That Mumsnet should drop the D?

PlinkPlonkFizz · 24/07/2023 15:20

Adding D to all family, friends and pets is ridiculous! To see adults referring to their "DH" who has subjected them to assault or abuse is particularly nauseating. And DDog! FFS! Is it not just time to drop the D?

OP posts:

Agree.

ilovesushi · 24/07/2023 17:29

I like that mumsnet has its own linguistic universe. Be interested to know when/ how the D abbreviations started.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 24/07/2023 17:29

Dropping the D is a clear indicator that a spouse is being a bit of an arse, however. Some posters might find this useful...

wendyjoy · 24/07/2023 17:30

I don't even understand half the abbreviations and I've had a computer since Tim Berners-Lee invented the World wide Web.

Madamecastafiore · 24/07/2023 17:31

I love Dubbonet.

Lifeomars · 24/07/2023 17:31

i find it a bit twee and dated. a bit 50's homemaker. It doesn't sit well when it is followed by an account of a nasty and abusive behaviour .

Comefromaway · 24/07/2023 15:27

It started way, way, way back with the first message boards such as ivillage

I'd forgotten about ivillage!

Are there posters out there using 'D' with gritted teeth, while hating it and wishing someone would start a crusade to stop it? Or are posters all just doing what they like or are used to?

I'm guessing it's the later.

There's no obligation - if you don't like it don't use it. It's fine.
If you can't bare to even see it don't come on here?

I do prefer keeping my clothes on, it's true.

nalabae · 24/07/2023 17:35

Only DDog and Dchild I think

Never happening D-ream on.

😂

marchdays · 24/07/2023 17:38

The D has lasted so long on tinternet that I think it's here to stay - whether it's annoying or not it works! It's part of the universal language now.

Has anyone mentioned AF yet?!!!

SideEyeSally · 24/07/2023 17:38

I liked DDog so much we now have an axolotl called Dax O'Lotl

As someone who spends some time on photography boards and websites, I always initially read "AF" as "autofocus"!

Justleaveitblankthen · 24/07/2023 17:48

Some of the posts are hundreds of words long too: 'So as not to drip feed' It seems ridiculous and I still don't understand some of them.
I still do it myself though

Sugarfish · 24/07/2023 17:54

I’ve never really liked it though I do use it. Suppose I just want to fit in.

The excuse of it saving time is ridiculous though when someone’s written a huge post full of paragraphs. How much time are you saving really?

PoshPineapple · 24/07/2023 17:54

I'd not flinch at referring to my cats as DCats, I draw the line at DH though. Just H will do nicely, thank you😂

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 24/07/2023 17:55

To D, or not to D, that is the question ....

It isn’t obligatory, @PlinkPlonkFizz - if you don’t like the D, don’t use it. I’ve been on MN for years, and use it a lot of the time - partly habit and partly because it makes the typing a bit quicker.

But Mumsnet is not one single entity - it’s made up of a lot of people, and he majority of them seem to be happy with the D, so are unlikely to drop it just because a few posters don’t like it, and MNHQ aren’t going to ban it because they don’t have the time, staff or man hours to police such a ban.

So you have to decide whether the stuff you like about MN outweighs the irritation of the D, and you can stay, or whether it annoys you so much you need to find another website.

pointythings · 24/07/2023 17:59

I would just like to say that I think DMumsnet should definitely keep the D so that we can all refer to our DCats, DDogs, DGardens, DSofas and all things D. It's DDivine, DDelightful and DDelicious.

Abrupt · 24/07/2023 17:59

I always thought NDN meant not-dear-neighbour given the number of disputes on here. But I think it just means next door neighbour…?

Butchyrestingface · 24/07/2023 18:00

I have consulted with DParrots. They say drop the Dear Husband/Partner by all means, but it totally unreasonable to suggest they should not be referred to in glowing terms at ALL times.

DeeHaitch · 24/07/2023 18:06

I pronounce it like this. How do you like them apples D@PlinkPlonkFizz ?

KisstheTeapot14 · 24/07/2023 18:17

DCat says she won't be downgraded.

R for RoyalCat or Q for QueenCat she will certainly consider.

ChristinaMirabilis · 24/07/2023 18:29

DBun is not amused.

Oceanus · 24/07/2023 18:40

Sorry but I like the "D". Specially after that thread about thrush cream for the Milipede. That pet was and is worthy of a "D".😘
