To be bored of wood fired pizzas every week?

DH got given one of those Ooni pizza ovens for his birthday last summer. Every Saturday right into autumn we would have pizza oven pizza, then tailed off when the weather changed.

It started again around Easter and now - every week without fail - we have one night that is pizza oven pizza.

Thing is, I just don't like it all that much. DH and the kids think it's great but I honestly prefer a shop bought pizza.

I find the pizza oven too stodgy, the sauce gives me heartburn. I can't get excited by it.

My friend has an Ooni oven and raved about it.

What am I missing? Is there something I should be doing toppings wise that will make me enjoy it more?

I'm also a whiny little bitch and so over the weekly pizza. I'm also fed up of the cleaning up after the dough making and the 4 thousand bloody toppings in individual dishes Envy

We like Pate on toast every Saturday as a treat . Not spread too thick though.

YANBU to think Ooni is a middle-class fad - lots of people in my social circle bought them a couple of years ago, even people who weren't particular pizza enthusiasts. It was very much the "in" thing a couple of years ago. Most people I know barely use theirs now. We didn't bother and I'm glad - we do enjoy pizza, but we wouldn't have used it enough to justify the space it would take up (or indeed the expense).

CapEBarra · 23/07/2023 17:54

Oh god, they’re such a faff. I went to a party where someone had offered to make wood fired pizza with an Ooni and they were nice enough, but good grief they were cooking for two and a half hours, and in the end it was just a pizza, not the taj mahal in cake form or anything exciting. Can you suggest barbecue or can you use it as a tandoor or something? Or just buy yourself something nice.

Shydelta · 23/07/2023 17:54

Stodgy pizza is the pits. Sounds like he’s doing it wrong! I feel your pain!

I'm just tired of it being presented as a massive 'treat' every week.

It's very underwhelming.

Middle class fad if you ask me.

Your husband and children like it, you don’t so have something else instead. Is there a point to this thread?

MillWood85 · 23/07/2023 17:59

There's a local hotel to us that has a massive pizza oven in their kitchen, and their pizzas are mouthwatering. There is also very clearly a knack to cooking the toppings but not making the base burnt and bitter.

Some relations raved about their own pizza oven. It was absolutely bloody rank. Undercooked thick dough and the topping was shop bought grated cheese on top of thickly spread tomato puree. I had heartburn for days.

We've got one but use it about once a month unless DS comes home and he always asks in advance as he misses it. Just roll the dough out thinner and I'd put goats cheese and bacon lardons on mine.

howrudeforme · 23/07/2023 18:00

Exh from Italy. Spent a lot of time there.

ex mil would make the odd pizza which is thicker dough ect and in the oven and not wood fired.

Want a decent pizza we’d go to a pizzeria! None of this wood fired contraption everyone’s buying.

I’d hate pizza every week. What a bloody faff making the dough. Even my da who’s Italian as they come is not the biggest pizza fan.

Shop bought cheese?

Where do you get your cheese from? Do you make your own?

This is exactly how I feel about it.

We love our Ooni pizzas, my pizza dough is fantastic and light (I don't use the Ooni recipe) and the flavour of the pizzas is amazing.

We use it to cook lots of other things too and love the wood fired taste, but if you don't like it you don't like it, there's no right or wrong. Let your DH feed the DCs once a week and do your own thing!

Can you share the recipe thanks?

Hadn't thought of lardons, thanks.

Carbonara pizza is divine. I use a fairly thick bechamel.with parmesan in it and top it with mozzarella and bacon lardons.

Tresto · 23/07/2023 18:06

we don’t have the pizza oven but I make a base from just flour and yoghurt. It’s my favourite dough and I love pizza! I would have it a few times a week with different toppings.

Papernotplastic · 23/07/2023 18:06

Even if the pizza was perfect and didn’t give me indigestion, I think I’d get sick of having it every week. It’s not a ‘treat’ if you don’t enjoy it.

Having said that, I love roasted veg and I’ll bet you could get really good flavour into them cooking them in that way. Roasted with feta crumbled over to serve or aubergines served with some stolen pizza sauce and mozzarella.

NortieTortie · 23/07/2023 18:08

The Backyard Pizza UK Facebook group has some good recipes, maybe venture out of pizza.

whereiswilson · 23/07/2023 18:09

Thank you @TonTonMacoute

ooninooni · 23/07/2023 17:12

Yes, I had work out that solution myself, thank you.

@ooninooni

well why aren’t you doing it then?
just get yourself something different to eat than the others

whereiswilson · 23/07/2023 18:12

We have one, and they all seem to love it. I just prefer thin pizzas. Dh has tried many dough recipes but it’s not really for me..

I tried garlic bread, that was nice actually

we Have acquired a ninja Wood fire grill .
I feel your pain …. I hate smoked food & food charred to death .

UndercoverCop · 23/07/2023 18:13

I love a white pizza try marscapone, tallegio, broccoli and caramelised onions, or ricotta loads of garlic (smoked if you can get it) , mozarella and chilli, or creme fraiche mixed with parmesan and black pepper with garlic , mushrooms and asparagus. Some fresh herbs mixed in our some fresh rocket on top lightly dressed with lemon juice and olive oil make it taste fresher.

I find avoiding the tomato sauce and greasy meats you often get on pizza means I don't get indigestion!
