasts for 6 months, 8, 9 months. We’re a family of 4 and 48 rolls lasts 16 weeks. That’s 3 a week which sounds totally normal to me. It’d be great if we could make it last longer but we definitely can’t!

I use a lot of toilet roll. I was in hospital for 2 weeks in June and I was getting through a toll a day but the antibiotics I was on were making me poo about 10 times a day. I got my husband to bring in our own. Hospital stuff is awful and I felt guilty for using so much!

blahblahblah1654 · 26/07/2023 09:42

A roll a day*

isthismylifenow · 26/07/2023 09:50

Did you do all the cooking? 😂

I went away recently and one of the nights my 20 yo dd stayed over in my room using that bathroom with me.

The next morning I went to use the loo and the roll was finished! In a day! Then I forgot how much less loo roll I buy now that she has moved out, she does have some stomach issues though. And also, don't forget about the 'forever wipe' 😀 its a true problem for some folk.

JudgeRudy · 26/07/2023 09:51

I'm just curious, if you know this, why would you bring a toilet roll with you rather than address your behaviour? Is it a type of OCD?

isthismylifenow · 26/07/2023 09:53

Also, they have become a bit sneaky here (not in UK) with loo roll price increasing so drastically, some manufactures are making 200 sheet rolls, as well as the 350 sheet normal ones. Not sure if that is there same there, but 150 sheets makes quite a difference.

Can someone explain to me about these What the Crap rolls... obviously we don't get them, but what is different about them that they last so much longer?

Chlora · 26/07/2023 10:02

When I was a student it used to be one roll per person week, but that was when we were out a good bit daytimes and evenings. How much a family of 4 will use when staying over with you may be very different to how much the same family will use at home in a normal week, when out at school and work most days.

Presumably they lined up the loo rolls so they could go in the recycling.

Our Who gives a Crap rolls last so long because me and DH don't use much loo roll.

On both only poo once a day and I only wee a couple of times a day. I know women that wee endless times a day so, obviously, they use more

DaisyWaldron · 26/07/2023 10:20

WGAC user here, and I use the bamboo rolls. The ordinary ones disintegrated mid-wipe leaving little balls of loo roll where I'd wiped.

dcsp · 26/07/2023 10:32

Family of 3 here. We probably go through three 9 packs per fortnight, so 4.5 rolls per week per person.

I'm shocked at how little it seems some other people on here can use - I really don't think we're using more than is needed so I don't know how people manage to use so little.

It's highly unusual to only wee twice a day. Six or seven times is more normal.

wendyjoy · 26/07/2023 10:35

Gosh that's normal. I'm on my own and use that ammount.
Thought everyone did.

'Who gives a crap' lasts ages - way longer than regular rolls. I know this cause my husband bought a box and I gave him a lecture about how expensive they were and he said it's because there's so much more paper per roll. I doubted him, but he was totally right. We are a family of 4, (3females!) and have had to delay delivery of our new box of 48 rolls for 3 months, so we've got through about 30 rolls in 6 months. That is about half the rolls we used to get throug from aldi.

We've found the same. A box of 48 rolls lasts us about a year - there are only two of us, but we do have loads of visitors plus we both wfh so never use office loos. I think it works out the same as Tesco luxury 9 pack which is what we used to buy before WGAC.

blahblahblah1654 · 26/07/2023 10:45

I tried WGAC and found it rough and thin. Even the more luxury version. I got a trial pack. Definitely not more economical. Shame as I know it's better for the environment.

Rockbird · 26/07/2023 10:47

About a million rolls a week. Judging by the number of tubes that are left on the bathroom window sill anyway...

EmmaMY · 26/07/2023 10:47

We must be very low users of toilet roll then as I buy it very infrequent and only a pack of 9. Our family of 4 only use about 2 a week collectively, and the same rolls as guests were given obviously. (They used 2 a day)

Will up my spare roll provisions for future stays as the majority of people that have answered on here seams to think that’s completely normal!

I still don’t understand how it’s possibly, but hey ho, that’s just me! Over and out!

We are heavy users going by some of the comments here 😂family of 3, one with IBS and 2 who have periods. DC poos maybe every 2-3 days, DP goes 1-3 times a day and I go 1-5 times a day (guess who's the one with IBS!) DP uses a stingy amount which I can't wrap my head around - if I use too little it disintegrates so I need a good wad each time. On that basis, I'd say we use 2 and a half rolls a day. I've always been very aware of my TP usage, many a family member has pointed it out but try as I might, it just can't be helped.

I said "a couple of times" but didn't mean literally twice. Most days I wee about 3 to 4 times a day. I drink plenty but just do not need to wee very often

WishIwasElsa · 26/07/2023 10:54

Our family is 4 and we seem to go through a roll a day which I thought was a lot. But I also think loo rolls have shrunk and now have less on them than before. Like everything it gone up loads or shrunk or both!

houselife · 26/07/2023 11:08

People on the thread who are shocked how much/little other families are using...it's not a like-for-like comparison though as I'm assuming in some families people will be out all day at work or school, whereas others are all home all the time. So of course there will be some vast differences. If we're going to compare, let's do it properly, and state how much you're actually at home, how many women vs men, etc. 😁

CheersToMe · 26/07/2023 11:13

Your guests might have left the empty rolls so you didn't think they'd packed full rolls in their luggage #costoflivjngWink

BackupFail · 26/07/2023 11:16

I think that's an insane amount of toilet roll. I have my own ensuite which only I use, and I rarely use any other toilet in the house. A roll probably lasts me a week.

My dh would probably use one a day. It certainly wouldn't last more than 2 days...

And same with the kitchen roll, I might ask for a sheet to wipe something, or if I'm eating and want a napkin, and he'll give me 3. 🙄

Totally unnecessary, and that's the problem, It's not about rationing, it's about the waste...

Cocktopus · 26/07/2023 11:18

Three adults here. We get through about ten rolls a week.
