Or if we mess up the jet stream, arctic winters.

We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

Oh and that includes land which is built on or unsuitable for growing crops/veg - so the reality will be much less than that.

What do you propose? The logical one would be to wipe out a huge percentage of the population but that’s not going to happen.

babbscrabbs · 18/07/2023 12:38

Sureaseggs44 · 18/07/2023 12:29

Over 1000 scientists have said there is not a crisis .

look here is my proposal . We have a university in this country purely to study the FACTS about green energy and climate changes and whether electric cars are actually as clean overall when you look at the battery life and disposal etc etc this would be a free course and attract the best minds from all over the world . Because there is no point in drinking things like almond milk etc if you are actually destroying what you think you are saving . And the media should stop saying highest temperature EVER . Because it’s highest temperature since recording temperature changes ( since about 1880) Other graphs are produced using different methods that you either believe or you don’t .

Almost none of those 1000 scientists were experts in climate change.

The group behind it work for or have links to the fossil fuel industry.

99% of ACTUAL, peer reviewed climate research by experts disagree. That's as close as you'll get to FACTS.

Why would you believe the 1000 non experts who are at least in part oil lobbyists on anything to do with the climate?

Same reason you think almond milk is the problem, rather than the fossil fuel industry, perhaps.

A person with a mainly vegetarian diet requires 2 acres of land to feed themselves for a year.

We have a population of 67.7 million.

The U.K. is 60 million acres.

You do the maths!

It means that even if everyone became vegetarian, we're still fucked.

But not as badly as if people had a typical meat based diet, which requires about 13 acres per person - animals and the feed they consume take up a lot of space

midgetastic · 18/07/2023 12:39

It is not too late

You don't need everyone to act instantly

China will change if it can't sell stuff

VinoVeritas1 · 18/07/2023 12:39

@babbscrabbs

Perhaps. But do you want to slow it down and give at least our children a chance? Reduce suffering and starvation?

Yes of course. This is all we can do. Live as responsibly as we can and do what we can with the remaining time given to us. However when people get a bit "oh we've fucked everything up and I'm panicking" it does help to remember that the Earth cycles are far far bigger and more powerful than we are, and that we are just passing through. Regardless of what we do or don't do we are guests here. Fact

We don’t need loads of more people, but the birth rate needs to be kept steady and not just drop suddenly which is what is currently happening. If the majority of families only have 2 children, that is a sudden drop and will cause huge huge issues once the current workforce can no longer work!

We could maintain a steady population by allowing more immigration.

VinoVeritas1 · 18/07/2023 12:40

But yes Babbs, we can slow it down.

I don’t propose anything I think we can slow all this perhaps but not stop it. Sometimes there isn’t an answer and sadly I think this is one of those situations. I’ll do everything I can to slow it down however, buy us more time.

... but people wont, who exactly is going to stop their one holiday flight a year whilst they see the wealthier jetting around the world at a constant rate?

Me! I haven't flown since 2012.

Me too. Have flown twice since 2012. Once for a previously planned holiday and once for a funeral. I’m not going to say it doesn’t hurt. I feel really sad sometimes thinking about the places I’d like to go to. But then I remember the people in Pakistan who lost everything in the floods last year, the city that has run out of water and are having to drink water with too high levels of brackish water in it, the wildfires, the crop failures we have already had. I think about my DC and their future. Is my desire to go and see Africa more important than food and water security, our safety, our lives? Well no. That’s a no brainer.

PurpleWisteria1 · 18/07/2023 12:43

LakieLady · 18/07/2023 12:37

I'd like to see a requirement to show the country of origin for goods on websites, and show it prominently, too. I try and avoid stuff made in China, but I ordered some earplugs a few weeks ago and was hacked off when they arrived and they were from China.

If it was obvious, it would be easier to avoid stuff that's been shipped halfway round the world. When you shop in person, you can at least look at the labels.

True. My FIL said last week that he had found a shopping site that was brilliant! 5 new T-shirts for only £20 which included shipping.
when I asked where that was he said Temu. I said oh right not heard of that- is that coming from China? He said no, came within a week- absolutely brilliant.
It’s just indicative of the whole thing. Makes me so sad.

I think there are ways, we’re just too lazy as humans to actually put more in place. We can walk more (this would also benefit an increasingly overweight society too), eat less meat, grow our own veg, those are a few things of the top of my head that we can do each as a family.

LakieLady · 18/07/2023 12:44

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/07/2023 12:01

@LakieLady

you can get damp and mould in your house doing it like that

I've been doing it for years, and not a hint of damp or mould.

I keep the trickle vents open though, even on cold days. I find I get a headache if I don't.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 18/07/2023 12:45

I drive a small petrol car, 45 minutes to work. Getting the train door to door would involve a half hour walk each way followed by a 1.5 hour train journey.
I only eat a small amount of meat and would happily go vegetarian, but the quality of our fruit and veg in the UK is pretty poor compared to other Mediterranean countries.

I think it's all well and good expecting people to walk miles and drastically change their diet, but until bigger things out of our control improve such as better public transport, cheaper electric vehicles and good quality food, it's difficult.

And whilst it would be lovely to live in Central London and get the tube, buy a 20K electric car or shop in farmers markets for fresh produce. I just can't afford it

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/07/2023 12:45

We don’t need a growth in population. Many jobs will be taken over AI and we currently have millions who are economically inactive or only working part time.

We need to stop building and stop trying to concrete over every square inch of green.

smilesup · 18/07/2023 12:46

CompletekyConfused · 18/07/2023 08:23

The sad truth is we as individuals can't make any difference by not using cars or changing our diets. It's fine beyond that. Even if millions in the UK changed their habits it wouldn't have an impact. We need global territories (China) and industries to make huge changes - going vegan won't make a joy of difference even if we all do it.

This is such a cop out. We do have power to influence the organisations and corporations that have to just be more organised and do it collectively. Let organisations know why you're not buying their stuff that is badly packaged etc. Please organisations and companies are made up by individuals so they're more individuals that actively change their life and incorporate that into their workplace well eventually have some impact we buy so much stuff as a country from China. They more ethically we spend our money, the larger the ethical market will grow. It will be too little too late but just throwing your hands up and saying oh well fuck it I'm going to do nothing is selling out the next generation.

They were in the North too. The main road outside my house still has 'waves' in the tarmac from where it solidified afterwards.

We swapped our car for a Tesla so doing our bit there

@User538765

your Tesla, brand new on your driveway, has already done more environmental damage than 20 years of running my Ford Focus.

what are you planning on doing with your batteries when they die?

it's not exactly FUELLED by recycled waste is it?

VinoVeritas1 · 18/07/2023 12:49

@FuckYouEzekiel

It was make one hell of a difference to those animals stood in a kill line though.

On the moral ground, I agree with you as I'm vegetarian myself. But the reality in terms of land required to sustain large numbers of human vegetarians means that as a purely environmental principle it is untenable. The real issue is of course, over-population. We have far outstripped our natural capacity to live sustainably on this planet - there are just too many of us. I don't have an answer for that but it is a fundamental truth of our current condition. Less humans = less pollution, more ability to live sustainably within finite land resources and subsequently less reliance on dangerous environmental practices

I recycle everything

Sticking plaster and not a very good one.

When Rishi Sunak was on TV debates this time last year, he was asked "what things can citizens of this country do to help tackle climate change". He instantly assumed a sickly sweet expression and said that he had asked his daughters this very question, because children are the future after all, so who better to ask than them?

His first answer was "recycle".

As if "recycling" will tackle the climate emergency 😡

And I would rather listen to climate scientists - you know, people who have studied and looked at the evidence for years - that a would be prime minister's children. A bloke who has proven he thinks environmental issues are a tiresome irrelevance.

Oh dear god. I remember that. Next he said about switching lights off and then something about waiting for technological advances. Absolutely no understanding whatsoever. So concerning. So guys, if we just put things in the right bin, turn lights off when not in use and keep all our toes and fingers crossed, I’m sure we will be fine. He doesn’t have a clue.

malificent7 · 18/07/2023 12:51

It's a mess of our own making. People used to look at me like I had 3 heads when I said I didn't drive because of climate change. I learned in the end aged 35 for work.
People don't want to change hence the " it won't make any difference if I stop shopping/ driving/ flying/ eating meT bollocks."

malificent7 · 18/07/2023 12:52

Meat*

Ofeelya · 18/07/2023 12:52

We don't drive, are all vegetarian, wash two loads a week on 30° and don't use a tumble dryer, don't fly/go on holiday, only put heating on on the coldest days for a hour or two, don't buy tat from Shein/Temu or wherever, recycle everything possible, use as little plastic as possible... Not sure what else we can do as a family. And it all seems a bit futile anyway at this point, if I'm honest.
