To be bored of wood fired pizzas every week?

DH got given one of those Ooni pizza ovens for his birthday last summer. Every Saturday right into autumn we would have pizza oven pizza, then tailed off when the weather changed.

It started again around Easter and now - every week without fail - we have one night that is pizza oven pizza.

Thing is, I just don't like it all that much. DH and the kids think it's great but I honestly prefer a shop bought pizza.

I find the pizza oven too stodgy, the sauce gives me heartburn. I can't get excited by it.

My friend has an Ooni oven and raved about it.

What am I missing? Is there something I should be doing toppings wise that will make me enjoy it more?

I've posted in AIBU to ask if I'm the only one who is underwhelmed by this food and people are offering relationship advice and other meal suggestions.

Hilarious.

People can't work AIBU anymore.

So you want know if there are any other people who don’t particularly like their pizza ovens?

And you’re giving shitty replies to people who expand further and try to give alternative solutions?

The school holidays are going to be very long at this rate.

Jericha · 23/07/2023 17:27

I hear you. We got an Ooni and I really like it but we use it 4-5 a year maximum. I am a carb and pizza queen and even I'd get bored of it every Saturday. Apparently you can get griddles for it to do steak and tandoori chicken. Also "sweet" pizzas with Nutella etc.

Yes.

I want to know if other people finding it really underwhelming.

I know that my bar is low but I'd just be so excited that someone else was thinking about what was for dinner!

ooninooni · 23/07/2023 17:22

Basically, yes?

Hence me asking if IWBU to not see the fascination with it?

Agreed.
Eating the same thing every week gets dull even if you like it.
Have never understood the obsession with barbecues and would feel the same about pizza no matter how delicious.

But what I really feel your pain with is the branding of said pizza/barbecue/whatever as some kind of treat which I should we overly grateful for. It can also often be used as a kind of get out clause for other potentially reciprocal arrangements - "well I made the wonderful pizzas on Friday so you should cook every other night of the week" kind of thing.

That's interesting. I love pizza and I liked this maybe the first one or two times but not it's just so meh and faffy.

The flour costs a fortune. The sauce costs a fortune. The logs cost a fortune. The oven itself cost a fortune.

All for something I find really run of the mill.

Yes, because by the sound of it they will get as bored of it as I am.

But it doesn't sound like you've ever really liked it?

bellac11 · 23/07/2023 17:30

I think wood fired pizzas are overrated, they're nearly always burnt on the bottom, cant stand that bitter flavour, I hate tough dough, hate floppy pizzas where the topping slides off, hate it when the dough all puffs up as the crust, hate thin bases

No matter where I have been, fancy posh places etc, I always think they're overrated.

I dont eat bread anymore so dont even eat them but roll my eyes any time people rave about them

Then you should have made your actual question clearer in the OP- rather being rude to posters who are making valid suggestions! 🙄

JuneOsborne · 23/07/2023 17:30

We like the sourdough pucks that come frozen. The bases aren't stodgy and they've enough substance to hold the toppings.

Have you ever tried a white sauce instead of tomato base? I prefer it.

Thank you!

The only other person I know who has one raved about it and how it's special family time every Saturday where they have pizza night.

we love our ooni. We make more than just pizzas in ours though!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/07/2023 17:31

If he just likes using the oven then set him the challenge of making different foods in it

But how does that help you? Will your crap pizza be less crap if you knew there were other people feeling obliged to join in with disappointing pizza against their will?

Ask for yours to be thinner or have something else, it's not hard.

Good tips, thank you! I like ham and mascarpone pizza so I will try that thank you!

See helpful poster re white sauce and sourdough bases in answer to your query.

Its just someone having a conversation on an internet forum, lighten up

gogomoto · 23/07/2023 17:32

I use half wholemeal flour, roll thinly and prefer red pesto to tomato sauce (with goat's cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan pepperdew peppers and rocket)

All pizza gives me heartburn though!

Malarandras · 23/07/2023 17:33

If the pizza is stodgy then the dough is wrong. All the pizza ovens in the world can’t fix that. The problem is your husband makes bad pizzas - not the pizza oven!

Oh god yes to the toppings slideing about on the watery based. Urgh.

We’ve got one of those big stone pizza oven things (the photo attached is the one we have), it’s so versatile and basically just an outside oven. We do pizza maybe once a month but use it a lot for other things, slow cooking meat, sourdough, fish, roasted veg etc.
im not sure how much you can fit in one of those ooni ones (height wise), can you cook other things in there?

YABU, food of the Gods!

But sounds like there could be some nice alternatives to use the Ooni for if you disagree. Wood fired steak sounds amazing

ooninooni · 23/07/2023 17:35

I like tandoori chicken and all the other ideas, thanks. I might try to recreate Nandos chicken in it.
