That Mumsnet should drop the D?

PlinkPlonkFizz · 24/07/2023 15:20

Adding D to all family, friends and pets is ridiculous! To see adults referring to their "DH" who has subjected them to assault or abuse is particularly nauseating. And DDog! FFS! Is it not just time to drop the D?

OP posts:
Coconaut · 24/07/2023 16:49

I came across the DH thing years and years ago on a knitting group message board. Well before mumsnet.

whatausername · 24/07/2023 16:52

But I like the D...

I think you meant DFunsponge! 🧽

Dammit, you beat me to it! 🤣

I agree with you OP, and going by the vote so do the majority. Which is really weird, it implies that people use it because they think it's some kind of rule! Why doesn't everyone who doesn't like it just start writing son, daughter, husband etc in full? Then it will just die out.

With the exception of OP, which I think is fairly standard on every forum I've used, I've never used any of the silly abbreviations on Mumsnet. It isn't difficult to type son, daughter, friend etc, and I'm not going to start now!

Jongleterre · 24/07/2023 16:54

I hate the abbreviations. I don't know what half of them mean and would never use any of them.

😂Post of the day!

blacknredsweeties · 24/07/2023 16:55

I hate putting DH. I type husband. He is not a dear 😡😡

MsFannySqueers · 24/07/2023 16:57

@NoChanceYouMetalBastard 😂😂😂😂

Notbeforemycoffeeplease · 24/07/2023 16:58

People can say “not this again” all they want but I’m with the original poster. It’s one of the reasons I can’t log onto this frequently as it’s easier reading hyroglyphics than some of the messages posted on here with the DH, DSD2, DGD3, BFF, XBFF, XDIL and whatnot. Why can’t you just write the word? Is this some kind of parallel universe? I’m sure we all find many spouses, partners and family members to be ‘dear’ to us but seriously, can we be grown ups when writing on a forum? I’m amazed it’s not DMumsnet, if I’m honest. I can understand certain phrases are abbreviated, for example ‘LTB’ as it’s a little crude but just say who you’re talking about when referring to people, please.

LTB?

NoTouch · 24/07/2023 17:01

dh - h - "d"h - ddog - no problems with any of them. It makes skim reading much easier. If you prefer husband/partner go for it.

I would much prefer they banned posters that use - hubby, kiddies, etc - makes my teeth itch and I skip the rest of the post and/or thread.

Monsteramum · 24/07/2023 17:02

I always read stb exdp as shit the bed exdp.

shockthemonkey · 24/07/2023 17:07

Actually, you'd hate me because I have pets and use DD for my dog and DH for my horse.

Just to confuse people.

Actually not really, only in posts where the context makes it clear that I'm talking about my dog and my horse, not my daughter and my husband.

tinytemper66 · 24/07/2023 17:10

I never use the D. I just use son, husband, mother etc...

GaspingGekko · 24/07/2023 17:10

YallaYallaaa · 24/07/2023 15:23

The best I’ve seen is Dgekko

I think it’s funny!

Well I personally approve of that one.

Thatboymum · 24/07/2023 17:12

It’s super pretence I hate it

Tetchypants · 24/07/2023 17:13

I hate them too. As if DS, DM, DD are easier to type and read than son, mum, dad.

And, having been here a very long time, I know that men are often not dear and woman are definitely not darlings. The only one that doesn’t annoy me quite as much as the others is MIL etc. might even have been guilty of using that one.

Love

whatsappdoc · 24/07/2023 17:14

Not everyone is a 'D'. MIL, FIL, PIL, SIL, BIL, OH, STBEXH are not 'D's. And we never use Duncle or Daunt etc so very few imo are 'D's.
DH and DP never register as anything other than the other half. Ddog and other animals are cute.
The old convention for DC was eg Dd1(5) and Dd2(3) and I still use it.
At the end of the day if people are confused and it actually matters to them, ask for clarification. And don't use them yourself if it's so repugnant.

dollybird · 24/07/2023 17:17

I love Ddog, and I don't even like dogs!

2bazookas · 24/07/2023 17:19

FFS? no irony left?

If I referred to DH as H you'd all think I'm Megan.

StopStartStop · 24/07/2023 17:19

There's a supermodel on my D.

Not mine, obviously.

BicOrange · 24/07/2023 17:20

I always read (D)GP as (Darling) Guinea Pigs target than Grandparents.

BertieBotts · 24/07/2023 17:22

Yeah but son, mum, dad are the easy ones to type.

Daughter and husband (used way more often than mum or dad) are longer. And you need a quick way to differentiate between different children, like if you wanted to post about an argument between your two daughters.

If you are using daughter, husband, son etc then you also tend to need an extra pronoun in there - "my" - or it looks grammatically incorrect. Whereas DD / DS can be used with the same grammar rules as a name because that is the typical convention.

So "My second eldest daughter" is a lot more to type than "DD2"

JellyComb · 24/07/2023 17:25

Ive never used those stupid D things. I just type the real word. If i'm faced with a long post using all sorts of DSis and DSIL etc i lose interest very quickly and won't bother reading it.

I think people who use these D words are twats quite frankly.

willWillSmithsmith · 24/07/2023 17:25

Laiste · 24/07/2023 16:39

Are there posters out there using 'D' with gritted teeth, while hating it and wishing someone would start a crusade to stop it? Or are posters all just doing what they like or are used to?

I'm guessing it's the later.

There's no obligation - if you don't like it don't use it. It's fine.
If you can't bare to even see it don't come on here?

I do both. Sometimes I’ll write it in full and sometimes I’ll put the D abbreviation. I do it through gritted teeth though 😬😁
