Or if we mess up the jet stream, arctic winters.

We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

And the facts and data show that CO2 emissions in the U.K. have been reduced faster here than by everyone else in the entire world except for two other smaller countries.

That is excellent news. It really is.

It is not to be taken in a vacuum though. How much do British consumers import from countries that score very badly?

I think there are metrics for consumption too but haven’t looked them up

I think a lot of that is on us personally though, to change our own habits

Daftasabroom · 23/07/2023 14:48

@Thebestwaytoscareatory I doubt there will be any significant implementation of H2 in the UK gas network. The current network can deal with up to 20% H2 mixed with natural gas. Beyond this almost the entire network and all gas boilers would need to be replaced. Even if the H2 is generated using 100% renewable energy a comparable heat pump is roughly 4x as efficient. H2 definitely has its place in the future fuels mix but not for domestic or commercial use where there is a suitable electric alternative.

https://ourworldindata.org/consumption-based-co2

It's not insignificant but perhaps not as much as may be expected. On the other hand the vast majority of emissions are from burning fossil fuels for power generation, transport, and heating. Only a portion of those emissions can be attributed to manufacturing of consumer goods.

How do CO2 emissions compare when we adjust for trade?

CO2 emissions are typically measured in terms of ‘production’. But how do emissions compare when we adjust for trade? Which countries export the most CO2 and which offshore their emissions?

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 23/07/2023 15:17

Oh, well someone better tell that to all five of Britain’s gas grid companies then seeing as they've published a hydrogen network plan and plan on spending something like £28bn on upgrading the gas network to be able to transport 100% hydrogen, as well as having Britain's first "hydrogen town" online by 2030.

energynetworks-newsroom.prgloo.com/newsroom/gas-grid-companies-plot-course-to-britains-first-hydrogen-town

Whether hydrogen or heat pumps prevail there will need to be absolutely massive investment. Boilers and equipment for hydrogen, insulation and building fabric/design for heat pumps. Either way the government's constant flip flopping and indecision makes planning difficult for everyone.

aurorauk · 23/07/2023 15:27

THE MEN is charge of Earth have messed up. Women have not as much. But yeah, we're heading for total calamity. Those who think we don't are either thick or deluded. Insulate, recycle and don't crank out any more than 2 kids I think but of course, many people will disagree and that's what's destroying earth further

Daftasabroom · 23/07/2023 15:55

@Thebestwaytoscareatory re the upgrading the domestic network for H2, I really doubt it will happen. Upgrading elements of the network for commercial transport markets may be worthwhile however. Hydrogen has such a low volumetric energy density at low or atmospheric pressure it's actually really difficult to transport and store the volume needed. Current hydrogen production happens very close to where it is used for just this reason.

Although the best one I've heard, you'll love this:

'it's all decided by the global elite, they choose the weather, and spray to produce it. The 'elites' are doing this to control people in the same way they did with covid, its all coming out that they do this'

I walked away. These people walk amongst us and can vote.

Some people on this thread aren't too far from this. Someone called it "critical thinking" upthread, how ironic is that .. 🤣 We're doomed though with these people, so crying at the same time...

Chatillon · 23/07/2023 22:46

Nope we’re doomed by people who can’t think for themselves. None of its funny either but you clearly aren’t the brightest.

Getting back to the matter in hand now - wildfires. No one is mentioning in the media that wildfires are actually a vicious circle in this. The fire gives off so much CO2 and destroys vegetation so adds to the problem and leads to more fires. With climate change this needs to be controlled.

The way that vegetation is managed and organised action/ rules to prevent fires is going to have a much bigger effect than heat pumps. Someone’s going to make a lot of money out of heat pumps and electric cars though…. But I’m sure that has nothing to do with it all.

I’m not the ‘denier’ here.

Agreed! The active management of forests across large naturally-prone areas of the globe has declined significantly over recent years (one might be forgiven for thinking that an agenda for 'wildfires' is, perversely, being actively pursued - makes for good press that supports the narrative). That said, there are those who dispute that there has actually been an increase in the frequency of such fires. However, even if forest fires are more commonplace, this should not be surprising, given increased levels of population, urbanisation and tourism - within a context of poor land management strategies. It is also the case that if natural fires are suppressed for a number of burn seasons, this (along with the reduced harvesting of timber etc) increases the fuel load - resulting in any subsequent wildfires spreading far more rapidly and with greater intensity than would otherwise have been the case.

The abuse is starting again! I had 2 years of it over the Covid bullhsit.. now it's starting for the Clyyymmmaaatttee bollocks! As if people haven't learned anything over the last 3 years! They lied about the whole covid thing... they lied about the vaccine... they lied about the masks... they lied about lockdowns... they are covering up excess deaths... and the people that called it out were right! But now they are playing us against each other with the whole cllyymmaate shit! I said from the start "Covid was the warm up for the clyyymmmaate shit to come". When I'm calling it out im getting abuse from idiots... probably the same ones that took 4 doses of the vaccine! But this is what they want.. they want us divided... they want us arguing with each other... brainless idiots!!

midgetastic · 24/07/2023 09:55

Yes some people lied that covid was a myth, that no one died and that the vaccine killed people and that just shows that we don't need to convince everyone to turn a shit show around

It's the same for climate change which is making things worse , bad events more commonplace , and will only get worse
We don't need everyone to understand or act

But we do need government with the nerve to start to tackle it

vera99 · 24/07/2023 10:04

The alarmist Daily Mail is the best ally at the moment for publicising in dramatic terms the chaos that is occurring and then also giving acres of free publicity to one of the groups raising the alarm, Just Stop Oil.

It really isn’t that easy. The government is just of one country in the world. They won’t be re elected if they don’t do what the majority of people want.

midgetastic · 24/07/2023 10:25

I did not say it's going to be easy

But each year we delay action the harder it will be for us personally

Which is why leadership is important

A heatwave would be lovely the weather is miserable now last July /August was wonderful and really improved many people's physical and mental health.

apart from the tens of thousands killed by it - it didn't do their mental health much good did it, or their loved ones

@Teateaandmoretea Wild fires account for the release up to 2GTCO2e but up to 80% is reabsorbed through regrowth so about 400MT. That's about 1% of all emissions. Heating in buildings is responsible for 10% of all global emissions.

It's wrong to claim that land management could have a bigger impact than sustainable heating solutions.

Wildandwonderful · 24/07/2023 12:05

This offers some more factual information on the causes of climate change and what we need to do to slow things down:

https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/science/causes-effects-climate-change

If you get to the bottom of the article it suggests that globally the wealthiest 1% of people are responsible for 50% of emissions.

According to Credit Suisse, individuals with more than $1 million (£780,000) in wealth (including property value and pensions) sit in the top 1 percent bracket. That includes a lot of people on MM who are flying off on regular holidays, using oil central heating, tumble driers and driving new 4x4s. These people are the biggest consumers in every way and the rest of us in the western world are not far behind them. Stop blaming the populations of the less developed world or thinking you don't have an impact.

somehow i find that the people who readily accuse others of being not so bright arent so bright themselves. ime, it is high iq people who are humble, and can accept that they can be wrong or not experts. You arent giving those vibes if you are implying that climate change is not real, and it was invented to sell us products like EV. And especially if you think you are the most brilliant, critical thinking person to have realised this (wow, congratulations)! i'll let people who have read the entirety of your previous posts to be the judge of your iq.

on the other hand, EV does have en environmental impact as well of course, and so do heat pumps. When there is a problem, multiple people across the world offer multiple solutions. Some of these solutions are costly, yes. Some have other indirect environmental costs so create other problems, yes. None of these are singular answers to the whole problem either. Some of these will prevail, some will not. As much as many, including you, would like to believe, there is no secret grand conspiracy unit that have sat down, invented climate change to sell us EV.

Greece gets wildfires every year. The fire in Rhodes is arson. The fire in Corfu is a rubbish tip that has been allowed to smoulder. If you did some proper digging and speak to people who actually live in these areas, then you would know
