That Mumsnet should drop the D?

PlinkPlonkFizz · 24/07/2023 15:20

Adding D to all family, friends and pets is ridiculous! To see adults referring to their "DH" who has subjected them to assault or abuse is particularly nauseating. And DDog! FFS! Is it not just time to drop the D?

Nah love it. A sense of irony and quirky. A nod to the old days .

FloofCloud · 24/07/2023 20:51

WTAF .... is NOTHING sacred! 🤪

I get confused with DF and DF (fiancé / father) ... sometimes takes a bit of working out lol

I liked DDog so much we now have an axolotl called Dax O'Lotl

Comedy gold.

Oceanus · 24/07/2023 21:15

Am I the only one googling axolotls? And going oooh!! ahhhh! at all the pics?

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 24/07/2023 21:43

Meh... They don't bother me really. But I do LOATHE

DDOG

DCAT

DNIECE

DNEPHEW

FFS, just put the word dog, cat, niece, or nephew! You are actually creating extra work putting the extra D here!!!

Putting DH or DD or DS or DC or DP (for husband, daughter, son, child, or partner is OK,) but that should be it.

And yeah, as has been said it is NOT a mumsnet thing. ivillage used to do this when I was on it 24-25 years ago.

Mumsnet needs to change its name to parentsnet.

Oh do be quiet!

The best I’ve seen is Dgekko

I think it’s funny!

😂🦎

It all gets a bit much but I must admit I chuckle at DFish! I should maybe use DGuineaPig(s) when I write about them. They really are dear to me though , I suppose it's heartening that so many MNetters consider their MIL to deserve a D!

If you use 'DGPs' you'll have the added fun of nobody knowing whether you're taking about your guinea pigs, grandparents or doctors 🧐

ticketstickets · 24/07/2023 22:15

not exclusive to mumsnet at all. When its a horrible partner/other relative you can always subsitute damned or dickhead or dastardly in your head. :)

SquashPenguin · 24/07/2023 22:21

I see DH and I read it as dickhead.

it takes about 0.02 seconds longer to write out the actual person than all that D nonsense.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 24/07/2023 22:25

Also see GF. Grandfather, goady fucker or gluten free?

What if your Grandfather has a Girlfriend who is both of the others as well?!

I'm longing for the day when somebody with slightly more exotic pets than standard starts a thread about their DAardvark or even their DDeer!

KisstheTeapot14 · 24/07/2023 18:17

DCat says she won't be downgraded.

R for RoyalCat or Q for QueenCat she will certainly consider.

😂😽

PistachioGelato · 24/07/2023 22:32

So many CFs too.

Mumsnet needs to change its name to parentsnet.

Not everyone is a parent or wants to be one, but I agree that the name needs to be reconsidered.

Mumsnet needs to change its name to parentsnet.

A lot of people on here aren't even parents though.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 24/07/2023 22:55

Not everyone is a parent or wants to be one, but I agree that the name needs to be reconsidered.

It would be absolute madness to consider renaming it now, after all of these years of prominence. Unless a brand name is/becomes 'problematic' - such as having racist overtones, or the previous name of Scope - however much it may adapt, you don't change it and lose all of the power that you've built up behind it.

Carphone Warehouse went on for decades after anybody had phones that had to live permanently in their cars. Sky haven't changed their name - and probably won't - even after they've switched everybody to internet-based streaming TV rather than actually receiving their telly from 'the sky' via a dish.

The United Kingdom has only just finally - after a 7-decade hiatus - got a king again, and is very much devolved, discordant and not united in many ways; but nobody has ever considered seriously changing our name!

Rewis · 24/07/2023 22:59

"D"H

Ineedwinenow · 24/07/2023 23:06

I’m commenting on here for Dpets! What others has there been over the years? I’ve only heard of Ddog and Dcat but according to this thread there is apparently been Dfish and Dhamster.

Sorry OP to derail completely but the Dpets are making me chuckle! Maybe it needs its own thread. Grin

Appleass · 25/07/2023 11:16

Yep agree that D makes me cringe !

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 25/07/2023 11:45

When I joined MN I lurked a bit, read some threads and got to know the 'rules', posting conventions etc
So DP/DH etc.

DS1 (3) meant first son, aged 3.

Then I decided to start posting. I used the abbreviations, quote style that existed then etc etc.

If I'd hated it enough that I wanted it to change I would have joined another site instead, not asked an existing one to change for me.

That was about 15 years ago (I think). And I know things change, but I get irrationally annoyed when people use other posting 'styles' eg DS3 to mean 3 year old son.
If you don't like the D, don't use it. But don't expect others to stop either.

mrssanchez · 24/07/2023 16:12

I'm fine with it, I always read it as a sarcastic "darling" husband...

I do hate DTD though, surely sex is the same amount of letters?

DTD is annoying but one forum I used to go on, used 'BD' which stood for Baby Dancing. And it was such a thing, I'm sure people used to use it when they didn't even want to conceive!!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/07/2023 19:01

I find DDog quite funny tbh.

I agree with you when people say DH in reference to their abusive husbands etc. That's just weird!

Was it BBC?
They used to use it and it made me cringe myself inside out, as did AF, (Aunt Flo), for period.

Mumsnet needs to change its name to parentsnet.

Why? It was developed by mums for mums. Are women not allowed anything if their own anymore?
