To be bored of wood fired pizzas every week?

DH got given one of those Ooni pizza ovens for his birthday last summer. Every Saturday right into autumn we would have pizza oven pizza, then tailed off when the weather changed.

It started again around Easter and now - every week without fail - we have one night that is pizza oven pizza.

Thing is, I just don't like it all that much. DH and the kids think it's great but I honestly prefer a shop bought pizza.

I find the pizza oven too stodgy, the sauce gives me heartburn. I can't get excited by it.

My friend has an Ooni oven and raved about it.

What am I missing? Is there something I should be doing toppings wise that will make me enjoy it more?

I would not be impressed with what is essentially cheese on toast for a main meal. I'd only ever consider it as a snack for lunch.

therainycamper · 23/07/2023 18:16

OP I had exactly the same thing as it took DH ages to get the dough right. It does seem to be some overnight process and particular type of flour. I now really like them but I do understand the not wanting them every weekend.

I’m with you, any home made type pizza is awful and I eat it with resentment. I would hate to have to eat this once a week.

Monster80 · 23/07/2023 18:18

You sound like you should do the cooking instead. If you work the pans and that square thing with round buttons that heats up food - you can choose menus. Not exactly rocket science!

LuckySantangelo35 · 23/07/2023 18:11

@ooninooni

well why aren’t you doing it then?
just get yourself something different to eat than the others

Maybe I am doing it? But would like to find a way to be part of the wood fired 'fun'?

  1. Ask him to try making the crust thinner
  2. Most importantly, it is time to mix up the toppings . I have an adult onset tomato Allergy. Sometimes DH eats my marinara free pizza and he has no heartburn. There are so many amazing combinations for pizza toppings. The truth is you don’t need any sauce at all, but there are also tons of different sauces you can use. Start by thinking about meals that are good as picky bits or charcuterie boards, then imagine those things laid out on bread and fired. food of the gods.

I like my Ooni. I also like thin pizza base, so I just stretch it out thin. Maybe try shaping your own pizza base so you can have it as you want it? Also, not too much topping. Too much topping makes it soggy and not nice.

Another revolutionary suggestion. Thank god you turned up.

So take some ownership then. You’re whining about something but ‘haven’t the interest’ to do anything about it. Either get involved - help make the dough, roll out to your preferred thickness, whatever - or speak to your husband and tell him you’re happy for him and the kids to have pizza but you’re fancying a change so will sort yourself out for dinner. What sort of relationship do you have where you can’t just have this conversation with him?!

This! Can’t bear whingers who don’t own
their misery. Yawn etc.

Billoddiesbeard · 23/07/2023 18:21

Not the answer you want OP but....YABU I love our ooni. It makes great pizza, DH does all the prep and cooking so a win win for me.

In fairness we don't use it every week religiously, as your dh does, that might be part of the problem it's no longer a treat for you.

@Georgyporky

out of interest what would constitute a meal for you?

there’s certainly enough calories in a pizza for it to constitute a main meal!

Oh that's interesting, thanks! DId not know that re: tomato allergies.

It’s an oven
You can change the pizza base/topping etc etc

I can only apologise that you felt compelled to read and post on my whingeing thread rather than scrolling on by - which by the sounds of it would have been easier for you to bear.

@ooninooni fwiw I reckon I can spot the summer holiday posters and it ain’t you.

to stay half on topic, I applaud his effort but how bad is your dh at making pizza if he’s managed to put you off it! Wink

Does he make it with Italian 00 flour? Or bread flour? 00 will make a better base.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 23/07/2023 18:25

I would hate to have any meal every single week.

But would use the hot oven for something I like like sardines.

Shop bought cheese?

Where do you get your cheese from? Do you make your own?

My god whats wrong with you

Dont you know the difference between cheese you buy in a shop and grate yourself

Or grated cheese you buy in a shop

You should be shot for using the second

I love pizza and make them regularly in the oven but weekly would make me bored too. I also like a super super thin base (more important in the oven I guess) so I roll my bases. Lots of Olives, pesto and basil plus various cheeses, yum. Not every week though which is why I've not bothered with an ooni but hopefully DH will cool it soon and vary the menu!

Congrats you did not have to cook once a week for the whole year!

my manager told me once she praised her hubby every time he cooked even though food tasted horrible. Now, after years of practice, he cooks delicious meals everyday.

Peachy2005 · 23/07/2023 18:27

I find pizza really boring; a whole plate of the exact same thing. But I don’t know anybody who agrees.
