We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

It’s already decreased? How do you not know this? The amount of babies born in the last 20 years is too few! And it’s getting worse. Unless the majority of us have 3 babies it’s just not enough (unless you take away medical care for the elderly 70+ of course) It’s you and your friends / siblings who will feel the impact and then to a far greater degree your children. This will go alongside climate change, not instead of it.

You appear to have missed the words "slow and sustainable" in my rather short post.

We need to manage our population decline, because it does need to reduce. However the population falling off a cliff edge will be just as disastrous as continuing to allow it to grow.

Again, we need a slow and sustainable long-term decrease.

I am staying hopeful that science will get us out of this pickle. We can not rely on human will to change things, as it is not in 'our' nature.

Having spent a lot of time in the far east, me turning my heating down 1 degree is futile. They consume and dispose in obscene levels.

I do have faith in science though, Fusion energy is looking feasible over the next few decades, with one due to be online by 2035. This in theory could supply all the worlds energy needs, with zero negative output.

https://www.iter.org/

I am certain the science is there.

There just needs to be the will. Trouble is that so many of the super rich and political leaders have got where they are because they are sociopaths.

We shouldn't be giving excessive medical care to 70+ age people, I'm nearing that age and don't want or expect medical interventions to keep me alive

@Divinericepudding

im not saying that global warming doesn’t exist
just that our weather in the uk this year hasn’t been anything out of the ordinary
even last year it wasn’t really
as I say in the summer we are supposed to get some hot and dry weather

You don’t think last year ‘was out of the ordinary’? I mean, it Literally Was ‘Out Of The Ordinary’.
Sheesh.

Ah. The Rishi Sunak keep your fingers crossed that science will save us approach. Meanwhile ignore the advice from experts about what we know could actually help. Good plan!

Absolutely agree.

The world cannot continue with a population explosion just to deal with care and pensions.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 18/07/2023 11:02

Unfortuantely it requires radical change in the entire global system of consumerism. And when so many ordinary people are being so badly stretched, they're not going to vote for what is required. The most effective way is to stop buying so much stuff - and especially stuff made in the far East and shipped across the world. Well, good luck trying to buy anything that isn't made (in full or part) in China and the like. And the wealthy aren't going to do what they could to help (such as stop using private jets, for example). I simply cannot see enough people collectively taking the necessary action to make any difference. I'm left hoping for some kind of scientific miracle.

RoyalGala · 18/07/2023 11:03

We only have ourselves to blame. We’ve polluted and plundered a lot of the earths resources, now it’s payback for Mother Nature until we change our ways but I fear it’s already too late.

Wrong about raising cattle being carbon light because of the grass they graze on capturing carbon.

Yeah, that wasn’t me that said it - I was questioning it as the pp seemed to be ignoring the issue, amongst other things, of methane

I shouldn't worry from what I saw regarding the care given to my parents that won't be an issue. My dad had cancer when he was 69, needed a stem cell transplant which meant he was waiting for a special infection control barrier room to become available for a 6 week period. Waited months. Turned 70 while waiting, so was then told he was too old and died a while later.

Some people on mumsnet must be SO disappointed that we haven't got this massive heatwave in the UK that they've got in Europe - and elsewhere over the world... Nothing to complain about at the moment have they ??? Sad Oh maybe the rain - let's complain about the rain a bit ... even though there's hardly been any really.

Have we had a 'have you got your heating on' thread this week? NO? You're slipping folks... 😆

Especially when we could if we wanted/needed increase immigration into this country, allow those immigrants to work and become useful, productive residents of this country/other western countries. Especially when they may need to flee their countries due to climate change.

I don't mean to criticise and I'm not attacking you, but I see this all the time on social media and it makes me mad. This fatalistic, self flagellating "We're fucked and we only have ourselves to blame" etc etc. It's like throwing in the towel.

No I don't blame myself! I am doing what I can. I blame governments and big business who have done fuck all to address the issue, despite being party to information that most people know very little about. They have actively chosen to do nothing about it. I blame them.

LaPerduta · 18/07/2023 11:08

Againstmachine · 18/07/2023 08:20

It's too late, but let's face it you have mumsnetters who can't use a towel more than once, having heating on at 25 degrees in winter, and drive their range rovers 1/4 mile to the shops.

Agreed. This sort of thing makes me really angry as it's so unnecessary and self-indulgent, plus people like that tend to be smug about it too, as they consider themselves super house-proud.

I'm not perfect - I fly and eat meat - but I don't have a car, don't have kids, use heating minimally, no air-con, hardly ever use tumble dryer.

I remember going to stay in a friend's parents' holiday house and they had the heating on high, even though they hadn't been there for weeks, just so they didn't have to put up with it being cold for half an hour when they first got there. So selfish.

Katey83 · 18/07/2023 11:08

The world as we know it and human life may well end in our children’s lifetime. It’s sad no one with any power wants to address that and try and stave off the worst. However - there was never a point in human history when we didn’t think the world was ending soon. That we’re likely right now is sad, but we aren’t living with an unheard of existential threat; fear of annihilation is a bedrock of human life.

StellaJohanna · 18/07/2023 11:08

I really don't think it helps when the liberal elite are telling a family of four that their two weeks in Spain is destroying the world. As they jet off to their 10000sq m mansion in LA.

It has been made a class war, by the hypocritical elite telling us what we shoudl be doing.

Indeed you also have idiots elite like Lewis Hamilton who bangs on about climate change whilst doing his massively polluting job, and jetting about to events like new York fashion week the day after a race.

I am not sure why the sarcasm? I posted a link to an actual joint country science project, that is currently being brought up to temperature, and will be producing energy in a decade.

This style of energy has one by product, inert gas Helium. So no carbion dioxide, or other harmful and hard to manage by products.

You can cary on 'not ignoring the advice' and I will stick with the science thank you.

So yes, I would say that is a good plan. Not sure why politics was brought into it.

I'm sorry but I couldn't have a meat free day my dad's a butcher I've grown up on it 🤣 had the best home cooked meals. I got fed very well.

Weird argument. My Dad was a milkman - I still manage to not drink milk 🤷‍♀️

This made me laugh. My dads makes jelly so I have to eat it every day.

Glad I amused you. But it's the way I was brought up. I love my meat and my mam included it in every meal. Nothing wrong with that 🤷‍♀️

The whole push from organisations to get people back into offices is a strange one. Most of the time just for presenteeism. Public transport in much areas of this country is non-existant, or poor and expensive. Meaning people are driving, simply to sit in an office and do the same job as they can do from home, and no wasteful emissions.

I so agree with this. I don't understand why they are doing it, when office space is so expensive to rent and to run. There's not even a business case for it most of the time.

My employer isn't insisting on people going back. Some teams go in more than others, where they found that they missed out on a lot of informal info sharing when working wholly from home, and people whose home environment isn't conducive to working from home effectively are going in more, but there's been no pressure.

My team will never go back to office working. We can manage double the caseload we had pre-pandemic, because we're not driving all over the place to see clients but doing stuff by phone wherever possible, and not subject to the endless distractions of other people's chatter. My car use has been reduced by more than 50%.

I think that all those companies, pension funds and influential individuals who have a financial interest in people using offices are behind the drive to get people back into offices. Converting those buildings into desperately needed housing wouldn't be anywhere near as lucrative.

Well there is something wrong with that actually.

But I get the feeling you will get angry and defensive when that's pointed out.
