It's driving me insane. Such a twee word. When did the cosy obsession start?

OP posts:
leopard22 · 23/07/2023 16:11

Is cosy a twee word😂 first time I've heard that.

We've been at a kids football tournament all afternoon with the rain not taking a break once, everyone soaking and my 6yr old is know sat in his onesie, slippers on the settee, watching a film - he looks very cosy, how twee.. does he need a hot chocolate to take it to the next cosy level?

noglow · 23/07/2023 16:12

I hate the word twee

hattie43 · 23/07/2023 16:12

Cosy is a great comforting word in an ugly stressful world .

Lacucuracha · 23/07/2023 16:14

I don’t mind cosy at all but ‘snuggle up’ e.g. we snuggled up on the sofa does irrationally annoy me.

SpaceJamtart · 23/07/2023 16:16

I don't mind the word but I do get not wanting to be cosy in summer.

To me it does feel a bit cloying and suffocating like sitting in deep squashy sofa in a small warm room with loads of soft furnishings and heavy velvet curtains. Makes me feel all smothered and stuffy, I would much rather a cool and breezy space- comforable but airy, especially in summer.

Stickstickstickstickstick · 23/07/2023 16:16

When I moved in to my house the previous occupant had stuck COSY in big metal letters up on the wall. Honestly I think I’d have preferred live laugh love. It came straight the fuck down.

And yet I don’t hate the use of cosy itself.

PuddlesPityParty · 23/07/2023 16:16

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the word cosy on MN before 😳

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 23/07/2023 16:16

Not me! I hate being “cozy”. I love being out and about in the sunshine although that’s not gonna happen this weekend 😡.

AgentJohnson · 23/07/2023 16:16

There’s nowt wrong with cosy, gezellig (the sort of Dutch translation) on the other hand is grrrrrr. It’s overused to the point of rendering everything it’s used to describe, as meaningless, I rarely associate ‘gezellig’ with anything positive.

This made me proper chuckle 🤣

No, but it's July! High summer.

Cosy is just not a summer thing.

Again, though, still seems a weird thing to be annoyed about. Nobody’s forcing you to sit under a blanket. Why is it a problem if someone else wants to?

Also, where I am today it’s 15C and absolutely throwing it down, so I can see why an afternoon on the sofa with a book would feel like an appealing prospect.

I don’t think the concept of cosiness is seasonal, anyway. I mean, I’d say that (eg) being in a tent on a summer camping holiday when it’s gone dark and the temperature’s dropped is just as ‘cosy’ as being by the fire watching a film with a hot chocolate in winter.

electriclight · 23/07/2023 16:21

Now op has explained why she doesn't like it, I think it might just be that she has misunderstood the definition.

Cosy means comfort, warmth and relaxation. Nothing to do with hibernating or living a half life. And it's appropriate even in the summer if you return home after being caught in a downpour.

Cornchip · 23/07/2023 16:21

icelolly12 · 23/07/2023 16:08

It may be high summer but it's been pouring down all day, in fact all week and cold. Not exactly ice cream on the beach or picnic in the park weather regardless of the time of year.

Exactly. Where I like in the UK the weather is very autumnal (minus the orange leaves). It’s wet, grey but sort of mild.

It isn’t summery in the slightest.

So yes, I’d like to be “cosy” this weekend as the weather is fucking miserable. If we get any more sun I’ll be straight to the coast and there won’t be a blanket in sight.

Plus, a lot of us just aren’t really a fan of summer as a season. Where I live we get 2-3 weeks of “summer” a year (which has probably been and gone over May/June).

I’m not a summer person because we get so few weeks every year where it’s actually nice. I’d rather just get into the mood for autumn/winter than force myself to do “summery” things when the weather is fucking atrocious.

faerieland · 23/07/2023 16:21

I live for being cosy tbh. I only tolerate work so I can live my cosy life in my lovely flat. I wish someone would pay me to stay at home reading books - yes, with a hot chocolate! 😆

electriclight · 23/07/2023 16:23

And if you hate cosy - comfort, warmth, relaxation - I assume you enjoy discomfort, cold and stress. Which is more odd I think.

SallyWD · 23/07/2023 16:24

I have always been obsessed with cosiness, ever since I was a small child.

I'm not the one who's annoyed - it's not my thread. I was responding to someone saying it's natural to be thinking ahead to autumn at this time of year. I'm not even a summer person (hay fever, pale, heat intolerant) but I don't think it is natural. When the days get shorter, fine, but let's enjoy each time of year without wishing it away.

If the fecking rain would stop Grin

Rockbird · 23/07/2023 16:25

Cosy is safe and unthreatening. And it's even more appealing if, like me, you detest bright evenings and any temps over about 18°. You can keep the hot choc though, vile stuff.

Each to their own. I don't get the appeal of hot sun and bright light and Suncream. So I just don't dwell on it. I can think of nothing worse than lying on a beach all day. So I don't do it. I don't care what other people do though, crack on if it's your thing. Silly to get wound up by it.

MysweetAudrina · 23/07/2023 16:25

I'm a bit cosy now. Dinner in the oven and my 15 year old dd is napping in my bed beside me. I have my feet snuggled under her bum. The baby dog is the other side of me and the old dog is the other side of her. I have about 20 minutes to enjoy it so I am.

mondaytosunday · 23/07/2023 16:25

But who does it all day? The idea of being cosy is you spend your day running about and then come back to a 'cosy' home, not that you live under cover 24/7.

NoHallSouth · 23/07/2023 16:27

I like going out and then coming home all tired and ready to be be cosy. And comfy. And I like a cwtch.

RandomUsernameHere · 23/07/2023 16:27

That thread about looking forward to Autumn was weird! Although I'm a sun/heat/outdoor lover and absolutely hate the cold, dark and rain so I'm a bit biased.

Moonsun88 · 23/07/2023 16:28

Snuggles on the sofa with 'the famalanan. YANBU

Crikeyalmighty · 23/07/2023 16:29

I've never owned a blanket for sofa or an oodie - I do however like nice discreet lighting, good food, candles, and a warm house

No, but it's July! High summer.

Cosy is just not a summer thing.

Where do you live? It's been pissing it down here all week and it's only 14 degrees. Hardly summer weather.

I'm house-sitting this week and am feeling very cosy under a nice warm blanket with the dogs :)
