To be bored of wood fired pizzas every week?

DH got given one of those Ooni pizza ovens for his birthday last summer. Every Saturday right into autumn we would have pizza oven pizza, then tailed off when the weather changed.

It started again around Easter and now - every week without fail - we have one night that is pizza oven pizza.

Thing is, I just don't like it all that much. DH and the kids think it's great but I honestly prefer a shop bought pizza.

I find the pizza oven too stodgy, the sauce gives me heartburn. I can't get excited by it.

My friend has an Ooni oven and raved about it.

What am I missing? Is there something I should be doing toppings wise that will make me enjoy it more?

Weird middle class flex but ok.

RoomOfRequirement · 23/07/2023 18:28

I hate really crispy pizza and I feel like all those ovens make them too cooked for me.

mumda · 23/07/2023 18:29

Dessert pizza.

Or garlic bread with cheese and toppings.

I am deeply envious.

Mutinyonthecrunchie · 23/07/2023 18:30

Each to their own but sounds like a lot of faff for much of nothing.

LadyGAgain · 23/07/2023 18:30

DH makes the dough. The pizza isn't stodgy. (Pizza pilgrims recipe). Really really thin base and thicker at the edges. Squelch plum tomatoes and add seasoning/herbs. The thinnest spread on the dough. Only use a bit of mozzarella then any other toppings. Goats cheese, honey and walnuts was exciting!

Another game changer - chilli honey drizzled over the top after pizza comes out of the ooni. We haven't got one so make it in frying pan on the gas and once the base is cooked put it under the grill. Delish!

Am I the only one who wonders who gifted the pizza oven to the OP's husband...it wasn't you was it @ooninooni ?

I don't think it's the op that sounds drunk, there's some right miserable fuckers on this thread accusing op of being a miserable fucker 🙄

I'm no help because I've never tried one but some of the suggestions sound nice

I am only about halfway though the thread and this has been my thought all along. Sorry OP - I am sure you are normally lovely! But not on here.

We dont have an OONI - friends of mine bought themselves one as a 25th wedding anniversary present. And apparently love it. That was last summer - funnily enough I haven't seen a single (dull) photo this.

Yeah because you sound really pleasant yourself @Monster80

mrsbyers · 23/07/2023 18:35

Love ours but don’t use it every week , I always have a really thin base with just good tomato sauce and cheese

Catusrusty · 23/07/2023 18:36

I could definitely eat pizza once a week but it would have to be good pizza.

I'm lucky as one family member is a chef and pizza obsessed. His Sicilian style pizza is insane it's so good. People frequently say it is the best they've ever tasted when he makes it. I've had someone at work beg for some more leftovers to be brought in.

I think from learning all about pizza dough and flour types and sourdough and hydration levels from him, I can reliably tell you that by far the most important factor is to make the dough well in advance. Three days in the fridge will vastly improve the the dough, so instead of tasteless stodge it actually have real depth of flavour whether you are making a thin Romana or a thick Sicilian style.

Also, a mixture of white and red pizzas to mix things up really helps. He does do one with a bbq sauce base too.

I hope you can find a way to get the use out of it OP as Oonis are ruddy expensive.

We have had our unni, 😂 before the name change! Quite a few years, haven’t used it yet this year. We sometimes used to buy the semi frozen pizza dough from unni and have it delivered, just easier if DH couldn’t be bothered to get the Kenwood Chef out to make dough. We use the Mutti pizza sauce, it really lovely, the nicest we have found. The thing that puts me off the pizza oven is we can’t all eat together, pizzas have to be made/served individually.

That's ok. Seems you agreed with an abusive post, so....maybe time to think about how nice you are.

this thread isnt about me - remember?

Sceptre86 · 23/07/2023 18:39

Could you try to make pide (a type of Turkish flatbread) in the ooni? You can experiment with all types of fillings. Might be nice for you as an alternative?

ooninooni · 23/07/2023 18:40

I'm off to eat my gopping Ooni pizza now, so that's all folks.

Thanks all!

If he is cooking one night a week and the kids love it, I'm not sure what the problem is.

You don't have to eat it!

At least he's not lazy. If this was us it would still be in the box. 😁

HarveyDanger · 23/07/2023 18:44

You know you can cook more than pizzas in an Ooni? We we did a beef joint and wedges not long ago. 😋

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 23/07/2023 18:45

He’s doing it wrong. Just like men who bbq once a year and never cook any other time.

Not surprised it’s making you stabby. Bowls of dough covered with damp cloth hosting a bacterial gang bang would tip me over the edge though. Just make it with strong flour in a breadmaker and chuck some semolina over it like a normal person. I bet he’s using “00” flour isn’t he.

noglow · 23/07/2023 18:46

ooninooni · 23/07/2023 17:21

I'm just tired of it being presented as a massive 'treat' every week.

It's very underwhelming.

Middle class fad if you ask me.

Then just do your own thing. Get a takeaway curry or a kebab and a cider and nosh away.

HarveyDanger · 23/07/2023 18:47

We’ve also cooked croissants, burgers, sausages and chicken kebabs

noglow · 23/07/2023 18:47

Or a dominos
